Muskat: 7 Starting Pitcher Candidates

In Carrie Muskat's latest article, she indicates that the Cubs have seven candidates for the starting rotation.

She quotes Lou Piniella, who says, "Obviously, you're going to have [Carlos] Zambrano out there and [Ted] Lilly and [Rich] Hill.

Muskat then names the other candidates, writing, "Ryan Dempster, Jason Marquis, Jon Lieber and Sean Marshall are competing for the remaining two openings."

My question: What about Sean Gallagher?  Does his omission as a starting pitcher candidate have any possible significance w/r/t potential trades, or am I reading too much into this when there a simpler explanation?

Here's the article in question:

Reading too much into it
I'm surprised he remembered that many of the candidates.

LOL!
Hysterical!
Jacque Jones is gone and I doubt Ivan DeJesus would mind this!

Kevin Hart, too...
... may be one of the candidates, though I think Lou likes him better as a reliever.

Re: Hart
Yes, I think Lou's indicated a few times he'd like to try Hart in the long man role.

Granted, it was a very small sample size, but in his callup at the end of last year, Hart looked excellent, especially his cutter.

Harben
IIRC, in a December article, Harben was included as well.

Lieber signed and will be our #4.  Marquis will be traded before camp breaks.  Dempster, Hart, Marshall and Gallagher should compete for #5.

I am still convinced that Marshall will be dealt, too.  Gallagher may very well be, too.

Did I put my response in the wrong diary?  Maybe it is better served in the "bold predictions" diary.  ;-)

According Arizona Phil
Who's a very respected Cubs blogger, said on another site that Gallagher was absent from the workouts yesterday.

re: According Arizona Phil

Do you know what this means...?! Yeah, I don't either.

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2008 Chicago Cubs starting outfield: Soriano-Pie-Fukudome. Let it be.

I thought I read here in another blog that the rotation was already set...

OK, what insight from our favourite cubs.com writer.
