Rockies interested in Marquis? Marquis for Taveras?Baker?
The Rockies have internally discussed acquiring Jason Marquis from the Cubs.
Marquis for Willy Taveras might interest the Rockies if the Cubs were willing to eat some salary, but the Cubs would probably just as soon stick with Kosuke Fukudome and Reed Johnson as their center field combination. MLB.com mentions Jeff Baker as a possibility to be involved. However, if the Rockies want Marquis, it shouldn't cost major league talent.
I've always kind of liked Taveras. Would he work as a leadoff hitter? Would he goof up the CF platoon of Fukudome and Johnson? Jeff Baker can give some pop from 2B: 10 HR in 102 games last year. I imagine the Cubs would have to eat a lot of salary if this were to be feasable. Nice to see some interest in Marquis though...

Dear Santa:: All I want for X-mas this year is an official 2009 Jake Peavy Cubs Jersey. Oh and a Beimel one too. I've been a real good guy for the most part!!!

Any leadoff guy that
doesn’t know how to bunt (I clearly remember the ‘05 playoffs when he was with Houston) is a no go. That said, Soriano doesn’t bunt either. But wait! He’s not a leadoff hitter!!!

Baker
He wouldn’t be a bad return for Marquis if the Cubs didn’t need to send along any money. The only problem is he is right-handed so you figure he would take Cedeno’s spot but Baker doesn’t play SS. So if you had backup infielders of Fontenot and Baker, neither play SS.
I’ll pass on Taveras.
by rlpete on Dec 8, 2008 5:59 PM CST reply actions 0 recs
For the record,
Taveras had a .251/.308/.296/.604 line last season in a great hitters’ yard. That’s Ryan Theriot-like power from an OF. Marquis managed a .203/.242/.356/.598 line without having the advantage of playing every day. Wouldn’t it be simpler to just play Jason in CF? At least he bats LH and has a little power.
The only way I would be in favor of this trade is if the Rockies pick up 100% of Jason’s tab and the Cubs immediately non-tender Taveras.
Jeff Baker is primarily a corner-guy (1B, 3B, LF, RF), but can play 2B in a pinch. Having LBR and Baker as the backup IFs would force DeRo into the backup SS role (no big deal — he backs up every other position), but Baker has a nice bat.

Agreed on Baker's bat.
If we got Baker for Marquis, I’d really be surprised and pleased. Baker would fit the same role I imagine the Cubs were considering Rich Aurilia for and would be better than Aurilia in every way.

Not worthy of another thread, but Fox News "reports" that the Phillies "could possibly"
be the third team involved in a possible Peavy trade..

Well, that's three down, 25 to go until the "real" third team emerges...
I know that the Phils would love to have DeRo, but who else might interest them? And what do they have in the way of young pitching?

Ill take the glass half full approach here...
…and say that the Phillies would probably be interested in any of the following players: DeRosa, Marquis or Marshall.
I dont know who the Phillies would part with, but I could see something along these lines…
Cubs get Peavy
Padres get one of the Phillies 5 catchers (5 catchers on their 40 man roster! Eeek), Marshall, Pie, Cedeno and Guzman
Phillies get Marquis and Cash
The Padres might prefer Wellington Castillo but who knows.

If the Phillies are involved, DeRo is at the top of their list.
They tried to sign him in 2006, and I think were in line to trade for him if TTTSNBN had gone through. Also, Chase Utley will miss the first two months of 2009.
They might also have some interest in Reed Johnson if they decide to use a platoon in LF. They have LHBs Matt Stairs, Geoff Jenkins, and Greg Dobbs.

He is arb-eligible, but not FA eligible...
RJ has 5+ years of service, so he is not a FA. Assuming that he is tendered a “qualifying” contract by the Dec. 12 deadline, he is property of the Cubs for 2009 — unless the Cubs decide to trade him.

if the cbssportsline thing is correct
and the target is JA Happ, well, put it this way, I hope we aren’t going to fork over Mark DeRosa for JA Happ without getting more in return. I like Happ somewhat, but value wise, it’d have to take more, and I don’t know if the Phillies have anything else that’s of value that I really want that can contribute to a win now club (as they aren’t likely to deal from their pen, and Victorino doesn’t seem likely either).

It is DeRo + every prospect in the system for Peavy. It’s just that Happ is a better pitcher than DeRo and that is what the Dads want.

I don't get
why Dero’s name is even out there. The guy is a great player for the Cubs. He is everything a team needs. Phils get him, what a steal. They will play Dero at 2nd until Utley gets back, then in the outfield, most likely left if they don’t sign Burrell,
Cubs don’t trade Dero.

This deal...
wouldn’t necessarily end the Cubs offseason. They could still be in the market for a SS (my preference) where Font and Theriot share 2B.
I think we’re fairly determined to acquire a LF, thus making Dero’s outfield abilities unnecessary.
It is a sacrifice, but I have a hard time passing on Peavy in favor of Dero.

Just a guess...
Assuming that the Cubs can’t get Hermida (and they don’t match up well with the Marlins), the required LHB RF will cost at least $8M (possibly $12M) in 2009.
The Cubs cannot afford such an expensive RF and Jake Peavy without dumping more salary than just Marquis. They can’t trade Harden, because they will be giving up Marshall and Marquis. DeRo is the only other Cub who makes significant coin who doesn’t have a NTC.
Get used to LBR…

$5.5M -- and the Phils would certainly take up the whole tab.
Based on my very unofficial calculations:
The Cubs’ 2009 payroll stands at about $136M (including arb guesses)
Peavy will cost $11.5M.
That leaves the Cubs at $147.5M
The most recent payroll estimate is $140M-$145M
Subtracting $6M of Marquis’ salary leaves them at $141.5M — and they still don’t have their LHB RF.
Subtracting DeRo’s $5.5M leaves them at $136M, which would give them about $8M for the RF.
