Snowy Tuesday Afternoon Name That Cub

Ok Everyone...You had fun with Fonzie2178's "unknown" Cub. Now we have a real hard one. Here are the clues. This picture was taken at Wrigley Field. The player is a Pitcher and yes, he was on the major league roster when this picture was taken. His major league career was extremely short. He was acquired by the Cubs in a very famous trade. NAME THIS CUB! (sorry Al...I know I emailed this picture to you to use, but I just couldn't keep this to myself any longer)

Dear Santa:: All I want for X-mas this year is an official 2009 Jake Peavy Cubs Jersey. Oh and a Beimel one too. I've been a real good guy for the most part!!!

My first thought which I know is wrong

was George Frazier due to the famous trade clue. That’s too easy and Frazier was taller than this guy looks.

by rlpete on Dec 23, 2008 2:06 PM CST reply actions

not Frazier

but the famous trade clue is a big one.

He was acquired in the Dennis Eckersley trade but never got into a major league game.

DINGDINGDING!!!!

I thought this would be going a bit longer. Leonette was active on the Cubs for 3 days in July of 1987, but never got into a game

I figured it was something like that

Didn’t have time to get through all the 80’s trades.

by rlpete on Dec 23, 2008 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

Did somebody say my name?

I would have gotten this, if only I would have logged in earlier. Leonette got so close to the majors (technically he was a major leaguer for a few days), but he’ll never have his name in the Baseball Encyclopedia. It’s sort of sad, which is why I changed my user name when BCB switched to version 2 a while back. Mark Leonette shall not be forgotten.

Did you grow a mustache like that, too?

Yes, yes ... winter is indeed a pond upon which all of us must skate, braving frostbite and runny noses in the hopes that our cars will start and we shan't embarass ourselves slipping on a patch of black ice. Spring is more a quagmire of cold mud and slush, and fall is a pile of fallen leaves that may or may not hide a pile of doggy doo-doo. But summer, ah summer is an oasis of endless green that disappears all too quickly beneath our feet as we rush through its warm, glorious bliss.

Kinda reminds me of Bill Buckner...

…but a lot skinnier.

Talk about Buckner...

When looking for some pictures for Al, I found some old pictures where he shaved his mustache. Boy did he look strange. I might post up one of these sometime.

I met another Bill Buckner on a gig.

He never played baseball beyond childhood, and had a good sense of humor about his famous name – although he admitted he wasn’t overly fond of spending time in Boston!
