Red Sox Unveil New Road Uniforms
For some reason, the Red Sox have decided to go "retro" with their road uniforms:
via f3.yahoofs.com
They're OK, I guess, but as pointed out here:Why would the team want to turn in the jerseys it wore while clinching two world championships to bring back one similar to the one worn to choke away the 1986 World Series? Beats me, chief.
Good point. Further, I agree with Joy of Sox, which says of the new "alternate" cap, shown above:
All of these minor changes seem fine -- I like the 1980s road grays a lot -- except for the alternative caps. I don't mind the club selling caps with the two socks on it -- in fact, I could see myself wearing one -- but the players should wear nothing but the B.The Cubs should take a lesson from this. I have never liked the Cubs' road cap -- the one with the red bill. The Cubs should stick with the all-blue cap, home and road.

I agree about the road cap. The Cubs road cap with the red bill is lame.
Keep it all blue.

I completely agree...
the two things I dislike about the cubs uniforms are the red bill on the road cap and the crawling bear on the blue jerseys. I think the our alternate blue jerseys should have the circle with cubs written in it like the home jersey (just like during Ryno’s days).

Its all a way of making money
Red Sox fans will now feel as though they need to buy this new hat. Either die-hards who want all Red Sox merchandise or passive fans who like the two socks and think they will be different with the new logo.

actually the Pawtucket farm team has always
used the hanging socks and it has been a big seller, so it was logical for the major league BoSox to finally incorporate this logo into their arsenal. I think it is a marketing blunder that it took this long.

So you're saying the team should use the Triple-A logo as their logo?
I think the Red Sox have always used the hanging sox as part of their marketing — but never as part of their uniform.

Sorry Al, I was not clear.
Pawtucket uses the hanging socks as their logo on their cap and it has been very popular with the BoSox fans that I know (I went to school in Boston for two years, so I know a number of people from the area).
Sorry for the confusion, I was commenting on the new Red Sox cap that had the hanging socks on it.

No, I know exactly what you're saying.
I know the PawSox use that logo on their cap. But IMO, the parent club should use nothing but a “B”.

Cubs Uni's
i’m not a big fan of the red bills, either. This year, when the Cubs wore the stars and stripes hats in St. Louis, I thought the blue hats looked great with the road greys.
Like a lot of you, I’m not a fan of the blue jerseys — especially at home. They look like softball jerseys. The blue pinstripes are a classic look, as are the road greys.

ditto the red bills
I’ve never liked them.
Count me as someone who likes the blue jerseys. I really liked it a few years back when the Cubs had the darker (more navy) warm-up jerseys and caps. I thought those looked great and I’d like to see the Cubs go with an alternative jersey like that one.

I like them
I wish the Cubs would do some sort of retro third jersey

Cool unis...
…but just more $ that their bandwagon jumper fans will have to buy. I used to actually like the Red Sox until they won the world series- since, I simply cannot believe the amount of red sox hats I see on 20 somethings in suburban Chicago. I know they have many long time, died in the wool fans, but they sure have become flavor of the month.
I have developed a real disdain for the Red sox resultingly over the last few years.

It seems like every other
cap you see in SD is a Red Sox hat. Never saw that until a series win. (Interestingly enough, a White Sox WS didn’t start such a clamor for their headgear….)

Cubs unis
I don’t like the blue jerseys at home. They should wear the white with blue pinstripes exclusively at home. I like the blue jerseys on the road. All gray is just so depressing to me. I do think with the blue jerseys, the logo should be what they have at home and what they had on the road back in the mid 80s. And get rid of the red bill on the caps!

You mean the sleeve patch
from the 80s as the main logo on the alternate jersey? I would like to see this with the 60s – 70s patch.

I have wished for years that the Cubs would
come up with a new uniform (for home or away, I don’t care). I’d like something that incorporates the very popular logo from 1914. I’d like anything that breaks up the Karma of the last few years. New look—new attitude.
I am willing to try ANYTHING!!

"Few" years?
The uniforms have nothing to do with failures since……..oh, let’s go back to 1969.
A team that keeps changing their uniforms for no apparent reason becomes the Padres, Rays, the Brewers, the Astros….etc, etc. Their unifoprms mean nothing.
The Yankees have only two uniforms. The Dodgers have only two uniforms. The Red Sox retro road perfectly accentuates their traditional home uniform. That stupid red top they wore, both at home and the road was awful.

Like 1982 Uniforms Better
Those light blue Braves road uniforms said Atlanta across the front. The pedestrian looking home uniforms that said Braves in cursive in blue with red trim and no tomahawk looks better than that monstrosity.
I like the fact that the Mississippi Braves use a logo with the “M” and tomahawk that looks just like the old Milwaukee Braves logo.

I’m digging the different uniforms. Whether it be the old school. Or the Cubs “softball” jersey. Its a fun change of pace even if the change is one from years ago.

the uniform is what we all cheer for in reality. The players change almost daily, but it’s always the uniform that stays the same, and should stay the same

road grays because you think they look good or just because of tradition?
or both?
White w/ pinstripes is a classic look, no argument there. But the gray is just… well, gray. Very meh. I wouldn’t mind seeing them do a little something with the road look.

Bring back....
the 69 jerseys…seriously the Cubs have changed jerseys so many times over their history, why should the current ones remain for the rest of time? Dont get me wrong i love the current jerseys and i love that theyre simple but they should eventually change. Theyre arent even classic, only since the 80s.
by northpaw22k on Dec 13, 2008 7:51 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
No, the Cubs really haven't changed jerseys.
Road jerseys, yes. But the home pinstripe jersey has been basically unchanged since 1957.

my point about the Cubs uniforms
is that the 1914 cap seems to be very popular, so why not bring that back as either a home or away alternate uniform. I don’t want any of these red gimmick jerseys, that Al mentioned. I just want something different. I don’t think there is any “magic” to the Cub jerseys that have been used since WWII.
Saying the Cubs have to stay with what they have done since before the 1980s makes no sense to me. That is like saying Wrigley should not have lights or added the 2000+ seats that they have squeezed into the stadium through remodeling over the last three decades. A bit of change can be a good thing.
The Cubs were the most dominant team in baseball prior to WWII, why shouldn’t they go back to one of the logos from that era? I would have no problem with a little Karma from the past.

Thanks for posting the 1909 uniform. Of course, you know 95% of the players will wear their pants below their ankles.

Maybe, maybe not.
There are quite a few players these days who like the high-sock look. Reed Johnson, Alfonso Soriano and Ryan Dempster are among the Cubs who generally wear their pants that way.
IF the Cubs were to change, this would be the look I’d like. They could even do it in blue pinstripes instead of B&W, to have some connection to today. I particularly like the vertical “Chicago” on the road jersey.

with the financial hole that Zell is in
I am sure that he would like to have that vertical patch read “1-800-588-2300” or whoever would want to advertise there. Let’s just be grateful that baseball hasn’t stooped to anything that low.
…yet! :-)

Northpaw's basic point is true.
It’s fine to hold onto a uniform that’s part of a successful tradition. The Cubs’ royal blue and home pinstripes don’t signify a winning tradition. I’d go back to navy and one of the previous logos.
