Derosa traded to Indians
Buster Olney is reporting that Mark DeRosa has been traded to the Indians for three prospects. By the time this is up there will probably be 7 more posts, but I didn't see one so I threw it on here. All I know is there has to be something else in the works here. A contending team doesn't get rid of one of it's most valuable players for prospects. So I expect something else to happen shortly. And, not just Aaron Miles.
Here's the link.

I'll be curious
What the final result is. Let’s Go Tribe (the Indians sister site to BCB) has a link to a Cleveland prospect site that suggests a very minimal return, with pen arm Jeff Stevens as the centerpiece. That would have me a bit flummoxed, but we’ll have to wait and see.

Bleh
Jeff Stevens, John Gaub, and Chris Archer for DeRosa?
That makes me sick. I don’t see how those two (Gaub and Archer) improve our shots in any other deal, so either
a) We’re trying to make two FA splashes
b) Our financial situation is tighter than previously speculated and we needed to clear a lot of money to simply land Bradley

Hmpf. This is not good news.
Maybe Peavy isn’t so likely after all.
Yes, yes ... winter is indeed a pond upon which all of us must skate, braving frostbite and runny noses in the hopes that our cars will start and we shan't embarass ourselves slipping on a patch of black ice. Spring is more a quagmire of cold mud and slush, and fall is a pile of fallen leaves that may or may not hide a pile of doggy doo-doo. But summer, ah summer is an oasis of endless green that disappears all too quickly beneath our feet as we rush through its warm, glorious bliss.

honestly,
i would’ve preferred keeping DeRosa versus the junk that we just picked up. Okay, these guys aren’t exactly junk, but for a team in a win now mode, they don’t contribute much (stevens, perhaps, but we are loaded with pen depth), and unless San Diego decides to take a long range view on things, I don’t see how this fits San Diego’s needs, per the previous rumors on what they wanted.

Yeah, I was assuming...
…the arms the Cubs picked up were tailored to San Diego’s needs, but it doesn’t appear that way. So I’m confused as usual.

i guess
if the payroll was closer to 140, if not in the upper 130’s, then these moves would be necessary. We were in the 133-137 range, based on my rough calculations, and shaving off close to 9 million nets us that FA OF.
I know the reports suggest that new ownership may let us pursue Peavy next week … but how are we going to get the assets together to make said deal? The beauty of a DeRosa deal was shaving costs and finding assets to send.
That said, maybe the Padres really like Archer and/or Gaub. I could see them taking a liking to stevens out of the pen.

Gaub
Struck out 100 in 64 innings. He has some value.
Stevens is close to MLB ready. I don’t think we would do this deal unless we had another deal in place.

side note on Gaub
he does have a plus curve, iirc, which allows guys in the lower levels to rack up K’s, so I’d take it with a grain of salt.
If I remember the report on him before injury/surgery, he used to have three plus pitches. I don’t remember, though, the velocity coming back to the same range, but I don’t track other systems that closely. If he does get his velo back, then yes, he’s a very nasty arm. If not, he’s your run of the mill lefty with a plus curve.
Archer is a decent arm, but a lot of development … and a lot of bust ability.

wrong scouting report on Gaub
it’s actually a slider, at least according to Indians fans, and he has touched the low-90’s again …

i'm bummed.
i loved dero!
I used to be "Jones," but I got swooped on the redesign.

Couldn’t agree more. This guy was everything, everwhere. He also loved being a Cub and was clearly a great teamate.

It's a business
DeRo was expendable.
His skill set was redundant (slow, power, right handed)
His contract was the most tradable
He is coming off a career year and could be traded for the most value.
I am sorry to see him go, but the Cubs need to free up money and this is the best way to do it.

i don't think anyone has a problem with dealing dero
it’s a question of what’s next.
dealing dero was always on the menu this offseason. but … if this is it, what do these three assets do for us? on paper, not much, outside of stevens perhaps stepping in the pen.
if this is a prelude to another move, then we’ll have to wait and see to be able to judge.

If they clear salary, then that is good enough
Let’s face it, there apparently wasn’t a huge market for Mark DeRosa. They were able to clear his salary to open the door for other moves. In my book, that is good enough.

huh
the phillies were interested before they added ibanez. The Twins were still interested. By most accounts, a lot of teams wanted DeRosa, unless something’s changed in the last few days.

I was responding to Ross that a lot of teams were seemingly interested in DeRosa. Not sure how to respond to your comment without knowing what yours is directed at.

Sigh.
They seem to be systematically dealing off popular players, to be replaced by angry ones.
If the angry ones win a World Series, I’ll be happy.

All I ask
Is for some off-season happiness. I can deal with the ups and downs of the regular season, but I’d at least like to go into it slightly optimistic, rather than terminally pissed off at the front office…

According to ESPN
“…the deals are seen as a precursor to the Cubs negotiating a deal with free-agent outfielder Milton Bradley.”
