Blagojevich illegally offered state help for sale of Wrigley?
Among the many things Blago just got charged with, this one was kinda interesting:
"Blagojevich and Harris conspired to demand the firing of Chicago Tribune editorial board members responsible for editorials critical of Blagojevich in exchange for state help with the sale of Wrigley Field, the Chicago Cubs baseball stadium owned by Tribune Co."

Maybe we need to go out of state for a new senator.
(Oh, I guess we already tried that and it was a disaster, cough, Alen Keyes.)
It will sure be interesting to see how many other Illinois politicians are involved in this mess.

Ah, GRod.

Yes, yes ... winter is indeed a pond upon which all of us must skate, braving frostbite and runny noses in the hopes that our cars will start and we shan't embarass ourselves slipping on a patch of black ice. I understand that for Cub fans in prison in Illinois
they have an internal cable channel that only shows the six play-off games from the last two years in a constant loop. That is all that a Cub fan gets to watch in prison. That is why it is called prison. Truly appropriate punishment for the Governor it seems to me.

Blago
I read through the 15 or so pages of the complaint, which can be found in pages 41-55. Basically Blago and his chief of staff were in regular contact with folks at Trib Co, attempting to have Tribune Editor John McCormick fired. Blago was unhappy about the coverage of the Tribune which called for his impeachment and was not very complimentary towards the governor. The complaint details Blago’s use of the Illinois Sports Authority and his potential influence to have the Authority purchase the Cubs. Blago was using his influence regarding the sale of Wrigley field in an attempt to having editorial board members fired.
There is some mention that there was contact with both “Tribune Owner” (one would assume this means Sam Zell) and “Cubs Chairman” (one would assume that this is Crane Kenney). It does not seem that there really was wrong doing on the part of Zell or Kenney, but here is the segment of text referring to Kenney:
After hearing that Tribune Financial Advisor had assured HARRIS that the
Tribune would be downsizing or making personnel changes affecting the editorial board,
ROD BLAGOJEVICH had a series of conversations with representatives of the Chicago
Cubs regarding efforts to provide state financing for Wrigley Field. On November 30, 2008,
ROD BLAGOJEVICH spoke with Sports Consultant, the president of a Chicago-area sports
consulting firm, whose remarks during the conversation indicated that he was working with
the Cubs on matters involving Wrigley Field. In that conversation, ROD BLAGOJEVICH
and Sports Consultant discussed the importance of getting the IFA transaction approved at
the IFA’s December 2008 or January 2009 meeting, because ROD BLAGOJEVICH was contemplating leaving office in early January 2009 and ROD BLAGOJEVICH’s IFA
appointees would still be in place to approve the IFA deal. On December 3, 2008, ROD
BLAGOJEVICH spoke again with Sports Consultant and explained that ROD
BLAGOJEVICH had control over state funds designated for use in connection with science
and technology, and which could be used to pay for improvements at Wrigley Field. Later
that same day, ROD BLAGOJEVICH spoke with Cubs Chairman and said that he could
make state science and technology funds available to the Cubs without having to go through
the legislature, and suggested that the Cubs come up with proposals that would allow the use
of such funds.
This is certainly all Cubs newsworthy. Without commenting politically I will say that Blago sure didn’t show himself to be much of a Cubs fan here.

Yup...
… if you have a few minutes, read through these pages. Most ammusing might be the parts where Blago’s wife threw in her two cents.
During the call, ROD BLAGOJEVICH’s wife can be heard in the background telling ROD BLAGOJEVICH to tell Deputy Governor A "to hold up that fucking Cubs shit. . . fuck them."
and
Later, ROD BLAGOJEVICH’s wife got on the phone and, during the continuing discussion of the critical Tribune editorials, stated that Tribune Owner can "just fire" the writers because Tribune Owner owns the Tribune. ROD BLAGOJEVICH’s wife stated that if Tribune Owner’s papers were hurting his business, Tribune Owner would do something about the editorial board.
I feel bad for their children who likely are going to not only have the stigma of this guy as their father but are going to be visiting him for several years in a federal prison.

Well...
… a lawyer would be better to comment but while Blago’s wife put in her two cents, I think her lack of being an elected public official means that she’s just a bystander here. Certainly one with an opinion, but since she had no legal role in state decisions I wonder whether or not she legally did anything wrong.
On the other hand, if she is indictable, its likely that this will be held over Blago’s head. Fox Chicago is doing a great job covering this today and one of their commentators said that perhaps they’ll try to get Blago to plea guilty in an attempt to save his wife from being dragged into this.

#5
The only reason I felt like Pritzker was #5 or at least JJ Jr isn’t #5 is the amount of immediate money that #5 apparently was going to pony up immediately… I believe $500K and then $1M in further contributions. JJ Jr, I don’t believe, would have access to that kind of immediate cash. JJ Jr, I believe, has to know that Blago is toxic and anyone who was having those kinds of talks with Blago is almost as dumb as Blago.
It seems to me that the idea of a long term replacement for Obama has long since set sail. Blago knew that he had to instead put in a placeholder, someone who would not be in the field of Shakowsky, JJ Jr, Gutierrez and Duckworth, all of whom would fight it out in 2010 for the seat. The placeholder concept allows Blago to go outside the box and appoint someone not conventional (think Delaware, where Ted Kaufmann was appointed for two years). Someone no one was thinking of. Blago, of course, would be left to really auction off the seat to high dollar donors, corporate types.
The one thing contrary is that JJ Jr was mentioned at the end of last week and on Monday, but who knows.

Is it just me, or does nobody else think heat could come down on the president-elect as a result of this?
His name is in tons of the report, talking about potential payoffs to get his choice appointed to the vacant seat.
Granted it’s his advisors talking directly, but it’s only one step removed and I could see some serious flak coming his way for this.
I have doubts that he’s 100% clean in this himself.

If you've got the time...
… I strongly suggest reading the complaint filed in US Court. It is about 75 pages but its double/triple spaced and probably takes about an hour to read. The highlights are the last 30 pages or so which detail the involvement of Blago with the Wrigley Field sale as well as Blago’s efforts to sell Obama’s senate seat to the highest bidder. Thats about a 20 minute read.
It shows a lot of things. One is what happens to politicians in power who seem to lose all touch to reality. This is not a Dem thing or a Rep thing, it just seems that far too many well intentioned politicians get into the position and them really lose all perspective. The complaint shows that Blago is
- Corrupt
- Brazen
- Dumb
Blago may not have known that he was being recorded and if he didn’t then he’s just stupid for not even considering that he needed to be more careful. I, on the other hand, believe that Blago knew that he might have been listened to and even with the walls falling in around him was as egregious as ever. For this man to think that all he had to do was appoint himself to the senate, restore his image and then be able to run for President is amongst the most inane things I have ever heard.
As a political wonk who has worked on campaigns this saddens me and even though I am a lifetime Illinoisan I am surprised. We need to demand more from our politicians and I hope that this day can be a turning point to changing how things happen in the state that many of us call home.

Dumber than a box of rocks
I read the complaint and accompanying affidavit over my lunch hour. Your Governor Blagojevich takes the Ted Stevens Prize for Dumbest Conduct by an Elected Official. His buddies are going down all around him and he still attempts to extort money from his office telephone. Even the Daley Machine at its worst – and its worst was pretty dreadful – was smarter than that.
But what infuriates me is that good projects – Children’s Memorial Hospital, for example – were sacrificed or jeopardized by this stooge’s greed. Sam Zell can handle himself; the IFA subsidizing bailing Zell out of Wrigley Field was a fairly dubious idea in the first place. I hate that the Cubs’ get dragged into the mess, though.
Alaska is still suffering through this kind of mess (8 convictions, two trials still pending, more indictments possible). It’s a horrible distraction from all of the very serious issues facing our country. So my sympathies to folks in Illinois. Shades of Big Jim Thompson. Good luck.

also unfortnate...
I was reading Blago’s Wikipedia profile and he certainly came from humble beginnings.
From Wikipedia:
Blagojevich was born and raised in Chicago’s northwest side, the second of two children. His father, Radisa Blagojevich, was an immigrant steel plant laborer from Serbia.9 Blagojevich spent much of his childhood working odd jobs to help the family pay its bills. He was a shoeshiner and pizza delivery boy before working at a meat packing plant.9 In order to afford college, Blagojevich worked for the Trans-Alaskan Pipeline System as a dishwasher.9
Everyone is different and many people who struggle to work their way up do a ton of good but perhaps Blago, once he started receiving riches, nothing could satisfy him. Indeed, it does seem now that even the good that he did was veiled in is deceit. Blago did often fight for those in need but unfortunately even the best of his deeds now need to be questioned and examined. Who knows what lies below the surface.
This has to be a very conflicting day for Alderman Richard Mell, father of Patty Blagojevich. He worked to get Blago elected and not long after they had a falling out. One now has to assume that Mell was privy to what a scumbag his son-in-law had become. Today Mell was quoted as saying that he was just concerned about his daughter and grandchildren.

What bewilders me is how Blago became so corrupt after having to overcome relative poverty and knowing what hard work is.

Last February Chicago Magazine
ran a profile of Blago that quoted a pol as saying the moment Blago got elected he changed, kind of like a flipped switch. Apparently the story he told himself is not the story of reality. Other pols called him a sociopath. Who knows?
What is irrefutable though is his approval rating: 4%. Lowest of any politician in the country.

1. This is insane. Really Blago????
2. Appearently the Whistle Blower was Rahm Emanuel ( I am assuming that his camp was upset that they couldnt pick the seat and he alerted people that these shenanigans was going on)
3.The Prosecutors quote “If Illinois isnt the most corrupt state, it is one helluva competitor” made me lol
4. Really Blago??? It amazes me how stupid people can be (why would he talk about that on the phone)
5. I agree with Rod that a senate seat is very valuable.
6. He needs to resign before he gets impeached.
7. The people should elect his successor (It would BS in the wake of this if someone like Jesse Jr. or Jan Schakowsky was able to waltz in)
8. Just unbelievable
9. The Cubs stuff is what really bothers me the most becuase part of me thinks we could have had our ownership situation resolved if he wasnt being a corrupt ass.

the law...
… is the law, and at this moment the law in many states dictate that the replacement for politicans who leave their current office be made by appointment or succession. So saying that someone like Jackson or Schakwosky waltzing in would be BS ignores that many many states do things this way. The fact of the matter is if Blago appoints anyone it will serve as a major scar. This is why Emil Jones was thought to be the replacement, he’d be a two year placeholder until the 2010 election.
Durbin has been public in advocating for a special election which it appears the State Assembly will meet on Monday to put in motion. If that does indeed happen look for Blago to certainly not sign it and sit on it for 60 days. In that time he’ll probably appoint someone who the US Senate will refuse to sit. If somehow this special election law happens it will then require primary elections and a general election. This will take months and months.
It amazes me that there is no provision in state law to have a Governor who is under investigation to be temporarily removed from office while his case is settled.

The problem with temporary removal...
Is the risk of politically motivated investigations as a tactic. On the national level, you can think of the number of investigations of both Clinton and Bush that had no basis (though some were warranted, to be sure), or more recently on the state level, the various investigations of Gov. Palin that amounted to very little legally.
Forcing temporary removal makes those tactics far too appealing. (Most governors are likely under some form of investigation at the moment, mostly because it takes little evidence to require them) That would be my guess for why the system is as it is in most states.
The Illinois situation right now is the exception that proves the rule.

So, I fully understand what Illinois is going through right now. It never ceases to amaze me what greedy and corrupt persons can do with political power.

Why is this such a big story?
Corrupt Chicago politics is the normal way of doing things…

as crazy as this sounds...
… the abnormalness of this corruption was just baffling. Not that corruption is normal but this was just absurd, shocking and beyond belief. We all knew that this was coming but I cannot imagine that anyone on the outside could have imagined that it would have been this shocking. The brazenness, audacity and sheer stupidity… He knew he was being listened to but still did some of the most outlandish acts of corruption and honestly seems to think that he did nothing wrong.

Oh my lord...
…this is pretty stunning. Although we’re all aware of the political corruption that exists in Illinois, this is of a far greater magnitude than anything we’ve seen. It sounds as if the US attorney was stepping up their investigation into pay-to-play contracts (i.e., the Rezko stuff) and just stumbled onto the Senate seat auction and the extortion of the Tribune Company. That Blagojevich would attempt something so brazen, at a time when everybody knew he was “Public Official A” from the Rezko indictment, is utterly insane.
Now, the state legislature needs to impeach him as quickly as possible. If Blagojevich was crazy enough to do this in the first place, I’ll bet that he’s crazy enough to try and hang on as governor while awaiting trial. The special election idea seems like the best idea, simply because the appointment of anyone other than a placeholder will be questioned on it’s face, even if its Pat Quinn making the choice and not Rod. Still, the seat will be vacant as of 1/3 so there’s not really time to hold a special election without appointing a placeholder first. And who would the placeholder be?
Dawn Clark Netsch makes sense, or maybe Jim Edgar if they want to appoint a Republican for a few months as a goodwill gesture. I’ve heard Carol Moseley-Braun’s name mentioned but her own scandals will come back up if that option is actually scrutinized. Heck, even Chuck Percy’s name came up today and he’s older than Mr. Burns.
Perhaps Blago’s biggest mistake was in failing to appoint Pat Fitzgerald (the US attorney) to the senate seat…maybe he could’ve taken the pressure off himself but, then again, why would Blago throw away his golden ticket?

Edgar
this state has gone steadily down the craptoilet since Gentleman Jim left office.
If there is a special election there is talk Edgar might run for the seat.
I don’t think the 2 most likely 2010 candidates will run (Jesse Jackson Jr. on the dem Mark Kirk on the rep side)

Blagojevich
What amazes me is him not knowing he was being taped. this is like those baseball players who wrote personal checks for their steroid/HGH purchases.
I don’t know about you guys but when I make calls about bribes I clean my phones first and when I buy my illegal drugs I pay cash.
What is even more amazing is people are surprised by this. My dog knows how corrupt the guy is.
As far as Daley goes, the reason he is still mayor is sadly there has never been anyone even close to qualified to run against him. When Jesse Jackson Jr is probably the best possible choice that’s how low it is.
When the Cubs clinched in 03 I was right in front of him and Jackson Sr.

True punishment
I think its only appropriate if Blago is sitting in Prison or a jail cell come Oct. ‘09 while the Cubs are winning a World Series title. He’d go from sitting in the first row next to Crane Kenney watching the team in front of him to sitting in the prison rec room with his George Ryan and other white collar criminals watching on a 19 inch RCA.

To me where this is BCB related is the Cubs Ownership
…their attempt to sale the team and their relationship with their fans, many of whom are Illinois tax payers. I don’t doubt for a minute that the tribune owner would have done such a deal. taxpayers subsidize this B.S. to the tune of $100 million plus, and fans face higher prices. Simultaneously, the owner of your favorite baseball team could potentially participate in a plot to feed the fans and voters watered down coverage/propaganda regarding their elected officials. To me, the onwer of the Tribune is just as greedy as the governor, they were made for each other and this sort of “deal”. It’s totally BCB worthy.
