Ron Santo Snubbed By Veterans Committee ... Again

The Hall of Fame Veterans Committee failed, once again, to acknowledge one of the top ten (at the very least) third basemen in baseball history by passing over Ron Santo for induction, in a vote announced on the Hall of Fame website today. Santo got 60.9% of the vote.

The VC did elect Joe Gordon, who was on the pre-1943 ballot (Santo was on a separate list of post-1943 players). Frankly, I didn't think there was anyone else on the list of eligible players for this vote as qualified as Santo, so I don't think the committee did its work well.

Santo said, on the retirement of his Cubs #10 on September 28, 2003, that "this is my Hall of Fame". Unfortunately, he'll probably have to settle for that.

This needs to stop

The process has been changed several times and all that happens is they continue to show the foolishness of it all. This isn’t even about Santo and whether you think he should be in. I don’t have a strong feeling. What I do think is that its a shame to put Santo through this over and over again. I am sure for the others on the ballot its the same. They just need to end the veterans committee concept and have players realize that after 15 years, if they don’t get in, thats the end of it.

the post-1942 Veterans Committee is all living HoF players

and there’s currently 64 of them.

Kinda harsh to say this but it would appear that the only way Ronnie gets in is if some of the “No” HoFers get “taken out of the game”, so to speak. And Ryno keeps lobbying the newly elected members.

If Ronnie can stick around for five more years, he’ll have at least one more “yes” vote.

Joe Gordon

Gordon did lose two seasons of his career because of World War II. That kept his career numbers down. He may very well may be deserving. Both Santo and Gordon were nine-time All-Stars. The big difference between the two is Gordon played in 6 World Series and on 5 winners, and Santo never made it to postseason.

Gordon Had Better Teammates

The list includes Joe DiMaggio, Bill Dickey, Lou Gehrig (right before he contracted ALS), Red Ruffing, Lefty Gomez, Lou Boudreau, Larry Doby, Bob Lemon, and Bob Feller, and Satchel Paige (finally getting a shot after integration). Gehrig and Paige weren’t in their primes when they were playing with Gordon, but look at those other names.

Santo’s main HOF teammates were Banks, Williams, and Jenkins. Lou Brock wasn’t a HOF player with the Cubs. Robin Roberts was done by the time he got to Chicago. Goose Gossage had not yet established himself as a premier closer when he played with Santo on the southside in 1974.

Gordon belongs in HOF

When Gordon retired he was the all-time HR leader among second baseman, and would have had more HR had he not missed those two seasons during WWII. Also, as Bill James pointed out in his book Whatever Happened to the Hall of Fame, Gordon spent his prime years in Yankee Stadium, which probably cost him more HR, as Yankee Stadium was a tough park for right-handed hitters.

I’m not saying Santo doesn’t belong (in fact, James, in the same book, said Santo would be the first player he’d vote for if he had a vote), but Gordon was not a bad pick.

by Jody Jody Davis on Dec 8, 2008 12:44 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Don't Disagree

Gordon had some HOF credentials. Those home run totals for a 2B back then are impressive. It’s too bad this honor had to come thirty years after he died. Playing his home games in Yankee Stadium might have hurt his statistics, but the high profile and success of the franchise helped his image. The Indians had good teams later on his career. Bob Feller is still alive. Maybe, Feller can say a few words about Gordon at the induction.

The whole concept is flawed.

You can argue one way or the other about Santo’s qualifications for the Hall, but the simple fact is that the whole notion of election by current members is inherently flawed. As others have suggested many in that electorate have (in their minds) a vested interest in keeping other people out so as to preserve the exclusivity of their little club. The voting for the veterans needs to be taken out of the hands of the Hall members otherwise you might just as well eliminate it entirely.

Something needs to change FAST! This is completely unacceptable that someone who clearly has the individual numbers to warrant the HOF continually cannot make it in to the “club”. I am so tired of hearing the “to many players from that team that did not make the world series” arguement. .that has nothing to do with the individual performance. Results:

Results of the 2008 Post-1942 Players Ballot (48 votes needed for election)

Santo (39 votes, 60.9 percent), Jim Kaat (38, 59.4 percent), Tony Oliva (33, 51.6 percent), Gil Hodges (28, 43.8 percent), Joe Torre (19, 29.7 percent), Maury Wills (15, 23.4 percent), Luis Tiant (13, 20.3 percent), Vada Pinson (12, 18.8 percent), Al Oliver (nine, 14.1 percent), Dick Allen (seven, 10.9 percent).

I find it hard to believe Jim Kaat got as many votes as Santo. I mean, besides longevity, and that string of gold gloves, Kaat shouldn’t even be considered ahead of any of those others, except maybe Maury Wills.

I think Kaat has a good case.

He’s a 3-time 20-game winner, twice after having to reinvent himself after an injury. He played in four postseasons, in two World Series, and after his starting days were over became an effective reliever for quite a number of years.

He’s the best-fielding pitcher in history not named Maddux, having won 16 Gold Gloves.

I wouldn’t put him in ahead of Santo, but he’s got a better case as a player than anyone else on that list, IMO.

even close. Most current members don’t seem to have a problem with this, but I think these two are real oversights.

I see there were three occasions in 1969 with Minnesota and 1977-78 with Philadelphia that his team made the postseason, but he didn’t pitch. He was almost 44 years old, when the Cardinals won the World Series in 1982. Before Jamie Moyer, who was pushing 46, when he got his first World Series title, I believe Jim Kaat was the oldest player to play on his first world championship team.

Well....

1. Never won a Cy Young Award
2. 3 time 20 win seasons out of…..25?
3. You and I both know that the Gold Gloves were given out to a lot of players in the 60’s-70’s based on whether they had won it before and reputation, not soley the season they had. His career fielding % was only .947 (compared to Maddux’ .970)
4. I’d hardly call him an effective reliever. His last 8 seasons his lowest ERA was 3.40 and as high as 5.39, with most seasons in the 4’s.

I’d vote Oliva or Hodges before him. Maybe even Al Oliver.

I could research it, but....

….I would probably wager that there were more consecutive winners in the 60/70’s than there are today. In saying that, players like Mark Belanger and Bill Mazerowski were the best at their position, but did they actually have the best fielding percentage for that year? Ozzie Smith comes to mind as someone who won a GG or two even though he wasn’t necessarily the best SS THAT particular year.

But I always thought the GG awards were a crock anyway…..it’s based on the most “superior individual fielding performance” at each position, which is pretty objective.

Coming close repeatedly blurs and distorts the distinction. The Cubs haven’t won a WS because they have not simply been good enough. Ronnie, by any objective measure, as the best 3B in the NL in his era, certainly was more than good enough to be in the HOF.

Not Quite Sure What to Think

Santo was before my time, so Im not as up in arms as some older Cubs fans. However, I will say that the Hall of Fame should be an elite group. Whether or not that includes Santo, I cant say. I think he’s being overshadowed by the elite 3B we’ve seen the past 20 years or so from Brett and Schmidt to Chipper and Arod

So 2011 will be the next VC vote, seeing as he lost votes between the 07 and 09 elections, Im not so sure what will happen.

Believe in Yankee Bias

I believe Mussina will make it to the Hall because he pitched a large portion of his career with the Yankees. Joe Gordon, who was elected today, played the majority of his career with the New York American League ballclub. I’m trying to think of any borderline candidate that spent significant time with the Yankees that didn’t make it. Phil Rizzuto made it after a long wait. Goose Gossage finally got in. Even Catfish Hunter, who had his best years in Oakland, was helped by being with the Yankees.

i’m grasping at straws, but the most borderline “Yankee” candidate that has been denied is Don Mattingly. He didn’t play in any World Series with New York. He didn’t keep up his greatness long enough to be a serious candidate anyway. Maybe, David Cone could be mentioned. However, Cone had a 20-win season with the Mets, won a World Series with the Blue Jays, and won a Cy Young with the Royals. He “only” won 64 games with the Yankees, fewer than the 80 he won with the Mets. Can he really be thought of as a borderline candidate or as a Yankee?

"The big possum walks late." - Harry Caray

by memphiscub on Dec 8, 2008 4:12 PM CST up reply actions   0 recs

Yankee Bias - Allie Reynolds

Reynolds is another borderline candidate who spent a good chunk of his career with the Yankees but hasn’t gotten in yet. He finished second behind Gordon in the vote this year (in a strange coincidence, they were traded for each other). I hope they don’t put him in before Santo

I wouldn’t consider Mussina (270 wins) and Gossage (over 300 saves, back when closers didn’t only pitch one inning at a time) “borderline” candidates. Rizzuto is the most obvious example of a guy who wouldn’t have even been considered by the HOF if he hadn’t been a Yankee.

I forgot about Allie Reynolds. He pitched on six world championship teams. I think his big drawback is only having one 20-win season.

Yeah, he finally got his only 20 win season as a Yankee,

…but I still think of Mussina as an Oriole.

Bal – 10 years (9 full), 147-78

I would definitely give him strong HoF consideration, and if he gets in, I’d say he’s wearing an Orioles cap.

If Tiant had played longer with the Yankees or Dewey had donned the pinstripes, I think they would have gotten more votes than they should have for the Hall. They are not Hall of Famers. I think if Rice had been a Yankee, he would be in the Hall now whether or not he actually deserves it. I don’t think being with the Red Sox helps in HOF voting.

How about looking at it like this:

Name 10 3Bman better than Santo.

It starts out easy, right?
Brooks Robinson, Mike Schmidt, George Brett . . . guess what — it gets tougher. In fact, you can’t do it.

So, tell me. In 189 seasons of Major League Baseball, shouldn’t the top 10 at each position be in the Hall of Fame? If the positions don’t matter as a criteria, you might as well call it the Hall of Famous Outfielders, First Basemen and Pitchers, because that’s where most of the stats are.

However, I’m going to stay positive, dammit! :)

I WILL take comfort in the fact that there is obviously a HUGE pro-Ronnie sentiment out there, and assume that he’s got to know we all exist and that hundreds of thousands of fans consider him in the HOF already, and the vote is just an evil technicality yet to be righted.

His name belongs in the Hall, and it’s not fair.

But at the very least, Ron, you need to know that you’ve got a whole (Cubbie) nation (and many, many more outside of it) on your side.

You’ll always be a legend, no matter where your picture hangs.

Copperstown NY

Doesn’t Santos hate NY?
Why would he want to have his legacy live there?
Hell, the HOF is over rated :)

I really thought

When I was invited to a bar mitzvah the weekend of the convention in Pittsburgh I thought “After going to 22 conventions the one I miss will be the one after a world series win and Santo getting into the Hall of Fame”

After the playoff loss I thought Okay so now I’ll miss the Santo party.

But it would have been worth it and I’m sure with updates here and youtube I would have not missed it really.

I am still so angry.

I just want my email box flooded from my friends all over the world after happy Cubs news.

I have talked about this so much my friend in Australia knows about it and emailed me this afternoon.

Listening to Hendry he is not happy about this. So I think Hendry should make some moves tomorrow to smooth our sad souls.

An idea

There are some equally vocal groups for Hodges and Rice. Maybe we can unite with them and work something together.

If a boycott or such by Dodgers, Cubs and Red Sox fans started maybe we can get something going.

I htink

He deserves to get in by his numbers, but he must have ticked off a lot of people during his career.

I was glad to see less “Poor Ron” campaining this year, that sure won’t do it.

Also, while passionate, he is the worst announcer I have ever listened to.

by Hamstring on Dec 8, 2008 8:23 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I agree...

…his numbers should get him in, but I think you raise a valid point on the “poor Ron” issue. Since Santo is in the spotlight as a colorman for the Cubs, I do think the constant talk about him on the air has done him no favors, and has turned people off. It has calmed down some since he failed to make it a couple of years ago, but I do think some damage has been done.

Here's a suggestion...

Make the VC accountable for their votes. Have their votes released and their reasoning for voting the way they did. If they have a valid point then they shouldn’t have anything to worry about right???

Ron Santo Belongs in Cooperstown

is the one pin that I ALWAYS wear on any Cubs cap – ALWAYS!

Perhaps until now.

The VC members who did not vote for Ron Santo do not DESERVE to have the privilege of voting for ANYONE when they IGNORE the merit of Ron’s career.

Cooperstown as represented by the embittered and ignorant few VC voters, does not deserve Ron Santo!

Ron Santo Belongs in Chicago – in the hearts and souls of knowledgeable and admiring fans!

My new pin should read: Ron Santo, HOF (Hall of Fans!)

# 10 A REAL CUB.......

So sad that the HOF has snubbed Ronnie again …The numbers are there and everything he has done for the game ……We had planned to visit Cooperstown this summer not now no way …..

Committe just can't take a hint

santo is pretty much the face of the cubs nation almost like harry caray was. one would think those intagibles plus the stats would be HOF material but just like the one from above does, the commitee does, and that’s overlook cubs nation.

The Saddest Part

The worst part of all of this, is that as soon as Ron passes away, there will be enough of a sympathy swell to probably get him in. And what’s the point? Why not induct him now while he can still enjoy it?
It’s like Dennis Johnson w/ the Celtics— you don’t know what you had until it’s gone.
This system really doesn’t make sense. It’s a really sad day.

JMO

I think that Ron needs to change his tactics…

I’m not saying that this is “fair”, but I think he hurts his chances with the VC by essentially campaigning for election. I think that most HoFers think he is trying to “blackmail” them into voting for him by being so public about feeling that he should be in.

I think that Ron should stop talking about it publicly. If he’s asked, he could say something like: “It would be a great honor, but there have been many great players through the years. I’m just glad I had the chance to play in the major leagues.” Let Billy Williams, Ernie Banks, Ryne Sandburg, etc. do his campaigning for him. Then the VC might take a new look at his stats.

I just think that the VC doesn’t want to feel as though they have succumbed to the pressure put on by Ron and the fact that he has a public microphone. In fact, retiring from the broadcast booth might actually help in that regard.
