Greinke- Better option than Peavy?
Supposedly the Royals and Braves are working on some sort of a Francoeur-Greinke trade. I would have to think that it would take a much better offer than just Francoeur to net Greinke, but it seems to me that it would make more sense to try to work out a deal with the Royals for Greinke than with San Diego.
Greinke doesn't have the pedigree that Peavy has, but he had an outstanding year last year, and his talent has never been in question. My guess is that it would take about half of the prospects to net Greinke has it would to get Peavy. He's still under team control for two years, and will cost much less in dollars as well.

I'd be surprised if the Royals traded Greinke.
The Braves would definitely get the better of a Greinke/Francoeur trade.

Agreed.
Hell of an arm, but seems to have forgotten how to hit (Francoeur.)

Which is exactly...

Royals 2009 AL CENTRAL CHAMPS
Royals won’t trade Greinke or Meche
Why will they part with their NO 1 or 2!
Royals can be serious contenders in the shaky AL Central
Sox are rebuilding, Tigers are old, Indians can rebound, Twins can compete.

How can you compare the two?
Greinke should not even be mentioned in the same sentence as Peavy. Granted, I’m a bit biased because I live in San Diego, but I’m of the opinion that Peavy will be the best pitcher in the rotation if the Cubs manage to land him.

Yes but the question is, what happens if we dont' win in the next year or two?
DLee is old, Other holes will start to fill up. Cubs will have to start looking at options outside of the farm because…well…they have none left. Maybe Jake Fox can learn to pitch

It will take twice the number of prospects to land Greinke as Peavy,
precisely because he is younger and cheaper.
Greinke might be a better long-term option than Peavy, but it is likely that Peavy will be the better pitcher in 2009.
Also, the trade package would have to start with Soto, Marmol, Vitters, and DeRo — then get serious.

+1, although I...
…disagree on your Cubs package. That’s a bit much, just a little. But Greinke would be a better pick-up for the Cubs, no question. Greinke doesn’t have Peavy’s hardware—-yet. – TL

I wouldn't give that and them some for CC
let alone Greinke. It’d take less number (and quality) prospects to get Greinke than Peavy.
I agree he’d be a nice fit with the Cubs but no way in hell would the Cubs give up more to get him than Peavy and it’s a mathematical impossiblility they’d give up Geo, Marmol and DeRo for that guy.

Don't be so sure that Peavy will be cheaper
Look at Santana, Haren and Bedard last season. Santana was obviously the best pitcher and arguably got the worst package due to the dollars required to retain him. Good cheap pitching under club control is in high demand.
Personally this trade doesn’t make any sense for the Royals. They have outfielders including Crisp who they just acquired. Why would they get another unless there were numerous other players involved?

I poste this exact thought on a different thread.
Greinke isn’t a big name, but he was unreal last year and it’s not all that difficult to make a case for Greinke being the better acquisition. From a performance perspective, Greinke is only twenty-five and already has put together at least on outstanding full-season, not to mention in the AL and not in Petco. Peavy will also cost a lot more than Greinke. Make that a ton more than Greinke. If the prospect package for Greinke is similar or even slightly bigger than the one for Peavy I would think long and hard about going after Greinke.
by dakoose on Dec 9, 2008 11:33 AM CST reply actions 0 recs
And many many other teams
would be very interested if Greinke was on the market. Not going to happen.

Teams with much more to offer
The only reason we’re in on Peavy is because we’re literally their only option.
by Wreckard on Dec 9, 2008 11:57 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
The price for Greinke will be significantly higher than Peavy
He’s young, extremely talented, and most importantly cheap.
I don’t think we could get him without trading one of Soto or Marmol.
by Wreckard on Dec 9, 2008 11:57 AM CST up reply actions 0 recs
Half the prospects?
I wouldnt be surprise if it would take more, hes younger and far cheaper…..theyd be nuts to trade him for Francouer, thats a terrible deal for the Royals

…I really don’t want to move Zach, but Jeffy could give this team some leadership, a face of the franchise, and get this team what Alex Gordon has failed to do so far – produce. Not sure how I feel about letting Zach go, though.

Plus, Dayton Moore
knows Francoeur from their days with the Braves, which may be why he’s willing to make the trade.
As for Greinke off the field, would his social anxiety disorder hinder him in a major media market like Chicago? I’m just curious about that.

Social anxiety disorder
That is always my first thought whenever the thought of moving Grienke to a large market team. The kid is a great talent, but I think a GM would be mistaken not to elavulate his disorder before bringing him to a market like Chicago. I, admittedly, don’t know anything about the disorder, or being a MLB pitcher, but IMHO it should be something to consider.

I think his hype his rookie year was so big...
…and the fact that he grew up wanting to be a Brave contributed to his bigger-than-life image. Even so, he hasn’t panned out since that rookie year. I don’t think he’s the worst player in baseball at all, and for the shitty Royals, I could easily see him fitting right in the outfield. He has a good glove, seems to have his head on straight, but I am not sure if 2008’s season was the typical we can expect from him, or if 2007/2005 is more typical. He seems to have one above average season followed up by one horseshit one.

I didn't say star, I said face of the franchise.
Soria isn’t the face of the franchise. He was the all-star representative – and if he was in NYC or LA, he’d get the f-ing credit he deserves for such a great season – but he’s no way the face of the team. Gordon was drafted for that, but it hasn’t panned out. I’d argue the face of the team right now is the young pitching staff, no one man.
