Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Slightly OT: Henry Blanco's brother kidnapped and murdered

Horrific news concerning the Blanco family has been released today. Apparently the brother of Henry Blanco, Carlos, was kidnapped and shot to death. He was held for ransom for 200 million Bolivares (can someone convert that to the dollar please!) and apparently Henry was trying to negotiate with the kidnappers. The full article is here: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20081202&content_id=3698518&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb&partnerId=rss_mlb

Devistating news of course for Henry. And going a little bit off the topic of this article, do you think he is going to resign with us?

Just saw this

Sad. Thoughts with Hank White and the White family. Didn’t this happen to another major leaguer not too long ago?

Yes, I remember.

I believe it was Ugueth Urbina’s mother who was kidnapped and rescued in Venezuela when he was with pitching for Tigers.

Hey, it's a new century!

What a downward spiral he took.

Locked up in a prison in Venezuela right now, if Im not mistaken.

Here is some info on it

On November 7, 2005, Urbina was arrested by Venezuelan authorities on a charge of attempted murder for an incident that occurred a few weeks earlier, on October 16.1 Urbina allegedly attacked five farm workers on his property whom he had accused of stealing a gun, and tried to injure them both with a machete and by attempting to pour gasoline on them. On March 28, 2007, Urbina was convicted of attempted murder.2 Additional charges included illegal deprivation of liberty and violating a prohibition against taking justice into his own hands. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison.2

when asked about his performance against the Reds - Lieber said the following
"Well obviously I made some bad pitches today, left to many over the plate and they got good wood on the ball. The only good thing was that I was able to get back into the clubhouse earlier then I planned so I could eat."

Crikey. Talk about a temper.

Yes, yes ... winter is indeed a pond upon which all of us must skate, braving frostbite and runny noses in the hopes that our cars will start and we shan't embarass ourselves slipping on a patch of black ice. Spring is more a quagmire of cold mud and slush, and fall is a pile of fallen leaves that may or may not hide a pile of doggy doo-doo. But summer, ah summer is an oasis of endless green that disappears all too quickly beneath our feet as we rush through its warm, glorious bliss.

didn't he put them in a barn and attempt to light the barn on fire?

Yeah, they're supposed to PUT OUT fires.

And I’m tempted to try and make a joke about a guy with a machete being a “guess-hitting hack,” but that would be inappropriate.

Not off topic at all, my friend...

This is absolutely ridiculous. What is the matter with some people in this world?

Condolences go out to Blanco’s family.

This may affect his decision on whether or not to continue laying baseball.

meh I put that because its not directly Henry Blanco its his family

but, either way, I agree with your statement

That's really sad...

…and quite chilling. I would guess that, whenever word gets around that you’re a major league baseball player making millions of dollars, your family is immediately deemed fair game for kidnapping/ransom plots like this. My condolences to Henry and his family.

The gap between the poor and the wealthy have made targets of major league players’ families.

My condolences to Henry Blanco and his family.

Kidnappings of famous and rich people have become common in Venezuela, unfortunately, after President Chávez armed every civilian he could to establish his Bolivarian People’s Guard. That way, even thugs got arms from the government and the crime rate has risen to one of the highest in the hemisphere.
