DeRosa to play in WBC?

Source: DeRosa accepts Team USA invite

Good for him but you have to wonder now how that will effect how he plays in the season. How do you guys think this will effect his season? Good, Bad, or not at all? It should be interesting to see especially since it is already doubtful he will recreate his 2008 season and with a shorter off season for him now it will be interesting to see how he does.

i gotta fill in the rest of the words so I guess i'll just say Merry Christmas to everyone...

Good for him

I suspect this will have little to no effect on his season, perhaps they should ease him back into spring training afterwards.

DeRosa strikes me as someone who would be honored to play in this tournament, rather than avoiding it like the plague, so I hope he plays well and brings home the title after we flamed out last time

I wonder why he didn't offer to play for Italy...

… I assume he’s eligible.

Because I assume

he’d like to play for a team that wins a game, if given the choice. Well, Italy could beat Canada if they got lucky and enough ringers. Games against the USA and Venezuela are probably lost causes for Italy,

Just guessin'

DeRo was on Italy’s roster in 2006, but was forced to back
 out by Buck showalter.

He probably was asked by Italy again, but was waiting to
see if Team USA wanted him — he was not on Italy’s
Preliminary roster in November, but could still be added.

Being selected by Team USA will boost his chances of making the All-Star team.

The question is: Will he make the final cut?

Utleys hurt...

So I think he would have a great chance if Roberts doesnt want to play

I presume he didn't see your FanShot.

Again, I would ask people to check BOTH FanPost and FanShot lists to see if your topic has already been covered.

I dont remember any significant injuries last time...

People tend to get up in arms about things like the WBC/Olympics/World Cup, but are usually unsubstantiated.

Luis Ayala

was the big one from the last WBC. He got injured and was out for the 2006 season. Of course, it wasn’t like he was abused in the WBC—his arm was about ready to fall off and it would have likely happened the first week of the season if it didn’t happen in the WBC.

What happened more was that players who competed in the WBC got hurt during the season and people blamed it on their WBC participation. This is because every ballplayer who did not play in the first WBC was healthy for the entire 2006 season. Except Nick Johnson, of course.

Part of that was probably b/c it was new

And unprecedented in Major League history (I think..its gotta be)…..but I dont see how this would be any different than a lot of Latinos who play all summer. I can see how someone who is coming up on FA in winter of 09 would sit out, but the flip side of it is, it might make you get off to an even hotter start playing meaningful games in March. Its not like they have to travel all that far, and the tourny is, what, 2 weeks?

In the end, I think its tremendous for the game and a great tournament….so hopefully players will want to represent US and their countries.

Though Im a bit worried about our pitching so far, I think Lackey is our best starter so far.

U-S-A, U-S-A!

I would love to see the USA win the WBC after not making it to the semifinals in 2006. The USA never got a chance to use its major leaguers in the Olympics. I’m still amazed that the Americans, managed by Tommy Lasorda, won the gold medal in 2000 . This is a great opportunity for American major leaguers to win an international baseball competition.

The US Team

in 2006 weren’t taking it seriously. Or more precisely, they hadn’t gotten into mid-season shape by March and they got creamed by the Asian and Latin teams who had been training the entire off-season. By the time the US team got to the games, they realized that they were still in off-season mode and it was too late to catch up. They got caught napping.

I hope that doesn’t happen this year. They moved it back to later in the month and I don’t think that anyone planning to play is going to be surprised this season with what good shape the other teams are in.

by Josh77 on Dec 22, 2008 6:17 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

The other thing is...

… they’ll be playing exhibitions with major league ST squads both before and after round 1, to stay in game shape.

They might have underestimated the other nations as well...

And they had some streaky players on the team, which is murder in a short series like this….and we relied on Dontrelle Willis which never helps

Maybe Fukudome...

can get some early seasoning if he goes through with playing for Japan.

I don’t have a problem with players playing for the pride of their country.

Injuries happen…

I know I'll be making every effort...

…to catch a few of Dome’s ABs to see how he looks. There’s a lot of ways to look at his involvment:

  • Good, because he’ll get some extra ABs against live pitching to perhaps work on some adjustments he’s (we hope) making, and playing with his countrymen might give him a morale boost going into the season.
  • Bad, because he could fall back into bad plate habits playing alongside Japanese players and his involvement may accelerate the fatigue factor that appeared to plague him this past season.

I guess we’ll see what we see.

Yes, yes ... winter is indeed a pond upon which all of us must skate, braving frostbite and runny noses in the hopes that our cars will start and we shan't embarass ourselves slipping on a patch of black ice. Spring is more a quagmire of cold mud and slush, and fall is a pile of fallen leaves that may or may not hide a pile of doggy doo-doo. But summer, ah summer is an oasis of endless green that disappears all too quickly beneath our feet as we rush through its warm, glorious bliss.

I assume all the WBC games are being televised somewhere?

Either via ESPN or MLB Network? If so we can all check that out.

Yes

They’re all on ESPN or the MLB Network. Of course, the Japan games will be on at 5 am. I’m going to guess that the MLB Network will show them again later in the day.

I'd think so.

Will they also be available through the MLB.TV archive?

Yup.

According to this SI article, “All 39 games will be televised on either ESPN or the MLB Network.”

Also, according to this blog post, “MLB Network will be broadcasting 16 World Baseball Classic games this spring, along with a nightly show dedicated to the WBC.”

I heard that Joe Morgan was going to be the solo commentator on all 39 games for ESPN. He'll

have all that time to explain how he would have personally won the WBC for the US if it was held “back in his day”.

How could playing in the WBC

create more ST problems for DeRo in 2009 than
having heart surgery did last year?

I was just thinking the same thing.

He had a career year after having a serious health problem at the start of spring training. He’ll probably be as healthy as he’s ever been going into 2009. I doubt it will affect him at all.
