Bold Predictions for 2008

While Al is giving us diaries on the main page to predict individual player performances and various Cub players will be giving us easy predictions of Cub success, I want to read some bolder and wider predictions for the 2008 season.  I'm putting my predictions below in order of likelihood, as in a very likely prediction would be "The AL will win the All-Star game," and a very unlikely prediction would be, "At season's end, Jack Cust will lead the Cubs in SBs."

Star-divide

My Bold Predictions
1.    Thanks to great seasons by Johnny Cueto and Jay Bruce, every major sports mag publishes a love-fest article on how Dusty Baker has learned to trust rookies and the Reds rookies have learned to value Dusty's experience.  Pull quote:  "Yeah, they're great players.  After Griff and Ryan and Hopp all went down, we didn't know what we'd do, but Brucie really stepped it up for us."

2.    Despite the fact that he ends the season with the lowest OBP among Cub regulars, Alfonso Soriano will be lauded as "the lead-off hitter the Cubs needed and expected when they signed him to a multi-million dollar contract," thanks to a resurgent 30-HR-30-SB season.

3.    Of the players traded to Baltimore for Brian Roberts, the only one Cub fans regret trading is Ronny Cedeno.

4.    No one notices but KC Royal Matt Murton puts up an OPS a handful of points higher than Rookie of the Year, Kosuke Fukudome.

5.    The Pirates finish ahead of the Cardinals; the Reds finish ahead of the Brewers.

6.    Among the new closers in the NL Central (Gagne, Cordero, Valverde), it is Kerry Wood who gets the most saves and the only one who avoids the DL.

7.    Over the course of the 20 games that both Pujols and Glaus are simultaneously on the DL, the Cardinals winning percentage will be below .250.

8.    NLCS Game 6: Winning Pitcher: Mark Prior; Losing Pitcher: Kerry Wood

9.    NLCS 18 inning Game 7: Winning Pitcher: Ryan Dempster; Losing Pitcher: Trevor Hoffman, Save: Jose Ceda

10.    On June 24, in a crazy 15 inning game after which Henry Blanco and Daryl Ward are both put on the DL, Carlos Marmol hitting as the emergency-emergency catcher, slaps a game winning single that goes between Eric Patterson's legs.

i like the post a lot
i'll say this for my own bold predictions, the one i am most confident in is this:
  1. No matter how the Reds do Dusty Baker will receive all of the blame and zero of the credit on this board
  2. No matter how the Cubs do Lou Pineilla will receive all of the credit and zero of the blame on this board
some other ones just for kicks (no particular order):
  1. Rich Hill will be the pitcher Cubs fans feel the safest with out on the mound
  2. Bob Howry will lead the team in saves
  3. Adam Harben's name will get back on the prospect radar
  4. Sam Fuld will be putting up a middling .285-.370-.390 line in AAA for most of the season
  5. Felix Pie will take significant steps forward and become a Curtis Granderson type player, unfortunately just the 05,06 version and not the 07 version

by DartmouthCubsFan on Feb 14, 2008 2:11 PM CST reply actions

I'd be VERY happy...
... if Pie had a 2008 equivalent to Granderson's 2006. So would you, I'd think.

by Al Yellon on Feb 14, 2008 2:24 PM CST up reply actions

i'd be happy
but i'm actually expecting a little bit more from him than Granderson's 2006, which was .260/.335/.438

i think Pie can be a bit more proficient in the power department, get a little bump there (a lot due to park and league effects)

but yes, i don't see a reason why Pie (who was better than Granderson in the minors) can't be at least what Granderson was his first 1.5 full seasons at the big league level

and if he does take that step he'll be a big reason why we'll be much improved offensively next year

by DartmouthCubsFan on Feb 14, 2008 2:29 PM CST up reply actions

Agreed...
... further, he should steal more bases than Granderson did in 2006, too.

The only
thing I would compare this coming season for Pie to Grandersons last season would be the 140+ strikeout possibilty.

WOW, would I love for 23 bombs and 23 triples, 23 triples!!!!!! Thats how you get the OPS up.

Predictions
The NL Central race will be a dogfight until the end between the Cubs, Brewers and Reds.

Alfonso Soriano is team MVP and has a monster year at the plate but no longer steal bases or run with aplomb for fear of leg injury.

Rich Hill has a breakout season.

Carlos Zambrano wins 20 games.

Carlos Marmol settles into the role of dominant set-up man.

Kerry Wood and Bob Howry have 40 saves between them.

Kosuke delivers in every dimension of the game and becomes most popular Cub.

Geovany Soto does a nice job behind the plate and at bat.

Derrek Lee has a poor year and the wrist is no longer the excuse.

Ryan Theriot is replaced in the lineup by June 1st.

Ronny Cedeno tries and fails.

Jack Wilson becomes a Cub and does a great job.

Felix Pie is sent down to Triple A by the All-Star break.

Sam Fuld grabs 300 at bats and contributes nicely.

by MDBNIU on Feb 14, 2008 2:50 PM CST reply actions

No Way
Does Fuld even get close to 300 ABs. He'll be lucky to get 100 ABs

by sheamcmurray on Feb 14, 2008 3:11 PM CST up reply actions

Fuld will be lucky to get 6 at bats...
....oh wait, thats what he already has?  So why are we talking about him again?

Predictions
Hill DOMINATES

but, Zambrano comes back and wins the Cy Young

Soto is rookie of the year and hit over 25 homeruns

Fukudome hits about 285 and 12 homeruns

Last 3 innings go Marmol, Howry, Wood

Dempster is has a legit season and wins 15 games and 200 IP

Marquis gets dropped from the rotation

Lastly, and most importantly, the Cubs win the World Series.

by WUSTLCubsFan on Feb 14, 2008 3:13 PM CST reply actions

keep your predictions to yourself!!
why oh why would ryan dempster open his mouth and state that the cubs would win the world series this year!i hope he is right but i feel certain things are better left unsaid!let's keep our mouths closed and let our play do the talking!!

by cubz409 on Feb 14, 2008 3:37 PM CST reply actions

Predictions
Zambrano's ERA will be slightly better than last year, but he won't win as many games because of a trip to the DL.

Wood will dominate. He won't spend the whole season closing, but he will save several games. He will also have a brief trip on the DL, but nothing relating to his arm/shoulder. Hemorrhoids?

A major trade will take place after the season starts. It will include an All-Star and his name will not be Brian Roberts. This will be a trade with a team OTHER than the Baltimore Orioles.

A major brawl will erupt at some point during a Cubs-Cardinals game. Record length suspensions will be issued, particularly to Ryan Theriot and Albert Pujols. ESPN will be showing Theriot's powerbomb ("THE RIOT-BOMB" as it will be historically called) for years. The government will then send George Mitchell to investigate the levels of violence in baseball. Of course, steroids will be the blame.

Ryan Dempster, though only pitching past the eighth inning once, will pitch the first half like an all-star. He will be snubbed at the all-star game however, and will struggle with a tired arm in the second half.

Soto impresses behind the plate, but his bat will tire at the end of the season.

D-Lee will crank over 30 homers, but won't come near 40.

Jon Lieber will help carry the second half load.

Barry Bonds will beg the Cubs for a job, yet will get turned down. Expect Bonds to keep hanging around Wrigley, resulting in a UFC fight on Waveland. Sweet Lou vs Barry Bonds! Bonds will begin the fight dominating, but his overconfidence will get the best of him. After a severe beating, a red-faced Lou snaps and HULKs UP! Lou kicks Bond in the shin, and then does his best emulation of Ryan Theriots powerbomb on Pujols from earlier in the season. While Lou's won't look as impressive, it will still get the job done and the Bonds demon will be rebuked from Chicago, once and for all.

Carlos Marmol will once again dominate, but his ERA will be much higher. However, he'll be a star during the final weeks of the season. He will also lead the league in dents in the umpire's mask... as he repeatedly blows the ball past the catcher.

Soriano will hit over 40 homers, but will steal only 17 bases.

Fukudome will hit over .300 next season, but will struggle this year. He'll hit 11 homers this year.

Matt Murton will get a lot more playing time than expected.

It won't be handed to them, but the Cubs will win the division. They will fight their way through the playoff's, barely getting by, and will dominate Joe Girardi's New York Yankees in the World Series. After the final pitch, the camera man will get a close up of Girardi as a small tear rolls from his eye.

by JohnMan on Feb 14, 2008 4:05 PM CST reply actions

I think
as a Cubby guy, Girardi tear will be of joy.

Nice
I agree about Lieber - I came close to predicting he would be the Cubs 3rd best starter.

I totally agree with the Soto and Lee predictions.

I'm waiting for someome with exquisite photoshop skills to post a RIOT-Bomb picture for us.  If Theriot got off two RIOT-BOMBs - one against Pujols and one against LaRussa, would it get called the Ryan Theriot Game?

I wanted to predict a massive brawl between the Blue Jays and Cardinals (two teams whose managers can get crazy with retaliation) and was disappointed they don't play each other this year.

Does Murton get more playing time with the Cubs or some other team?

Dunn, Duncan, Lee, Bay, and now Braun... I hope the Cubs are practicing hitting to LF!

RiotBomb
Haha... I would love to see a picture of that also.

Murton - stays.

by JohnMan on Feb 14, 2008 4:54 PM CST up reply actions

Big Murt
So, are you expecting Murton to platoon with Pie with Fukudome playing CF against lefties or injuries or something else?
Dunn, Duncan, Lee, Bay, and now Braun... I hope the Cubs are practicing hitting to LF!

Of course
He won't be telling the (new)Boss that.... but indeed it will be. Indeed...

My Only Prediction...
... is that Zambrano will pitch the opening day game...

... ooh, the irony!  Poof!  http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20080214&content_id=2373336&vkey=spt2008new s&fext=.jsp&c_id=chc

Jacque Jones is gone and I doubt Ivan DeJesus would mind this!

by initram on Feb 14, 2008 5:02 PM CST reply actions

uh oh
I see that he is "leaner and trimmer."  I hope that doesn't mean his knee won't be able to hold up to a few post-strikeout bat-broken-over-the-leg incidents.

We should have a competition to predict how many Cubs will come to camp "leaner and trimmer."  I'm going to guess 40 (including Hendry).

Dunn, Duncan, Lee, Bay, and now Braun... I hope the Cubs are practicing hitting to LF!

by DGU on Feb 14, 2008 5:12 PM CST up reply actions

My Turn
I'm sure that these are bold predictions, but here's my take:
  1.  At least one of (Ryan Dempster, Jason Marquis) will be traded before Opening Day.
  2.  Matt Murton will be traded before Opening Day.
  3.  Sam Fuld will not be on the Opening Day roster unless Felix Pie is on the DL.
  4.  Ryan Theriot will have an OPS worse than last year's .672, and he will lose the starting SS job by June 15.
  5.  Mark DeRosa will have an OPS better than last year's .791, hit at least 14 HR, and will start at least 30 games at SS.
  6.  Kosuke Fukudome will start fewer than 10 games in CF, will hit fewer than 15 HR, will steal at least 20 bases, will have a .360 OBP, and will be batting #2 by June 1.
  7.  Carlos Zambrano and Ted Lilly will each win 20 games.
  8.  Jon Lieber will make fewer than 20 starts, and will win fewer than 10 games.
  9.  Ronny Cedeno will be given the SS job that Theriot loses, will outhit and outfield Theriot, but will make so many mental mistakes that he loses the job, either to DeRo or an import.
  10.  Alfonso Soriano will bat leadoff in at least half of the games he starts, will have a 30-30 season, will "only" have 75 RBI, and will have 20 OF assists.
  11.  Brian Roberts will not play for the Cubs in 2008.
  12.  Derrek Lee will have at least a .925 OPS.
  13.  Aramis Ramirez will have 2 separate DL stints, but will still hit at least 25 HR and 90 RBI.
  14.  Geovany Soto will steal at least one base -- off of Jason Kendall.
  15.  Kerry Wood won't visit the DL in 2008, but will not be able to pitch back-to-back enough to be named the closer.
  16.  Carlos Marmol will go through a rough stretch in May due to the fact that he pitched too much winter ball.
  17.  Ever-forgotten Daryle Ward will lead the NL in PH.
  18.  Donald Veal and Jeff Samardijza will both make their ML debut in 2008.

Circle gets the square
  1. Agree
  2. Agree
  3. Agree
  4. Agree
  5. I don't think DeRo will play SS.  I hope I'm wrong.
  6. I think his OBP will be higher than that.
  7. May it be so according to your word.
  8. Disagree
  9. Possibly
  10. I'll up the ante - Soriano will bat leadoff at least 90% of the games he starts - even if Brian Roberts is a Cub.
  11. Disagree
  12. Agree
  13. Very likely but I'm hoping that this is the year he's totally healthy and explodes on the league.
  14. In the Cubs' first game against Jason Kendall - Lou will come out to throw second base in a tantrum and he will beat Kendall's throw to the bag.
  15. Kerry will throw back-to-back.  He's good.
  16. Marmol's fine, too.
  17. Disagree
  18. Agree. Veal becomes an important bullpen piece down the stretch.
Dunn, Duncan, Lee, Bay, and now Braun... I hope the Cubs are practicing hitting to LF!

by DGU on Feb 15, 2008 7:17 AM CST up reply actions

I'll keep it simple
the Cubs will win the NL pennant and will lose the WS.
