DeRosa to the Indians
ESPN.com is reporting that DeRosa has been traded to the Indians for 3 players.
I do not like the sound of this!
Mark DeRosa, who had been rumored to be a part of three- and four-team scenarios in the Jake Peavy trade talks is finally headed out of Chicago -- but not in a deal for the San Diego Padres' ace.

DeRosa has been traded to the Cleveland Indians for three players, sources told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney.
DeRosa hit 21 home runs and drove in 87 runs for the Cubs last season, appearing in 149 games. He played 97 games at second base.
He will be 34 when the 2009 season begins.

I'll root for Cleveland this year
but I don’t mind at all if it means a rotation of Peavy, Harden, Zambrano, Dempster and Lilly.

The only way this makes sense is if we get Peavy. So the question is would you rather have

by nji232 on Dec 31, 2008 12:56 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
admittedly some...
Part loyalty (for two of my favourite Cubs), part that I feel that we swapped a top-tier closer/set-up man combo for a question mark (as far as Marmol being untested as a closed) and someone with strike zone issues.
I think that Miles/Bradley over DeRosa/? is a net loss. Particularly for a team with power/XBH struggles. I think that DeRosa to Miles is a big step down. I’m sort of in between on Bradley — I see upside but I’m not fully sold — but I think +Bradley, -DeRosa just swaps one hole for another. Especially if Bradley ends up missing a significant part of the season.
I do like Peavy and am happy to see Marquis go, but not nearly enough so to offset the rest.

It makes sense if Peavy is back in the mix...
If it’s just to clear space for Bradley, then it doesn’t make sense to me.
This is obviously a salary-clearing deal, just like the Marquis trade will be. Miles replaces DeRosa as the utility player but does it for less money (and less productivity). DeRosa will bring prospects, which can then be sent elsewhere for a better pitcher (like Peavy) to replace Marquis.

It's a dump if it clears space THIS year...
Trading DeRosa and signing Miles saves $3.5 million this year. For a team that has payroll limitations, that’s a relevant salary dump, even if it’s just this year.
I think the trade is certainly a salary dump. The only question is whether or not it’s just a move to clear space for Bradley or a move to clear space for Bradley AND to get someone for the rotation (after trading Marquis).

by BarryZuckerCub on Dec 31, 2008 12:49 PM CST up reply actions 0 recs
I'm not sure how you could suggest that...
Gregg is much worse than Wood, and means we devalue Marmol by taking him out of the fireman role and into the less important (and less used) closer role.
Miles is much worse than DeRosa.
Bradley/Fukudome/Johnson is probably an upgrade over Edmonds/Johnson/Fukudome, but that is no guarantee (especially if Bradley is frequently hurt.
There’s no guarantee that we get significantly better production from Gaudin/Marshall than we would have gotten from Marquis, and it puts a lot more emphasis on Harden’s health.
So we take two BIG steps back and gamble on marginal improvements in two other spots with the risk of big steps back there too. Where is it a step forward?

Fontenot was protected by Lou. He was put in situations where he could succeed. DeRosa, on the other hand, played nearly every day, and sometimes, didn’t know where till right before the game.

Well, we'll have to wait and see what magic Hendry has
I don’t see how these three arms help us make a Peavy deal, and I don’t see these three arms helping us much this year. Stevens is nice and could perhaps help in middle relief, but we have a lot of righty arms for pen roles, along with the just added Vizcaino. Gaub adds to our lefty depth, mainly lefty pen depth, in the lower levels, which is nice, but eh. Archer is a decent power arm.
Maybe these assets develop, but a win now asset like DeRosa that likely would’ve netted 2 picks and offered versatility? Maybe San Diego has an interest in them, but I wonder if our budget situation is simply so tight right now that we needed to cut so much to simply add Bradley, who may hit 10 mil AAV, if not more? Maybe Stevens is meant for the pen so that Samardzija can go to the rotation (which I don’t want, but that could be a plausible reason for this deal, along with cutting costs).
Ugh … this was so exciting an hour ago … right now, not so exciting.

to add Bradley, then other guys could have been moved or not kept. Why keep Reed Johnson? Why get Gaithright when Pie’s cheaper? Why keep Gaudin? Why not try to deal Vizcaino?

It ALSO says that the Peavy deal is not dead...

So I think it’s semantics to say that DeRosa trade simply clears space for Bradley. It may ALSO clear space (and add potential trade prospects) for Peavy.
Or, it may not. Hopefully, it does.

It may also be that trading Marquis and DeRosa gives us $20 million, which gives Hendry the room to add TWO players. In that case, it would just be semantics on saying DeRosa clears space for Bradley.

Don't forget
The Padres can use Petco to take “serviceable” middle-relievers and turn them into “Can’t miss super-stud closers-in-waiting” — so getting some solid arms might be a good play for them in the long run. They can take these guys with their new higher values after a season in SD, and dump them to the Yankees for legit prospects.
But mostly, it sounds like the Pads have to cut payroll in order to make the divorce proceedings go more smoothly.

I Just got my questioned answered by Callis!!!!
Bren, NY: Any idea what the Cubs may or may not be doing with these pitchers they just got from Cleveland for DeRosa?
Jim Callis: (2:10 PM ET ) The Cubs just flipped DeRosa for Jeff Stevens, John Gaub and Chris Archer. This looks like the prelude to another deal, possibly for Jake Peavy. They’re on the verge of dealing Jason Marquis to the Rockies, clearing his salary, something else they wanted to do before getting Peavy. My guess is some or all of those pitchers go to San Diego with Josh Vitters and others (Kevin Hart?) for Peavy. They’re about to sign (it may be official) Aaron Miles to fill in at second base, too.

Remember a few weeks ago
when she would obsessively speculate the imminent trading of DeRosa, without any outside media saying anything similar (i.e. before the WInter Meetings)? Yeah, well, she was right all along. I believe she is a Cubs fan overall – she sent me a DVD copy of the WGN anniversary special … someone interested only in DeRo would not give a rat’s ass about Jack Brickhouse or Milo Frigging Hamilton.

Did he?
OK, you divined the logic that if anyone was going to be traded in addition to Marquis, it would be DeRosa, because he was the only tradeable contract that would save any money and get something of value back.
But Hendry was not saying in day-glo or any other color scheme that he needed/wanted to cut payroll. The public goals of getting more left handed, more athletic, whatever, could be done with one free agent signing and certainly didn’t require a trade.
What did you hear so clearly that no one else heard? (Prior to the first media mention of DeRosa in a Peavy 3-way)?

Actually, his co-author was Teflon Lou
1. Lou wanted him gone after 2007, to be replaced by Kaz Matsui or Brian Roberts.
2. Lou batted him lower in the order than he deserved.
3. Lou treated him like a utility player rather than a starting 2B.
4. Lou has complained about not having a LHB in RF despite being given Jacque Jones, Cliff Floyd, Jim Edmonds, and Kosuke Fukudome. While none of those guys are all-stars (well, Dome was but should not have been), Milton Bradley won’t be healthy enough to make the all-star team either.
5. Lou refused to take any responsibility for the playoff failure (a condition known in Denver as Shanahanitis), instead insisting that he needed better, more left-handed, players than those who won 97 games during the regular season.
6. Crane Kenney at first announced a $130M payroll figure, then revised it to $140M. Simple spreadsheet arithmetic showed that either Harden or DeRo would have to go to afford a FA RF.
7. Lou and Hendry both said that they wanted to get “more athletic”.
Managers tend to speak volumes with their handling of players, and I have learned through the years to read their message.

This is why...
…I’m holding out some hope that this is a precursor to either Peavy or maybe Brian Roberts (can’t believe I just typed that) or maybe a third player no one is expecting.
Having read toonsterwu’s recent minor league lists, it seems to me the Cubs system is pretty well stocked with mid-level pitching prospects, so I don’t see why Hendry would throw three more on the pile. Although “the DeRosa Three” don’t appear much to write home about, perhaps they rated highly with San Diego’s scouts.

Therefore, I need to get banned by Al so that DeRoMyHero can be forever retired on BCB. I need one or more of my BCB compatriots to volunteer to be a mambochicken so that I can demonstrate a thorough knowledge of French and get Al to pull the plug.
