Minaya spending money like a drunken sailor?
I get the whole shore up the bullpen problem. Everyone in America expected this.
But I'm sure Omar made a make-or-break, calculated mistake when he inked Putz. No doubt they'll have the best pen to contend with (leading into Spring), but this has all of the earmarks of a catastrophic failure.
Delgado runs on hobbled legs, and Reyes might be one of the laziest dudes with the most talent in the NL. And then there's the issue of starting pitching.
I see Minaya "chasing" the Pillies, nothing else, in an effort to secure another year of 2nd place in the NL East. I really think the guy has been afforded at least 2 years too many, and he will be gone by Sept/Oct.
Where are the Mets young bats and SP's? Isn't that what a GM is paid for?

how so?
putz is 4.5m, k-rod is 12m… reyes is 4.5 million and lazied his way to 58 stolen bases last-year he’s also the best SS in MLB not named Hanley Ramirez… delgado is old, but he still ops’d higher than d-lee.
David Wright, Jose Reyes, K-Rod, Murphy, pelfrey and maine are all under 30.
They have the best SP in baseball.
Minaya did a great job this offseason so far, he got K-rod well below his original asking price. He got putz for practically nothing.
The mets are a starting pitcher away from contention, while the phillies are getting worse.
Does anyone else really see Moyer repeating his year last year, and Utley having the same monster first half next year? Lidge will remember who he is in due time, too.

well...The phillies aren't getting worse..
They signed ibanez, which should produce more than pat the bat and be just as horrible in the OF. Utley is a stud, and yes i believe he will put up good numbers again.

Just off the top of my head:
If I had to name the top five pitchers in baseball, right now I’d pick Johan, Webb, Sabathia, Lincecum, and Hamels. All of them have at least one Cy, sans Cole. Looking at BR’s career ERA+ as a quick-n-dirty scale:
Johan: 144
Webb: 143
Lincecum: 139
Hamels: 133
Sabathia: 121
I love Johan, but really value Webb’s ability to throw 4-5 different pitches, all well.

Ah. I took the comment to mean
Best Starting Pitching, not best Starting Pitcher.
A case could be made for Santana being the best starting pitcher. No way do they have the best rotation. Hell, they don’t even have a full rotation right now.

it will be hard
for utley to have a monster 1st half when he wont even be playing!!!
best sp in baseball sure didnt win the cy young last year!!

Reyes, you'll recall
has an attitude problem.
Best SP is baseball? Are you really a soccer fan first?
Putz injured last year? An 8th inning guy is not going to take this team over the yellow brick road, by the way. I think the mets will start out quick in the new ballpark and by may the ny post will be calling guys out on the front page. It’s an average ballclub.

yes johan is the best SP in baseball
care to disagree? putz is better than gregg.
the mets have the best 8th and 9th inning guys in baseball. Although it’s not the be all and end all, it’s something they lacked last year. they will probably get a starting pitcher, a LOOGY and possibly an outfield slugger.
The new york rags have about as much credibility when it comes to baseball as jay mariotti. Reyes’ attitude problem didnt seem to affect him too much at the plate or at short, so I dont think that matters too much.
The mets are a 90 win team. The phillies switching burrell for ibanez is not exactly a wash. They are the same person defensively, but offensively, burrell gets the nod even after you adjust the park effects.
Despite winning the WS, the phillies are overrated.

I gotta disagree.
There’s still something that bothers me with your team (NYM), and I think there is some talent, but I would have thought that Minaya would have been gunning for SP this offseason. I think you are assuming that some of the regulars will produce at the same clip they did last season. Injuries and age have a funny way of catching up on teams.
Please don’t try to hammer the cubs for the gregg move – he is a player, and we shall see if he works out in Chicago. The Mets very next move after Krod should be a SP and you know it.
Bottom line is I think Minaya has been playing on somebody else’s dime for far too long. And this season will see him either be a hero or more likely go down in flames. He’s in the lower ranks of gm’s, imo.

Wouldnt Cashman be spending like a drunken sailor
When Minaya only made 2 signings. Im sure Putz isnt happy about being a set up guy, but thats a pretty nasty combo;especially since Putz is probably more of the strikeout pitcher of the two at this stage

I have absolutely no idea what you're talking about.
The Mets have made two significant transactions thus far, and neither was spending money like a drunken sailor. If you want to look at spending monies, look at the Yankees.
The Mets still have gaping holes – like LF and SP – so maybe they are still in the market for a few players, but up to this point there is nothing to suggest they are being crazy in spending.

Their offense is in shambles. Their pitching outside of wang and CC aren’t spectacular either.

Yanks have it right though, imo
overpaid for CC (not a well-conditioned athlete), yet snagged Burnett. They need hitters though as pointed out above.

I don't know what isn't well-conditioned about CC.
He won 19 games and a Cy two years ago, won 17 total games this year, and single-handedly put the Brewers in the playoffs. Just because he doesn’t look like a typical pitcher doesn’t mean he’s not successful.
And the market does not make it look like he is overpaid. Johan signed a $140 mil contract last year, and $20 mil more for an additional year of service one year later in the MLB season is by no means overpaying. He was far and away the best pitcher available, a recent Cy Young winner, and showed no signs this season of decline (who knows after the way the Brewers treated him). I really disagree with your claim, like, completely.

No, that's wrong, too.
The New York teams—and Boston—often dictate the market. For instance, K-Rod’s signing has now dictated how much Fuentes will get with the Angels or whoever sign him.

Saying CC is overpaid is a matter of opinion.
With a billion-dollar ballpark opening up, I’m not so sure this wasn’t a bad deal. He’s 27 now and shows no sign of slowing. Him and Johan have been the two best FA pitchers in the last few years, without a doubt.
However, there was a $140/6 year deal with the Angels on the table (presumably), which is just about the exact same deal the Yankees signed him for, but with an additional year tacked on. So no, the Yankees didn’t necessarily overbid, because the Angels had the same deal on the table sans one additional year.

I'll agree with that. CC is from California though, and might tire
of the crap he receives in NY. He’s a mellow dude by trade, and very well spoken. I will look with great interest on how he handles all of the douche reporters’ jabs in NY. Good signing, I wish him well. I still have my doubts that the new ballpark(s) don’t hurry the decisions of Cashman and Minaya this offseason though. I’ve seen this movie before.

which doesn't impress me
his +4 ERA, his 86 walks and his medical history don’t impress me a bit. Considering who he is replacing, the difference is negligible at most. he’d have to top mussina’s numbers last year to make more than a 1 or 2 game impact for the 09’ yankees. If him and WANG put up 400 innings combined, they might make the wildcard. But they still can’t hit.

To stay on topic, though
Mets greatest needs purportedly heading into winter mtgs. were:
1. Closer
2. SP
3. 1B?
11. 8th inning guy (Seattle’s closer)?

agreed an 8th inning guy wasn't their highest need
but delgado produced a 125 ops + last season, they signed his option. they got bullpen help without giving up too much. chavez and heilman aren’t that good… they got putz on the cheap.
if the cubs got a solid closer for cotts and cedeno, I wouldn’t complain.

Just something to think about
I think Santana alone had 9 ND’s because the bullpen blew leads when he pitched. Don’t quote me on that. Sorry I’m too lazy to look it up. But give them 5 of those wins and they make the playoffs. Possibly a completely different playoff picture

Mets and Yankees
They both have addressed their problems.
Mets – They came into this offseason with some questions. A number 2 starter would be nice (as Maine/Pelfrey are more 3’s), bullpen help was a thought, and another bat somewhere. Out of all those needs, what area should they have addressed before the bullpen? Spending all their money on a number 2 starter and not addressing the pen is interesting, but this was a team last year that, had they had a pen, would’ve been in the playoffs. The offense, even accounting for regressions, should be okay.
They still have a rotation question. They can probably fill one spot with Jon Niese, who projects as your typical mid-rotation lefty, but they need one more arm beyond that. I think they are expecting Nick Evans and Dan Murphy to fill in on offense to address some needs. Murphy can hit. There’s indications they can make one more mid-level move. I expect them to go after a starter, maybe to bring Oliver Perez back or sign someone else. I’m not so sure that they wouldn’t be better off going after a bat, though. That said, if they buy Evans and Murphy helping out, and I buy Murphy by himself and I buy Evans/Church as a platoon, then going after that starter makes some sense. They’ll be looking for an innings eating type of starter, so I won’t be surprised if the Cubs revisit Marquis with them, allowing them to add another bat (assuming Murphy stays in the OF, then their need would be at 2nd, as they’ll give Delgado a shot entering the year).
By midseason, Fernando Martinez could be ready, allowing Murphy to go to the infield if Castillo (or Delgado) are struggling.
Yankees – The lineup, as was discussed in a post, isn’t bad. It has the chance to have bouts of excitement mixed in with bouts of struggles. That said, their biggest need was pitching, so going that route made sense. I still think they need another bullpen arm, but they’ll work to get that 5th starter first, I think. As it stands, their starting positional players look to be
C – Posada
1st – Swisher
2nd – Cano
SS – Jeter
3rd – Rodriguez
RF – Nady
CF – Cameron (if the trade happens)
LF – Damon
DH – Matsui
My guess at a lineup
1. Damon
2. Jeter
3. Matsui
4. Rodriguez
5. Cano
6. Nady
7. Swisher
8. Cameron
9. Posada
It’s a potentially deep lineup, but for the middle has questions. It could be good … but it could struggle. If you buy Swisher bouncing back and potentially raking with that RF porch, and I do, then the lineup could be much better, as Swisher could go to the 3rd or 5th spots, sliding some folks down. As I type this, I think that flipping Cameron and Posada is a thought.
Their system will have enough chips to spin to make moves at midseason, particularly since Hughes isn’t in a key role. He’s lost some luster, but he’s still a valuable asset who, according to some, showed his former potential in Arizona Fall League. I expect the Yankees to add that 5th starter (CC, Burnett, Wang, Joba) and then to potentially find a way to add a pen arm unless there’s a good value bat available.

I don't understand you logic here...
I see Minaya “chasing” the Pillies, nothing else, in an effort to secure another year of 2nd place in the NL East. I really think the guy has been afforded at least 2 years too many, and he will be gone by Sept/Oct.
If Minaya wasn’t fired on the spot for giving Luis Castillo that ridiculous 4-year contract, he never will be.
