Marquis to Rockies ?

Our old friend Steve Phillips is reporting this on ESPN

According to ESPN's Steve Phillips, the Cubs and Rockies are close to a swap of starter Jason Marquis for reliever Luis Vizcaino (saw it scroll across the screen on ESPN2).  Marquis is set to earn $9.875MM in '09, while Vizcaino will make $3.5MM plus a $4MM option for 2010 with a $500K buyout.

If true and we are not adding more money this would be a god deal.

at least we get something of value for Marquis. hopefully this frees up enough $$ to sign a FA OF.

Well....

…. if there’s no additional money exchanged, the Cubs freed up $6m for 2009. I assume they’d exercise the buyout for 2010, as that payroll is already huge.

Not a bad move… Vizcaino is a serviceable middle reliever who had decent years in the NL, and also for the 2005 WS champion White Sox.

"Serviceable" is a serviceable word...

Vizcaino’s a 34 year old pitcher, who’s stats have been on a sharp decline the last few years. Vizcaino was a very “serviceable” pitcher back in December of 2004 when the Sox acquired him. Certain people mocked the Sox for making that trade, a trade that certainly helped the Sox win the 99 games and go 11-1 in the post-season, BTW. Then the Sox traded Vizcaino (and Chris Young) to get a “serviceable” pitcher in return.

A lot of people have mocked your "serviceable pitcher in return", too.

Pound for pound...

… many Cubbie fans bitterly criticize every move the Sox make but are quite “pollyannish” about Cubbie moves.

The Sox got 3 years and over 600 “serviceable” innings from Javy Vazquez. Many Sox fans, including me, got tired of Javy completely flopping in “big games” (he was terrible in his last six starts in ’08). The Sox traded Chris Young. That trade probably stings more to Cubbie fans than to me considering how he helped pound the Cubbies in that ’07 NLDS sweep.

Guzman's probably not in the running...

…because of his injury history. Hard to believe Samardzija has a shot, but so I’ve heard.

If he can pitch, he's in the running

Worse comes to worse he’s sent down to Iowa. But he’ll be given a shot. The Cubs have invested too much in him not to

Disagree.

If he can pitch, he’ll be in the bullpen with an outside shot of being the next Carlos Marmol. He doesn’t have anymore chance of being starter again than Kerry Wood has.

The competition will be Gaudin versus Samardz unless Hill has a miraculous ONEDEC and we then call it a LLIH

Marshall is a left handed arm still needed in the pen unless the Cubs suddenly find a true LOOGY.

OR

unless the Cubs engineer a bargain for a genuine top of the order pitcher

OR

sign Pettit

Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."

by Ivy Walls on Dec 31, 2008 11:00 AM CST up reply actions

Agree and disagree.

For better or worse, Neal Cotts was re-signed to be the token lefty out of the pen. He’s not, however, a LOOGY. (Check out his splits.) Honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Cubs weren’t even thinking LOOGY because Lou never seems to use one in situations that warrant it.

Assuming the Marquis trade goes through, Marshall will be first in line for the fifth spot in the rotation IMHO. Gaudin and Samardzija have outside shots at outcompeting Sean in spring training, but I believe one would have to really blow away Lou to get the job. And I don’t think either one will.

Yes, absolutely, if Peavy somehow resurfaces like the Great White Whale that he is and Captain Ah(endry)ab is able to harpoon his prey, Marshall will go back to the pen as swing man. Signing Andy Petite is an interesting idea, but I’ve neither heard nor read word one about such a move.

by daver on Dec 31, 2008 11:13 AM CST up reply actions

my guess

I imagine we are going to be eating some more money. Keep in mind that no team was really willing to take on Marquis a couple weeks back in the Peavy discussions, at least, according to rumors. I mean, some rumors had us eating 5-6 million dollars. Wouldn’t surprise me if we end up eating 3-4 more million, leading to us perhaps saving 2-3 mil.

Trading Marquis was never an absolute necessity, but was something to look at if we needed to save money somewhere. We do have some internal 5th starter options. Although it seems like the leadership prefers Marshall in the pen, they may revisit that. That said, Gaudin could be a thought. Samardzija may get worked into the mix, with Vizcaino as an arm in the pen. To be honest, the idea of Vizcaino/Gregg in the 7th/8th roles has me a bit shaky, not that Shark was a guarantee to be solid. Of course, if Guzman is solid, then maybe the answer is Angel.

The bigger question is what we are saving money for. Is there a surprise trade coming, or is this simply clearing room for Milton Bradley (perhaps the earlier rumors of a 145 million payroll perhaps too high)?

Anyhow, January is setting up to be an interesting month. It’s also possible that there will still be a decent amount of 2nd tier FA’s on the market come ST, at least, perhaps moreso than in recent years.

by toonsterwu on Dec 30, 2008 5:06 PM CST reply actions

Jeff Spellcheck, at this stage at least, is not an option for the bullpen

The Shark doesn’t have the pitching repetoire. And people are starting to be guilty of “jumping the shark” with this guy. I’m not even sold on him being an effective set-up man yet.

by BLou on Dec 30, 2008 5:59 PM CST up reply actions

According to your

sweet Lou Jeff is indeed going to get a chance to make the starting rotation.

by sue369 on Dec 30, 2008 6:24 PM CST up reply actions

Well....

The Shark may compete for a spot in the starting rotation in spring training but I’ll bet the ranch he doesn’t win a spot. Not with his limited pitching repetoire of current. I would think if there is a spot opened up and Hendry does not acquire anybody else then almost by default Sean Marshall is the guy. And I do not like that. Not at all. Marshall is going to prove a measureable downgrade over Jason Marquis.

I hope this trade rumor goes away. I don’t want Vizcaino clogging up a bullpen spot on top of my misgivings about trading away Marquis with no suitable starting pitcher replacement.

by BLou on Dec 30, 2008 6:31 PM CST up reply actions

But we have Rich Harden...the slayer of lineups!

What difference does it make who the 5th starter is? If Kevin Tapani comes out of retirement and takes the 5th spot we’ll still be okay! WE HAVE POWER PITCHING.

A measurable downgrade?

I’m not so sure about that. I think they’d be about the same. Maybe Marquis is a tick better, but overall performance wise, I think they can produce the same … provided that Marshall has the stamina.

Really a side note, but one of my concerns with Marshall is that, well, his velo doesn’t change much. His fastball sits in the upper 80’s and his curve is in the low 70’s. That said, his change, cutter, and slider all sit in the mid 80 range.

Anyhow, I have my doubts that the FO is willing to slide Marshall to the rotation, because that would necessitate adding another lefty pen arm from somewhere (personally, I’d prefer 2, as I don’t much care for Neal Cotts, nothing personal to his family and friends).

by toonsterwu on Dec 30, 2008 6:59 PM CST up reply actions

Hmmm...

I agree with Marshall, he does kind of seem like Ted Lilly light. We definitely can not pitch both of the two in the same series can we?

you know, Marquis was a whipping boy,

but damnit I’m actually going to miss having him on this team. He was a great 5th starter to have. He didn’t suck but he wasn’t great plus you knew he’d give you tons of innings. If we had only gotten him for roughly 3 million per year, the deal would have been excellent. He gets a bad rap, not because of his fault, but because Hendry decided to give him a huge salary.

With that, I hope Sean Marshall gets the oppertunity to start.

is the twin brother of the Theriot-does-the-little-things myth. I keep asking for evidence and never seem to get any.

When it comes to Jason, the problem is that Lou doesn’t trust him to eat the innings he could eat. Let him go ply his trade where he’ll be better appreciated. We’ll fill the 5th spot well enough.

Luis Vizcaino is a much traveled rubber arm

What he gives a team out of the bullpen is lots of appearances and innings. Sometimes he does that in fine fashion (e.g., White Sox in 2005), but more often than not he get lit up like a pinball machine. Suffice to say I am not wild about him automatically gobbling up a bullpen spot that could otherwise go to an Angel Guzman.

If you assume 7 bullpen roles then that probably leaves….Marmol, Gregg, Spellcheck, Gaudin, Vizcaino, Cotts, Marshall (or another lefty). Once you get past Marmol and Gregg that is a cast of characters that is to me one big collective question mark.

may be wishful thinking, but

TCR has
-Marquis trade may not be competed until next week
-Deal for Bradley is essentially done but also won’t be announced for a week or two
-Moving Marquis means the Cubs may once again hit up the Padres about Peavy
-Hendry might try to spin Vizcaino if he does acquire him
-DeRosa may still need to be moved if they go after Peavy

Gordon Wittenmyer describes this as...

…clearing the way for aquiring Milton Bradley…He describes the Bradley situation as “a would-be deal delayed in part by payroll issues”. The thought of Bradley’s injuries and baggage scares the hell out of me.

Seeing how it’s such a buyers market for outfielders this year, I sure hope Hendry mulls this one over a bit more.

by calicubfan on Dec 30, 2008 10:36 PM CST reply actions

Milton Bradley is the best option for the Cubs

I have said for a few weeks that I believe Hendry is locked in on Bradley. I’m deeply troubled by Bradley’s sordid past and violent demeanor, but of all the apparent options out there he is the best. So I would think our lineup might look like the following….

1. Soriano – LF (Lou is not going to move him out of leadoff spot)
2. Kosuke / Johnson Platoon – CF
3. Lee – 1st (I wish he were moved down, but he won’t be)
4. Ramirez – 3rd
5. Bradley – RF
6. Soto – Cat
7. DeRosa – 2nd
8. Theriot – SS

Bench….Johnson/Kosuke platoon, Gathright, Fontenot, Cedeno (or an upgrade), and I’m thinking Paul Bako makes triumphant return

Rotation….Zambrano, Harden, Dempster, Lilly, ??? (Marshall is the placeholder for now)

Pen (which has me worried)…Marmol (fine), Gregg (fine), Shark, Gaudin, Vizcaino, Cotts, another Lefty

Bradley sucks dude.

He’s a headcase and there’s no evidence that what he did last year will in ANYWAY be replicated. Dunn hits 40 homers a year, walks a ton, and can beat the shit outta anyone on the field. We need Dunn.

by dtpollitt on Dec 30, 2008 11:03 PM CST up reply actions

Hendry clearly is locked in on Bradley in my opinion

There is not a shred of evidence to suggest Hendry is pursuing Adam Dunn. The only thing to hang a hat on is the supposed comment by Dunn that he would love to play for the Cubs.

by BLou on Dec 30, 2008 11:08 PM CST up reply actions

I agree Jimbo is focused on Milton.

But I am disagreeing with your statement:

Milton Bradley is the best option for the Cubs

He’s not. Not even close. I hope when Milton’s value to this team is weighed, Jimbo looks very closely at (1) his history of injuries and (2) his insanity. Milton has played 141 games ONCE, and never more than that. Adam has played less than 152 games ONCE.

Here’s another take I haven’t heard too much about. This board was crying out immediately after the NLDS for a leader on this team, someone to steer the ship. I’m not saying Dunn is that person, but he is an offensive force and commands the highest of pitcher attention when he’s up to bat. Bradley intimidates no one. If we need a leader in the lineup, or at least someone to scare the bejebus out of, it can be Adam Dunn (or it is already Aramis…).

Milton is f-ing crazy, and that devalues him more in my book than anything else. I’d be welcome to compare Bradley vs. Dunn stats, if you want to go that route…

Bradley is a definite gamble

Look, the guy is a walking feces by a lot of standards. All one has to do to understand that is to review what led to his ugly departures from Montreal, Cleveland, Los Angeles and San Diego. Bradley is one of those guys who if you met him on the street you would say to yourself this dude has a great chance of either being in prison or dead by his 45th birthday.

But that said….

Bradley can flat out hit. And he plays like a man possessed. We could use a heavy dose of that in this sleepy country club Cubbie lineup. Somebody who serves as a shoe up the ass. And like I have said elsewhere, prior to his knee injury in September 2007 Bradley was a plus outfielder. Being over a year removed from surgery I feel good about his chances of once again being an asset in the outfield.

by BLou on Dec 30, 2008 11:31 PM CST up reply actions

He doesn’t play enough to be an everyday player! Since 2000 he’s played 817 games! Dunn’s played 1131 since 2001.

We have guys that hit the damn ball. We need POWER. Bradley has 103 HR to Dunn’s 278.

Milton isn’t a shoe up anyone’s ass. He’s a PAIN THE ASS.

Evey Hammond: Vi Veri Veniversum Vivus Vici. V: By the power of truth, I, while living, have conquered the universe.

by dtpollitt on Dec 30, 2008 11:38 PM CST up reply actions

Dunn was never going to happen

If we weren’t saddled with Alfonso Soriano in left field then I would be all gung ho for going after Adam Dunn. And quite possibly so too would Jim Hendry and Lou Piniella. But that isn’t the case. An outfield of Soriano – Kosuke – Dunn from left to right would be horrendously bad. No amount of home runs and run production could make up for an outfield corner situation like that.

by BLou on Dec 30, 2008 11:45 PM CST up reply actions

FWIW

Both Soriano and Fukudome’s UZRs are positive, in the 5-10 range. Meaning they are above average outfield defenders. An outfield consisting of those two and Dunn, assuming a late-inning replacement for Dunn and/or Dome, would NOT be bad defensively.

Theres Dunn, Abreu, Burrell; hell, even Manny’s still a FA (NO, I’m not suggesting we get Manny — although he’d be quite a spark in October). I’m just gonna be pissed, and so will all of us, if Bradley goes down with a knee injury in the middle of May!

He is here to grab maybe 150 at bats, provide defensive option at all three outfield spots and inject some much needed speed into the offensive and defensive equation at times.
