Aaron Miles to Cubs
According to another blog the Cubs have signed Aaron Miles to a 2 year deal...
http://www.thecubreporter.com/2008/12/31/cubs-sign-aaron-miles
Although this looks official with quotes from Hendry about it there is nothing on any other outlets that I can find. Can anyone else please confirm?
Kind of an interesting deal if it is indeed true. I would say it definitely paves the way to trade Cedeno and possibly even DeRosa.
It is now official...

If You Search For Aaron Miles on MLB.com
… you will see that he is a member of the Chicago Cubs. Nothing on Cubs.com. Bruce Levine confirmed this as well.
I think this means that DeRosa will be traded to shed some more payroll. Also, let the talks for Peavy to begin again, as some prospects tha they would get for DeRosa will likely be flipped to San Diego.

I don't think DeRosa is going anywhere...
I do think Fontenot and Cedeno are about to exit stage right.
Aaron Miles is 4-11 with a triple in 7 postseason games, so I’m Ok with this pickup.

As mentioned in the Bradley post
Miles was .317/.355/.398 in 379 AB’s and is a switch hitter. 80+ games at 2b, but 30+ at SS and some in the OF.
He appears to be a versitile option.

Moving DeRosa makes sense...
He has ample trade value given his versatility, low salary, and strong season. Miles provides an option to platoon three ways with Fontenot and Theriot in the middle infield and gives versatility as a switch hitter. I can’t see them trading Fontenot (because he’s a LH bat which Piniella covets) and I can’t see them trading Theriot (because he’s the only SS Piniella will play). You don’t keep four starting middle-IF.
It just seems like trading DeRosa while his value is high makes sense. Not to mention that trading DeRosa brings down the payroll number a bit more (depending upon whom he’d draw in return). Having Miles be the utility IF and Gathright/Johnson as the utility OF greatly diminishes the marginal value of DeRosa as a Cub, while trading him could return us something we need more.

Great Perspective
But from emotional vantage point, DeRo is one of my favorite Cubs. He combines professionalism, production, and personality. Guys like that are rare, and I hate to give him up. (Like a finger in an open wound after Kerry left.)
I know Miles can produce, but if he’s gonna take DeRo’s spot on the roster, he’s got huge shoes to fill.

Agreed again
Wood and DeRosa seemed to be the emotional leaders in 2008 and that will be missed since Lee and Ramirez are not outspoken. God help us if Big Z and Bradley are our leadership….at least it will be interesting!

I guess the answer is...
… management didn’t think the 2008 “emotional leaders” were good enough to lead a very good team to a single playoff win.
For those of us who do believe in team chemistry, they are obviously trying to change it. Whether that is a good thing or not remains to be seen.

Some believe that team chemistry is a myth...
They believe that chemistry is something people apply post-hoc to teams that win, and ignore the fact that team chemistry also appears in really bad teams. The 2006 Cubs team, for example, had excellent chemistry. They just stunk. Conversely, there are plenty of teams that have terrible chemistry that won.
The 2008 Cowboys didn’t lose because of chemistry problems. They lost because of injuries, poor offensive line play, and poor coaching.

I'm thinking...
more about the idea that talent alone does not guarantee a winning team. I use the word chemistry to describe that intangible concept.
While I firmly believe an team of all-stars will not always equal a championship, I concede the fuzzy concept of “team chemistry” might break down upon deeper analysis.
However, I would rather have players like Mark DeRosa, Bill Mueller or say maybe Drew Brees over the likes of the (arguably) more talented Terrell Owens, Albert Belle, or Pacman Jones.
Perhaps “synergy” (and a team’s ability to produce it) would be a better term than “chemistry.” Some guys make it easier to produce, and others make it harder or impossible.
To ignore that this impacts a team’s success would be grossly inane.

I'm not saying that getting along is completely irrelevant...
I’m just saying it’s significance is highly overvalued. Suggesting that you’d rather have a Bill Mueller or Mark DeRosa than a Terrell Owens illustrates that. Remember – every team Terrell Owens has played for has done better with him than without him.
But regardless of that discussion, I think that comparing “chemistry” in baseball and football is like apples and oranges. Football is much more of a team game than baseball. There are very few in-play situations in which teamwork comes into play. Baseball, moreso than any other team sport, relies on isolated individual success.
In baseball, individual talent plays an even bigger role in success than in any other sport. Whereas football and basketball and hockey require teamwork and coordination, the vast majority of baseball is determined by individuals – whether the pitcher makes the pitch; whether the hitter gets the big hit; whether the fielder makes the catch (or throw). These plays – not whether or not guys get along – ultimately decide who wins and loses.

I remember quotes from Lee and Walker...
Discussing it. Granted, it’s not great. But I find it interesting that the assumption you’ve made is that they don’t get along. Why would you make that assumption? Because they didn’t play well? Because they had Phil Nevin? Kind of illustrates my point.
The team didn’t have any publicized clubhouse incidents. There’s really nothing to suggest that the team didn’t get along. For a team that was as bad as they were, you’d think you’d see something happen, right? That’s another reason why I tend to believe that they got along.

Maybe.
But I also heard stories about a lot of those guys having “issues”, if not with each other, then outside the ballpark which caused them to lose focus on baseball.

If that's the case...
I’d say that it would have been a function of the losing leading to frustration, NOT the so-called “issues” leading to a lack of focus on baseball.
I think this is the classic “chemistry” fallacy. I think winning breeds chemistry, not the other way around. I think it’s a lot easier to get along when you’re winning than it is when you’re losing. And I think people inaccurately attribute success to chemistry after the fact, when it was probably winning that led to chemistry. I think this is especially true in baseball, which is much more of an individual sport than any other of the team sports.

Your point is well taken.
Obviously, most winning teams are going to find ways to like each other, because winning makes coming to work more fun. Imagine the 2006 Cubs, losing game after game, each player thinking on his way to the park, “How are we going to blow it today?”

I don’t think this impacts DeRosa as Miles isn’t likely a starter but who knows. He can also play outfield so he provides additional flexibility which is good with Piniella’s 12 man pitching staff. Nice even splits too for a switch hitter.

I would rather have
someone playing Defense in RF instead of paying Bradley to ride the DL as is his history…
I mean that just takes us back to Fukudome in RF and Johnson (or Gathright) in CF when Bradley is hurt….zero improvement from ’08 (at least Edmonds was an offensive threat).
So, yeah, I would prefer Dunn.

Miles
Guys like this get $2.5 million in this market? This is a flat F for Hendry. Miles can’t run, has no power and his only redeeming quality is that he’s versatile enough to play multiple positions. If this signals the end of DeRosa as a Cub, this is a HUGE downgrade. Miles will not hit .300 again and his OBP will regress back in the .320’s. Terrible signing.
Who needs a stinkin' tag line? What are they for anyway?

I doubt it
I imagine this is a way to make a Peavy trade happen. With Marquis gone, and with Lou and Jim wanting 2 pen lefties (meaning Sean likely stays there), that opens a need for another starter. Assuming that the mid-140 number was true, clearing Derosa and Marquis allows for Bradley and Peavy, if we can make the trade happen.
I imagine we’d be getting arms back from the Indians (perhaps David Huff) to flip to San Diego, if Levine is correct.

Pie was history the moment Gathright was signed...
well, realistically, he was probably history as of spring training 2008, when Piniella decided he wouldn’t be helpful to the 2008 team. That made him too questionable to be relied on this year, which meant he has to be traded.
I suspect Cedeno and Pie are traded this offseason. They have more value to a rebuilding team looking for cheap guys with potential than they do as end-of-the-bench guys on the Cubs’ roster. The Cubs found a cheap option to replace Pie in Gathright as the defensive sub/pinch runner. They will probably find a cheap veteran free agent to replace Cedeno.
Miles seems (to me at least) to be unrelated to either Pie or Cedeno. He seems too similar to the utility role played by DeRosa, minus the power obviously but with the ability to switch hit. I suspect he’s a cheaper replacement for DeRosa, with Bradley (if the rumors are true) taking over RF and Fontenot getting an expanded role in the middle IF.

This is going to be an interesting rest of the offseason...
The signing of Miles suggests a trade of DeRosa to free up payroll. Otherwise, it makes no sense to sign Miles.
With the potential trade of Marquis to shave more payroll, it would appear the Cubs are trying to clear payroll to get somebody else. Who knows who that would be?
I’ll be interested to see what becomes of Marquis and DeRosa moving forward. But this trade certainly makes me think they’re both getting traded this offseason.

Eh
Levine suggests a DeRosa match with Cleveland but does not say a deal is close. Levine considers the Cubs’ Milton Bradley signing “a done deal” and says they’ve back in the mix for Jake Peavy.
^MLB Trade Rumors
Hendry has been receiving a lot of phone calls about DeRosa, who teams like Cleveland could put at third base or move around between second base, third base and the outfield. If the Cubs were to trade DeRosa, they would also have more money for their payroll this year if they get prospects back in return. Although DeRosa may be the most popular Cubs among fans, teammates and media alike, he will play at age 34 in the last year of a contract in 2009.
Actually Blog from Levine.
It doesn’t really say he was going to be traded to the Indians. Just that it was an option

I’m not ready to say Peavy is back in the mix, but that would be an interesting offseason. A lot would ride on the health and production of Bradley, but it would be an interesting offseason. We’d get substantially better in the rotation (no weak spots at all), more athletic in the OF, and have more versatility in terms of switch hitters.

With the Cubs getting 3 pitching prospect from Cleveland, who I’m guessing Towers picked out, they may be able to hang onto Vitters. Hendry can move Cedeno, Pie, Hart and the 3 pitching prospects. That’s a good gain for SD considering their payroll situation and Peavy’s trade demand.
