Howry is a Giant
One year 2.75 million. For those of you who wanted to offer him arbitration ,you really think the Giants were in the mood to give up a draft pick for him ? I sincerely wish him all the luck against anyone besides the Cubs. I think he can rebound just as Eyre did when He gets in a situation where he will be used correctly and not abused. He gave us two very good years.

But seriously, I don’t know how much he has left in the tank. This year had to have messed with his head. I don’t know if he will be able to be a solid reliever next year for any length of time.

For those who said there was nothing that needed to be done to this team...
He was the only problem in my mind. Finding someone to replace howry.

Harsh.
Howry gave us 2 very solid years before the wheels fell off last year.

And solid years
for that other team from Chicago too, before the injury with Boston. There have been far worse in our bullpen over the years. Agreed — that was harsh.

parts...
… of solid years. For the first month or two of 2006 and 2007 he was not good.
by dmlichte on Dec 3, 2008 3:51 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The first month or two of 2006?
Do you mean the month where his WHIP was .84 and BAA was .208 or the one where his WHIP was .97 and his BAA was .220?
Players have bad months here and there; it’s called small sample size. You can say “parts of solid years” about any player, if you pick your end points creatively enough.
On the whole, Howry was excellent in 2006 and 2007. Calling him rubbish is lazy revisionism based on his awful 2008.
by Wreckard on Dec 3, 2008 3:57 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
first off...
.. I didn’t call him rubbish. Get a grip.
In 2007 his April ERA/WiHIP/BAA was: 3.65/1.46/.292 and in May it was 6.57/1.62/.314
He stared out well in 2006, though he did have a rough June. But my point is that in 2007 was not always solid and for a healthy chunk of the season he was downright bad. For a large portion of that season he was totally unreliable as a middle reliever.

… I should have noticed the prior post calling him rubbish, too.
I wouldn’t call him rubbish but Howry’s career did take quite a precipitous fall over his time here. He was obviously quite bad this year but he really had some stints, esp during 2007, that were quite the precursor. People want to blame Piniella for his use of Eyre but we tend to forget that there were some real long stints where both Eyre and Howry were just plain awful.

I agree.
I’ve probably caved in to the temptation to rip on Howry a few times over the past year, but I actually think he’s a class act who, when all is said and done, gave the Cubs a lot of good innings. He just had an awful 2008 and, like most Cubs fans, I had a really hard time watching him out there. I wish him the best in San Fran. It’ll be interesting to keep an eye on him.

Any Maddux updates?
This doesn’t deserve it’s own post, but I was wondering if there’s been any official word from Maddux that he is retired. The last I heard is that Boras said that Maddux probably would retire but that he hasn’t completely ruled out pitching in ‘09. If there hasn’t been any word by now, that would lead me to believe that he’s still thinking about pitching in ‘09 and that he’s just seeing what might come through via free agency before he makes his final decision.

Very good signing
Dave Cameron’s post at fangraphs about it explains it much better than I ever could.
http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/index.php/the-howry-signing/
Now, a good signing doesn’t mean he will succeed, but I like Howry’s chances. The one strike about Howry returning was that the fans had somewhat turned on him, but I wouldn’t be surprised if he had a better 2009 than say, Kevin Gregg.
Although I have to say, the guy who posted in the comment of the Cameron post did note something intriguing in that Howry went to the slider much more last year, so maybe there is something about age catching up to him fast. That said, within this market place, a team that needed pen arms could do much worse than Howry.
They’ve got a nice righty/lefty combo in the pen with Affeldt and Howry. Their bullpen looks better now, which should help that rotation. The purse strings are opening up, so if they can get a big, middle of the order bat, they might just be able to contend in 2009 in the NL West. That said, adding said bat is easier said than done, particularly when they look likely to waste money on Edgar Renteria.

Something tells me...
…he’ll be posting a 1,000-word Fanpost on the subject any second now.
Yes, yes ... winter is indeed a pond upon which all of us must skate, braving frostbite and runny noses in the hopes that our cars will start and we shan't embarass ourselves slipping on a patch of black ice. Spring is more a quagmire of cold mud and slush, and fall is a pile of fallen leaves that may or may not hide a pile of doggy doo-doo. But summer, ah summer is an oasis of endless green that disappears all too quickly beneath our feet as we rush through its warm, glorious bliss.

I can't believe all the people mentioning...
how he will bounce back, or perhaps be better than Gregg. Howry has a mediocre (at best) fastball and a worthless slider. That’s it. I don’t care if he’s pitching in the Grand Canyon, he’ll keep giving up long balls like it’s his job. Have fun in SanFran, where old, mediocre ballplayers go to spend the rest of their careers.
Ron Santo should sing TMOTTBG everyday. Period.

Wow
did everyone forget he was a pretty good bullpen arm for the cubs for 2 years. I don’t understand why everyone dislikes him so much.

because he only has one pitch
Seriously. Howry only has a fastball. When he’s spotting it and throwing with some movement, he’s fine. But it stands to make sense that a pitcher like this, whose fastball isn’t blazing and doesn’t move much, will start to get hit as he gets older. Opposing hitters know whats coming. I don’t think he’s the spawn of satan or anything but the course of his career makes sense.

It's not that we have forgotten
his first year here, he and Eyre were the best thing on this team. Since then, Howry has steadily sucked harder and harder. He has had moments of looking better but his overall was total crap. You are only as good as your last outing so to speak, and this guy has an entire season on which to judge him. He is a fine person, he is crap on the bump. Good luck to SF!

I understand that
but it doesnt explain the near celebration that this post is getting. Why not just respect what he did for us when he was performing. It seems as though a lot of people here forget that he was once pretty good for us.

I'm with you
I save that kind of glee for when someone who was completely worthless leaves. Howry was good for more than half of his time with the Cubs.

Once but not any more!
It’s a sweet thing that the one-pitch, can of gasoline has a new address! Good Luck and thanks, Bobby!

Howry did perform competently
There is just such a short shelf life for these guys. Part of it is impressions.
I remember when Remlinger came on board. I remember his first several appearances. I thought the man couldn’t be scored on. It was like Zeus came down to deliver thunderbolts.
Then reality set in.
Godspeed, Bob.
By the way, Worf is drunk right now. I have no idea what I’m posting. Fun, isn’t it?
The worst beer I had was pretty good.

Howry needs a park like Pac Bell
Or, whatever it’s called these days. His fastball dropped from the mid 90’s, to the low 90’s as a Cub. When you only have one pitch, and it has no movement, you will get hit if the velocity drops. Major league hitters can hit a straight, 90 mph fastball. At least Howry will be playing park with a cavernous centerfield.

Interesting.

Relief guys are the most fungible players in baseball
You never really know who’s going to be good one year and bad the next.
Howry and Eyre, on the whole, turned out to be good signings. But three-year deals for any reliever probably is a bit much.

In case you were wondering...(And related to mushrooms)
Here’s what Giants fans are also focusing on this offseason (besides Bob Howry).

Howry, the human Slo Mo ... gone at last ..
It was more painful to watch him pitch ANYTIME he got to the mound then even Dempster as he soared up and down with his closer fortunes ..
One thing is for sure, the game will end a whole lot faster now ..
