Spring Can't Come Soon Enough
People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring. -- Rogers Hornsby

ahh
its in the mid-sixties down here in Austin today, just enjoyed a coffee and newspaper outside. i love Chicago but I don’t miss the winters.
Every player should be accorded the privilege of at least one season with the Chicago Cubs. That's baseball as it should be played - in God's own sunshine. And that's really living."
Sigh.
I gotta go shovel the remains of that snow. If it ever stops.

All-time great quote
Thanks for posting Hornsby’s quote again, Al! I look forward to those words every winter. It’s possibly the most poignant possible encapsulation of the off-season.
Days like today
are what make the days of summer so special.

I would gladly trade my summer
for your winter. You can always put on clothes, but you can only take off so many.

It's not the cold that bothers me so much...
… it’s the snow. Snow just makes everything in a city wet and dirty for months at a time.
You don’t have to shovel cold.

No, but you don't have 95-100 degree
temps from May -Sep. I think if you live in the north, you would trade for the heat and if you live in the south, you would trade for the cold. I’d rather live in Hawaii.

Cross country skis
I bought some this week and look forward to four more months of exploring the near northside of Chicago and beyond. Let it snow, let it snow let it snow.
You’ve gotta find something about winter you love; otherwise, you’ll go crazy.

I’ve recently moved out of the country and was feeling a bit homesick. Now that I see the weather, not so much!
What am I talking about? I MISS CHICAGO!!!!!!!!!!!!

i miss chicago AND the weather
give me good sound cold weather for a change instead of the warmcoldhotwarmcold patterns of the Tennessee Valley .. which keeps everyone sick as dogs here ..
For the first time I can recall since being exiled down here since 1986, this December has had a consistent pattern of cold weather — just like Chicago — every day for almost a week or so. And if it snows, it may actually STICK for a change here.
No matter the weather, though .. I’m a Chicago boy and dying to be home .. auuuugh ..
Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!
Bad Weather
Actually makes me miss the Midwest.
SNOW, SNOW and more SNOW
I have had to snow-blow our driveway out twice today …My wife say’s it will make me appreciate Mesa even more …Can’t wait for March .
That picture...
makes me want to move to Chicago NOW.
Luckily, I should be moving there within the next month or so.
Sometime around the mid-80's or so
The Tribune (I think) had a drawing of a bunch of snowmen standing in line to get into a snowy Wrigley Field. With the cold weather here in Iowa as well, I often think of that. I guess the snowmen would all be us.
You mean this one, I think.

Al,
Thanks for the clue of my Mom’s cryptic statement that there was only one thing she didn’t miss after she left Chicago.

Wait - Rogers Hornsby was sitting in McDonalds staring out the window at 2:00 this morning?
Closing the bars and got a case of the late night munchies? Attaboy Rogers!

Marathon welcomes Cub fans?
The marathon was 2 months ago. I know because my husband ran it and it’s my goal to run next year (who would have thought I’d go from barely able to walk 2 blocks to working on competing in a marathon!)

I’m guessing that’s a sponsor message from Marathon Oil.

Marathon
I was just finishing mapping out my plan to be ready for it when I clicked over here so it was on my brain.
In a year I’ve gone from not being able to walk more than a block or so without having to catch my breath to preparing for a marathon. I’m just excited about that.

Miss the city/people
NOT the weather. It was 70, sunny, and the birds were chirping as I left work. I was thinking, even after living in SoCal 20+ years…." birds….in December?" I thought it was spring.
I will never take this weather for granted, that’s for sure.

Weather and scenery..
…are the only good things left in Southern California; at least OC. It’s wayyyy too expensive to live here and there are too many freaking people. If we could only boot about 10 million people out of this state it wouls be paradise again!

True
Maybe the next earthquake will scare people away — or scare more from coming here. That, I guess, would be taking the good w/ the bad.

Good hockey weather
The picture makes me think of the upcoming hockey match at Wrigley. It would be awesome if a pounding snowstorm was going on.
That'd be festive and fun.
As long as it’s not a pounding RAINstorm.

The snow has come to Addison and Clark,
And Wrigley stands a dowager again.
Today no children crane their heads to hark,
No raucous crowd assembles, wishing "Win!"
No seventh-inning stretch is sung today,
The organ and the PA both are still.
The rooftops all are empty ‘cross the way,
Their only occupants the wind and chill.
Upon the airwaves, too, a silence screams,
No "Holy Cow!" or "Hey, Hey!" warms the ear.
The sports page fills itself with other teams,
And shifts its focus far away from here.
No vendors hawk their wares along the street,
No crowds debark the Red Line dressed in blue.
No jerseyed diehards gather here to meet,
No old men fondly whisper, "Let’s play two!"
The scoreboard, lonely, silent sentry keeps
Above this fabled jewel box kissed with snow.
But somewhere deep beneath the bricks there sleeps
A bear Cub’s soul, which waits to wake and grow.
Oh, winter adds to hunger, hard to sate,
For winning gonfalons, or e’en a ring.
But for the chance to cheer our team we wait
Until the ivy blooms again next spring.

zno .. dude .. that was ART ..
like Keillor channelling Sandberg, Carl that is, drawing on Turkel
You got me when I read about Wrigley being a dowager once more .. THAT is a word I’d never have associated with the Friendly Confines before I read this .. but you hit a grand slam with that “gonfalons” chunk of meter ..
Now for the test:
go to the next slam at Weeds .. see how it plays
You might see my brother, the Chicano poet who hasn’t spoken to me in several years who floats in and out there … he long ago gave up on the Cubs and after this season, another of my four brothers just formally announced his disconnect from any fanship with them.
If you see John Martinez, tell him his older brother loves him and that I hope to see his son at Ft Bragg stay with us for Christmas here in the buckle of the Bible belt … Actually, I’m just being dramatic … I don’t expect you to be an inbox for me.
Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!
If I weren't in Des Moines, I'd be there.
That’s a bit of a drive, though, particularly this time of year.

Is there a guide that explains how to include images in your comments?
I don’t see that option in the formatting guide.
Click on the little icon that looks like a tree.
A window should pop up allowing you to put an image URL in it. You will have to allow popups from sbnation.com if you haven’t already done so, but you should only have to do that once.
Hope this helps.

Al tomorrow through Thursday could be huge news days obviously. Winter meetings with possible moves by the Cubs, Kerry could sign somewhere else, Santo and the HOF are you preparing for little sleep?

I don't get much sleep now.
This busy baseball week won’t make much difference.

Is it pricey to make the trip to Cooperstown on Induction weekend?
I’m just coming from Pittsburgh.

It'll be pricey to get a hotel room, yes.
And if Santo and Dawson both get in, don’t expect to find one within 50 miles.

I enjoy the P.R. Winter League in December.
Too bad you have to wake up to shovel snow and scrape ice from the car’s windshield, Al. That’s the part of living in cold latitudes that I dislike the most.
To me, it’s baseball year round. Right now, it’s 11:44 P.M. in San Juan, 72 degrees.. Tomorrow we’ll have a high of 85 and a low of 75, a 40% chance of rain and the baseball tournament will resume on Tuesday. (Interleague games against teams from the Dominican Republic ended today.)
Our high was 15 today
Tomorrow night/ tuesday we are to get our first major snow storm. 6- 9 inches when it’s all said and done.

I wouldn't mind some of that weather here...
Got to admit it looks cold there, and here in Kuwait it’s been in the 70’s for highs. But after this summer, man I wish I had some of that cold! We were pushing 115-120 daily. Just leaving your room, walking to the chow hall and then to my building where I work is less then 200 yards total, but by the end, I would be drenched. Even now it would be nice to get some rain/snow to break up the monotony over here. It’s the same, every day.
Oh, just saw on MSNBC that the Tribune Corporation, parent company of the Chicago Tribune, is hiring lawyers and a banking firm ahead of possible bankruptcy filings later this year. Al, care to comment on what ramifications this might have on the cubs? Could this delay the sale even more?
I don't think any of us knows yet.
There’s some discussion going on in this fanpost.

Love the snow!
Already took the kids snow boarding twice this season.
It’s the sub-zero air temps that bother me. And that often follows a big snow here. Yeah we’ve had some snow a little early and yeah I’ve had to put my fun car away for the winter, but we can get all the snow possible (beating the ’78 / ’79 record if possible; all you other locals remember that one, eh) but staying above zero would help.
On the flip side, Feb 26th isn’t that far off when I make my 1st trip to AZ for ST.
Sweet Lou for Mayor in '11.
I don't remember it much
But ‘78 is when my family made the trek from frankfurt to New Mexico. Funny how when we got out there, the winter of ’78 was one of the coldest in NM history as well. Here I was in New Mexico wearing the same snow suit I had to wear in Frankfurt. I haven’t been back since. Would love to get back though, maybe combine that with my first game at wrigley. That’d be one heckuva trip
