2008 Winter Meetings Thread!!
Thought I would start a 2008 winter meetings thread in lue of tomorrow. maybe we can use this for all transactions and gossip. Just read tonight that there has been a possible trade involving the Reds and White Sux. Reds getting Jermaine Dye and the the White Sux receiving Homer Bailey. If so I gotta believe Kenny Williams clearly won this deal with the addition of a young stud caliber pitcher under control until 2013.
As far as the Cubs go Cubs.com has a preview in which you can read here!
Hopefully tommorrow's a big day for us with Ronnie Santo going into the Hall of fame and us finally getting our LH Outfielder whomever that may be. After that I believe the pieces will start to fall into place. Good Luck Jim Hendry make us proud!

Big week
Big week possibly coming up.
Feel for Al and anyone else running a fansite for a baseball team this week as there could be headaches galore.
I think we can be trusted to not give Al an ulcer this week.

Just kidding. :) I’m a newbie, so I’m pretty sure I don’t have that right. But about that Jake Peavy…

WGN will have the news on Santo first. I was listening to them this weekend and Santo will call the office when he hears and Kaplan will break in.
I think the tone of Dave’s voice from word 1 will tell us.

Bailey for Dye
Thank you Cincinnati Reds. My biggest concern was the Cubs being challenged by the Reds and a very talented pitching staff. I was very worried about their young pitching and this removes one key. Dye is a bad fielder and only going to get worse. The Sox really are stockpiling a lot of young talent and their staff has the potential to be very special in the next year or two.

Another
one of these 2008 moves that puzzle me badly. Why give up a good young, cheap, starter for over aged ,over priced not so good fielder. especially when there is about the same caliber player on the market in ibanez, abreu, and dunn for the almost the same money. this offseason may go down as the weirdest ever in my books.

If Bailey learns a curveball, he has the potential to be good
But thus far, he’s tried to rely on his fastball, with disastrous results. He needs an off-speed pitch to fully realize his potential.
If Don Cooper can do that, then Bailey for Dye is a great move on the Sox behalf.

Interesting quote from that article about budget and sale:
… The team has yet to pick its new owner, which could be finalized by Spring Training. The bidders are aware of the team’s 2009 budget. If Hendry wants to add significant money to the payroll, he will have to make room by trading players currently on the roster.
That sounds like Muskat’s source(s) think the final budget number is pretty much set and Jim is keeping it under wraps.
Also, no mention of Peavy after the first paragraph. Back burnered for a bat, by chance?

I wanted Dye for RF.
Unfortunately, he hits righthanded. Since Lou’s obsessed with a LH hitter, Dye doesn’t qualify.
It does puzzle me why the Reds want him, though. They can’t really think they’re contenders in 2009, can they?

The Reds...
… are the team that scares me most in the NL Central. If Arroyo and Harang bounce back that rotation is scary. Volquez is fantastic and they have other good young prospects. They have good young hitting and they could use a righty with some power.

I think the Reds are the big X factor in the 2009 NL Central race.
I think it really depends on if the cardinals are improved and what kind of team the Brewers put together. With 6 teams, I think the NL Central plays differently than all of the other divisions so it will be interesting to see how things shake out.

Reading Gordo and others
it sounds like Peavy would not happen until the lefty bat is here and Marquis is gone.
But according to this Orioles beat writer, the buzz in the lobby last night was that the Peavy deal would be completed today.
I’ll take that morsel with a grain of salt…
My next sig line quote will also be from Lou Piniella, and the first word will be either "Look", or "Listen", followed by a comma.

That's the biggest problem with the Winter Meetings
Too much salt needed.
Anyway, I’m wondering if one of the hold-ups on Peavy, is not $ concerns as much as Gordo’s view that the Cubs want Hermida and they don’t think they can trade for both. I would be very glad if Hermida was the top RF target.

surprisingly nothing big happening
I deduce that the finances are prevalent, that all the GM’s know that talent is now less desired in their jobs going forward and survival and viability are.
With the venerable Chi Tribune Co now facing bankruptcy along with GM and Chrysler this is just the tip of the sponsoring nightmare. The Beer Industry by itself can’t support the market.
That all said I think it is interesting to note that the Peavy trade is one of the lynchpins, where Cubs have knowledge of many supposed 3rd team clubs—-(TB, Balt, Sea, MN?)

Can anyone tell me about...
Eric Hinske? A FA RF with some time at 1st and 3rd. LH looks like a little pop… actually drafted by the Cubs I believe. I don’t know, seems like he might be an option. Certainly not as sexy as a Dunn or Abreu signing might seem, but might be a comparable to a Hermida (my favorite choice so far) or Teahen trade. While numbers aren’t great, he couldnt cost that much – or could he? Thoughts and oh yeah, be kind.
by socalicubsfan on Dec 8, 2008 9:26 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
Looking at his Fangraphs page, (which as of yesterday is the best thing about the Internet) he’s projected to be a league-average hitter with below-average 3B and above average RF defense. Probably not a bad player but not the sort the Cubs are looking at. The Cubs would apparently rather overpay for a guy who hits better and pisses away that advantage in the field.
by cwyers on Dec 8, 2008 9:54 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
While, statistically...
… his defense appears good, my impression of him is as a guy whose best position is DH.
He also has really alarming platoon splits (2008 numbers):
vs. RHP: .262/.344/.500
vs. LHP: .143/.263/.224
We really don’t need a platoon DH.

As far as conventions go, Indianapolis is one of the better cities in America in terms of hosting. However, I wouldn’t visit Indianapolis in the middle of December if I didn’t live here. For those that do come, there is plenty to do in the downtown area, so it’s not like everyone will be terribly bored.

You've got that backwards, Bren
Even though the Cubs have payroll issues as they wait for the naming of their next owner, a variety of sources indicate they’ve begun moving forward on acquiring a lefty-hitting corner outfielder. They’ve checked in on free agents Raul Ibanez, Bobby Abreu, Milton Bradley and Adam Dunn, although Bradley and Dunn rank much lower on their radar screen than Ibanez and Abreu.
The Cubs have also talked to the Marlins about Jeremy Hermida. But Florida is reluctant to move Hermida just for prospects, and the Cubs aren’t interested in trading players who would leave holes on their big league roster.

Oh - sorry, missed the post below.
To make up for it, I’ll add this happy (to Al, especially) news.
Joel Sherman says Peavy will be traded this week or start the season with the Pads (probably):
-Padres GM Kevin Towers said that if he does not complete a trade of Jake Peavy to the Cubs at these meetings, he will probably announce that he is keeping his ace to start the season.

hmmm the rumor mill is indicating Abreu and Peavy
So what kind of deal would Abreu want, $12M two years plus the Hendry option? I have heard that the Cubs are willing to move four players and includes something they don’t have for Peavy—-possibly a two player move that includes Marquis.
Interesting to see what comes out of this.

I HOPE Lou is kidding but I am not at all sure
An Article in Washington State papers’s blog says Lou ASKED reporters IF Ibanez could play RF and misprounounced his name and when asked about Putz seemed to indicate he might still want a closer but JJ was making too much.. So let’s see he needs to ASK if the guy he wants can field and might want a DIFFERENT closer than what we have going . Again just small talk but I firmly believe in the Lou was behind Wood’s being dumped conspiracy theory.

Lou has a horrendous habit of mispronouncing (or not remembering) names.
What makes mispronouncing Ibañez’s name (and other Latin players’ names) all the more baffling is that Lou is Hispanic and supposedly learned Spanish before English as a toddler. He still talks to most Latin players in Spanish. Methinks that mispronouncing players’ names is his way of showing his superiority.
As far as Ibañez’s OF ability, he is probably judging it based on whether someone was better or worse than him.

The Phillies have entered the fray for Jake Peavy
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8912072/LIVE:-Latest-updates-from-winter-meetings?CMP=OTC-K9B140813162&ATT=49
The World Series champion Phillies are active on at least two fronts. They have shown interest in Twins’ outfielder Delmon Young and also have emerged as a possible third team in the ongoing discussions between the Cubs and Padres regarding right-hander Jake Peavy.
The Padres like some of the Phillies’ young minor-league pitchers, major-league sources say, but the talks are only in the preliminary stages.
The Cubs continue to seek a landing spot for right-hander Jason Marquis, whose $9.875 million salary would need to be cleared to create payroll flexibility for the addition of a left-handed hitter and/or Peavy.
No Peavy deal will be completed until the Cubs’ new owner is decided, sources say. The new owner would need to approve the addition of Peavy, who is owed $63 million.
I bet the Phillies are targeting Josh Vitters in a 3-team deal.

same here
I’m a little surprised how easily people seem to throw out the idea of getting rid of DeRosa. I know you have to give some to get some, but I wouldn’t make a deal that forced me to give up someone so versatile, and who performed so well for us. The returm we’d get isn’t worth the cost.

Or it could be the reason why Lou has been hyping LBR for more ABs.
Methinks that they won’t be able to afford TNO or O-Dog if they get Peavy. Of course, that won’t stop the talk on BCB…
Just my guess: the Phils have coveted DeRo for at least two years. He is probably the only reason why they would get involved in the Peavy fray. Not sure who else might be involved since I don’t know the Phils’ system very well.

possible
side note, i’m not sure why the Phillies would be frustrated with Carlos when he improved in AA this year and was real good in AAA. (albeit, limited innings). I’m not sold that Carlos is anymore than a mid-rotation guy, although he has the upside to be more. I’m also not sold that Amaro is the type of guy that will sell the farm for another title, and he’s their best chip and their need for a 3rd baseman isn’t that great, and they potentially found a Burrell replacement in the John Mayberry/Greg Golson deal..

According to Yahoo's Jeff Passan
the lone holdup in this complicated trade is the Cubs moving Marquis. Ugh, this signing was horrible the second we did it and it looks even worse now. I really, really hope somebody wants to take this scrub. I don’t know why any team would want him though, maybe they somebody to eat innings.
by illini23 on Dec 9, 2008 8:40 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
This actually tells you how bad the market is.
A year ago, Hendry had no trouble getting the Tigers to take Jacque Jones by eating about 40% of the contract.
They are apparently willing to eat about the same percentage of Marquis’ deal — no takers.
"That's my opinion and if you don't like it, well, I have others." ~ Groucho Marx
by Al on Dec 10, 2008 7:52 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
as i've said all along
Marquis doesn’t have a market
he never had one…. because he can only pitch effectively in one league and in that league half the teams are significantly cutting payroll
the only teams that would make sense for Marquis would be: Mets, Phillies, Dodgers????
That’s 3 teams… that’s not a market
The whole part where the Marquis argument careens off the tracks is because people get to divided in different corners. There’s the “Marquis is an innings-eater, he’s the best 5th starter in baseball” group and there’s the “Marquis is terrible” group
The truth is Marquis is fine as a 5th starter, but he’s NOT fine making 10 million a year. If he made 4 million a year he’d be fine
this is what the Cubs are being forced to realize now that the mistake wasn’t in signing Marquis (necessarily), the mistake was giving him $7 Million annually for 3 years when no one else was bidding on him
If that deal was 3/15 it wouldn’t have been a problem
by DartmouthCubsFan on Dec 10, 2008 10:57 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
It's too early -- that's the problem.
The Dads need to complete the Peavy trade soon, or they risk having the Cubs go to plan B (Randy Johnson) and possibly trading DeRo to the Phils or Twins if they need salary relief. The Phils want an answer on DeRo before they sign a FA LF.
Since CC apparently agreed to terms today, the first-tier market should take shape within the next week. The second-tier market should be in place by Christmas. The third-tier market (including Marquis) doesn’t usually move until January.
Hendry is being smart by forcing Towers to take Marquis. That way, he can move on to sign a LHB knowing what his payroll figure is.
