"Every player should be accorded the privilege of at least one season with the Chicago Cubs. That's baseball as it should be played - in God's own sunshine. And that's really living." ~Alvin Dark

No, for posterior's sake. Hers.

Yes, yes ... winter is indeed a pond upon which all of us must skate, braving frostbite and runny noses in the hopes that our cars will start and we shan't embarass ourselves slipping on a patch of black ice. Spring is more a quagmire of cold mud and slush, and fall is a pile of fallen leaves that may or may not hide a pile of doggy doo-doo. But summer, ah summer is an oasis of endless green that disappears all too quickly beneath our feet as we rush through its warm, glorious bliss.

Who cares?

We can just put an asterisk on them.

We may not need to.

It all depends on local ordinances.

How is it that this gal and Milton have not been identified in real life? Has to be fewer than 6 degrees of separation here

No, but I was about six rows behind

We never made it on TV (thank Baby Jesus), but it was a bizarre scene all around. I felt really bad because I couldn’t look away.

Wow, she must've inspired Ryan Dempster.

He pitched a complete game with 11 Ks. And Dome hit a three-run homer. Why don’t I remember this game better?

I wish she would have

gone to the playoff game he started. The Cubbies should put her on the payrole.

From the Chicago Sun-Times, 1897.

Letter:

"DEAR EDITOR: I am 8 years old.
"Some of my little friends say there is no Milton.
"Papa says, ‘If you see it in THE SUN-TIMES it’s so.’
"Please tell me the truth; is there a MIlton?

“Madison Cub Fan,
Presumably in Madison.”

Editor’s response:

MCF, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except [what] they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, MCF, whether they be men’s or children’s, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, MCF, there is a Milton. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! how dreary would be the world if there were no Milton. It would be as dreary as if there were no Madison Cub Fans. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which Cubdom fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Milton! You might as well not believe in Red Sox! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the gates on Opening Day to catch Milton, but even if they did not see Milton coming in, what would that prove? Nobody sees Milton, but that is no sign that there is no Milton. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see Red Sox dancing on the infield at Fenway? Of course not, but that’s no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You may tear apart the baby’s rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, nor even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, MCF, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Milton! Thank Wrigley! he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, MCF, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.
