Without C.C, who will now challenge the Cubs in the Central

Now that  C.C. has A-GREED! to wear the Yankee pinstrips over the lager-strips of Milwaukee, are the Brewers just another average team in the Central?

Star-divide

Adam McCalvy of MLB.com wrote:

GM Melvin confirmed that the Brewers made a five-year offer to Sabathia for about $100 million, and said he had "considered" adding a sixth year to the offer. The Brewers never formally made that offer, but on Tuesday were trying to set up another meeting with Sabathia's representatives.

""We were happy for CC because that's a pretty good deal, and the Yankees got themselves a pretty good pitcher. We had a good time with CC during the summer. He brought a lot of fun to our organization and our city, and that's the way we feel about it."

Well Cubs fans feel even better.  Without C.C. and possibly with out Sheets as well, it will be tough for the Brew Crew to make the playoffs.  I know winning the Series is the ultimate goal, but we gotta win the divison first.

So with saying that, who do you think will make a serious run at the Cubs for the Central Crown? Or will the Cubs just run away with it?

Don't count out the Brewers

It’s December 10. They have tradeable pieces yet, and could go out and get cheaper pitching help.

The Cubs are likely to have the best rotation in the division, if not the league, but the Brewers could easily have a better lineup.

Cliches become cliches because they are true — still have to play the games.

Presuming Sheets leaves...

… and I think he will, the Crew could trade Prince Fielder to the AL for pitching help, and put Braun at 1B and Mat Ganel in LF (or vice versa).

If I am not mistaken. The Brewers were rumored

The Brewers were rumored to be interested in trading Fielder for Matt Cain. That would benefit both sides greatly.

The problem with trading Prince

is he is their only left handed power source.

The Brew crew have the same issue as the Cubs, they are right handed dominant.

A lack of left handed hitting and their lack of walks are the two biggest issues with the Brewers offense.

Hey, it's a new century!

Ummmm..... no

Cubs 3rd in OPS, 4th in SLG, 4th in R
Brewers 24th in OPS, 14th in SLG, 19th in R

It’s going to be HARD not easy for the Brewers to match the Cubs lineup.

Add on the loss of C.C. Sabathia and likely the loss of Ben Sheets too and the Brewers will be lucky to be .500.

Everyone is fixated on how we had to fight back the Brewers in 2007 and Braun had an OPS of over .1000, Fielder had 51 HRs, Hardy was on fire, Hart looked really promising, etc. That team is done and done. They were playing way over their heads. They strike out too much and walk too little.

No actually they are getting worse

They could improve but their numbers were down across the board Fielder, Braun, Hart, or stayed about the the same, Weeks, Hardy.

Again you could argue they are ‘due’ for a rebound like what they did in 2007 but Fielder is going to rebound to over 50 HRs, Braun is going to go back to raking up an OPS of 1.400 against lefties, and Hart is going to go back to his ‘best’ BB:K ratio of 2:5. Yeah, I’m not too worried.

As one of the Cardinals fans that likes to come over here and see what you're discussing.....

If CC does in fact sign with the Yanks, I see this division next year, whether Peavy is a Cub or not, as the Cubs division to lose.

Does anyone have a chance to match the Cubs? Sure, but I think it would take a team overachieving along with the Cubs underachieving in order for the other team to stay in it. Who has the best chance of that?

I agree that if anyone’s going to do it, the Cards are the most likely, but I see the Cards as probably an 84-87 win team, so if they pull that off, the Cubs should still handily take the Central in 2009.

Much left to do in the off season but

Milwaukee should sell the “Big Guy” to the loser of the Tex sweepstakes and do what Oakland and Minnesota.

They might need a lefty and could sign Ibanez or trade spare parts to Minn, KC, or FL for their lefty.

If the Cubs indeed land Peavy for what is the rumored deal of Peavy-DeRosa-Marquis-Hart-Vitters-Happ- they Cubs with the rotation will be the favorite not only in the NLC but the NL period, which means nothing.

Milwaukee is still a solid team.

While this year’s rotation is definitely going to be worse, it will still be formidable. Seeing how the Brewers had enough money to offer CC 20 million annually over five years, I fully expect them to go out and get a solid starter, maybe Randy Johnson. That signing, plus the return of Yovani Gallardo, makes their rotation a very pretty good one. I may be alone with this, but I fully expect Gallardo to emerge as a frontline starter next year, giving them Ben-Sheets like production. Their offense is the same and should probably improve a bit with a full year from Mike Cameron and further development by their young players, and potentially a rebound year from Rickie Weeks. If they can bolster their bullpen and get a solid closer they should be right in the thick of things come next September.

Which year is Weeks going to 'rebound' from?

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/7213/career;_ylt=AuQOhaQVALkhrqmgWCsf19KFCLcF

Weeks played 129 games this year and that’s a career high. He barely was over .800 OPS last year and he’s hit about .235 over his last 900 at-bats. I’d say that’s a pretty good sample size. His defense is terrible to boot. There’s no suggestion that he will ever rebound, and again to what? 2007 September? Anyone can have a flash in the pan like that.

Oh and as for using that $$$$, that was only for Sabathia. http://danny-knobler.blogs.sportsline.com/mcc/blogs/entry/8590096/12211670?source=rss_blogs_MLB The owners told Melvin he can’t use ANY of the money from the Sabathia deal. It was only there for a real superstar.

I actually agree with the owners

And not just because I’m a Cubs fan.

Sabathia became a folk hero in Milwauke for the way he lead the Brewers down the stretch. There is already love for him in Milwaukee. Plus, the other options out there are flawed. Burnett (injury problems), Lowe (age). They got burned in the Suppan deal (He’s set to make $12.5 in ‘09 and $12.5M again in ’10!) and they really can’t afford to dish out huge money to another starter who may give mixed results.

Let's see how spring training goes.

First, we need to make sure our house is in order. I’m more concerned about sorting out middle infield and outfield duties than who’s going to be breathing down our neck in September.

Having said that, I’m not worried about the Pirates. The Cards are always a concern, if only because of LaRussa’s managerial prowess. I don’t see the Reds or Astros making a serious run right now, and the Brewers… I want to see them play in spring training before I make up my mind. They could be competitive, or they could melt down by May.

The Reds intrigue me,

I’m not sure if the Reds are ready to contend in 2009 but sometime in the next couple of years, I think they will make the playoffs.

I guess we have different definitions of winning.

I consider any season that the team gets to the playoffs a “winning” season. This is because only 1 team can win the whole tournament.

Also, the 2003 NLDS was the only playoff series that the Cubs have won since (1908, I think?) Not that Dusty was exactly responsible as Woody was the person most responsible for winning.

I think the Reds have too many holes.

They have a good infield, with Votto, Encarnacion and Phillips, but I don’t like their shortstop and catcher. Meanwhile, they have the supremely talented Jay Bruce in the outfield, but Chris Dickerson and Norris Hopper don’t do much for me. Dickerson might turn into something down the road, but he probably won’t. Whatever it’s worth, Bill James really likes Dickerson.
The Reds also have a solid rotation, and the may have found their front of the rotation guy in Edinson Volquez, but the ret of their pitchers look like number four type guys. Though, a big rebound for Aaron Harang could change that.
I think Cinci is at least a year away from contending.

The Astros played way over their heads.

Their Pythagorean record was 77-84. Teams that do this tend to seriously regress the following year.

Remember the 2007 Diamondbacks? The team that won 90 games with a negative run differential? Guess what happened to them in 2008? They won eight fewer games.

I expect the Astros to finish with 77-78 wins in 2009 — unless they significantly change their team, i.e. upgrade their pitching staff.

I know that...

Look at all the other teams [in the division]. They are far and away less complete than the Cubs.

The Cubs are (and unless another division team makes huge strides) and will be the prohibitive favorites in 2009. Going into 2004, they may have been favored but were not prohibitive favorites. The birds and ’stros were still right there.

The one team that could have challenged the Cubs in 2009 already lost their big pitching guy (and so too the sure-fire SS they gave up for him), they down graded in CF just yesterday, they’re about to lose another very good SP, their ‘pen is in shambles, their bench is thin and their defence is marginal. They can’t possibly improve enough of those areas on their budget to compete with the Cubs. It’s a huge stretch of the imagination they could even finish within 5-6 games of the Cubs. The Cubs would have to have serious injuries to fall back to the rest of the division.

Brewers

If Mark Antanasio was serious about keeping Sabathia I don’t understand why they’re not out there offering 4-5 year deals to both Lowe and Burnett. If they do not add one ace-type of pitcher and/or a #2-3 pitcher, this is simply a bad rotation.

My biggest concern is the Reds. I think its a solid team with a really nice rotation with Arroyo, Harang, Cueto and Volquez.

Harang

Harang pitched 4 IP in a relief role when the Reds played some game to 14 innings or so.

After that Harang was not the same. He ended up on the DL eventually. Once he came back, he was on fire. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/players/6936/gamelog;ylt=ArHM9A.m61.rEKZZ1rMpUSFCLcF Check out from August 16th to the end of the season. Take out that one blip against St. Louis to end the season and his ERA would have been around 2.00. Yeah, add in Volquez, Cueto, Arroyo (innings eater at least) and that’s a solid core to start with. We’ll see if Dusty knows how to use it. Based on what happened to Harang last year, my guess is NO but the 2003 Cubs example prevails.

I'm gonna go out on a limb and say that the Brewers are the 4th best team in the division....

Ageeing with dml, the Reds can’t be overlooked.

Sure, we said the same thing last year but they have some excellent young players, especially pitchers. Harang, Cueto, Volquez (obviously), and Arroyo (a little more of a stretch) can be pretty dominant pitchers able to reach 15 wins.

They’ve got Votto, Bruce and other players could make some surprises.

Trying to set aside my Cubs bias, I say that the Cubs have the best rotation and lineup in the division, still.

I feel like the Brewers are going to take some steps back these next couple years. They’ve been thinking about trading Hart and Prince.

They’ll be back, though.

C.C. won me over...

this year. I really respect his abilities and hope I get to see him at his peak in the next few years. I dislike the Yankees and don’t wish them well, but I really like C.C. Glad to see him in the AL.

Do you think CC will embrace the NY media?

Or the NY media embrace C.C?

Brown, Mussina, Pavano, Johnson

They like to pay for non play……CC has a lot of innings. He could break like any pitcher

Hughes and Joba look like they could be really good

Especially in Joba’s case. Anyone who throws 98 has a chance in the MLB (see Kyle Farnsworth, who just signed with the Royals)

And just because someone "has a chance"...

…doesn’t mean they’re “good.” (See Farnsworth, Kyle, who just signed with the Royals.)

Yes, yes ... winter is indeed a pond upon which all of us must skate, braving frostbite and runny noses in the hopes that our cars will start and we shan't embarass ourselves slipping on a patch of black ice. Spring is more a quagmire of cold mud and slush, and fall is a pile of fallen leaves that may or may not hide a pile of doggy doo-doo. But summer, ah summer is an oasis of endless green that disappears all too quickly beneath our feet as we rush through its warm, glorious bliss.

Pujols is, and always will be, the biggest threat to the Cubs.

It’s absolutely amazing how in this sport, one player can single-handedly make a team a contender, regardless of the supporting cast around him.

I'm not going to even bother trying to update this sig everyday anymore... that's what the standings column on ESPN is for.

the cardinals are always a threat and the reds can be scary when they,re on.the astros always seem to have a miracle run in them every year until they peter out.dont ever count on the cubs being automatic.as we all know they always find a way to dissapoint.
