2008 Community Projections: Mark DeRosa

I'm going to leave the Derrek Lee post up through the weekend, but let's also get started on Mark DeRosa.

DeRosa put up nearly identical numbers in his final season at Texas in 2006, and in his first Cub season in 2007, suggesting that he's a late bloomer and could probably have another similar season. But will the Cubs acquire, um, another second baseman, relegating DeRosa to "supersub" (read: part-time) status? Or will they stick with the guy who did a pretty good job in 2007, even while playing games at several positions?

I say he starts and ends the season as the starting 2B:

AB: 518
R: 70
H: 153
2B: 32
3B: 2
HR: 11
RBI: 67
BB: 50
SO: 100
AVG: .295
OBA: .357
SLG: .429

UPDATE [2008-2-19 13:02:19 by Al]: I have closed this thread. Final projection:
AB: 493
R: 69
H: 145
2B: 29
3B: 2
HR: 11
RBI: 69
BB: 53
SO: 89
AVG: .294
OBA: .333
SLG: .428

I won't deny that
DeRo has been a good supersub, but give him some props for being one hell of a guy and a huge team player. Leave that other prospective 2nd baseman out of the equation. give DeRo his chance to be a single postion player. I don't think he will disappoint.

he will be the starter
The Brian Roberts deal would cost us way to much (Jose Ceda or Felix Pie) and its not worth it

I like DeRo, and he seems to be a great teammate
though I do think Roberts  would be a more productive hitter.  My  projections are based on DeRo having a full time job, either at 2nd or SS.

DeRosa at 2B
Anyone but Neifi is fine with me! A post-steroid Roberts makes me nervous and DeRosa is fine. I like Theriot at short and trust what Lou sees in him.

I think the Brian Roberts trade rumors will motivate him enough to have this type of season. He'll be a little better than next season, but I do think he could easily go on decline due to his age

DeRo will get plenty of playing time
even if Roberts is traded for.  If Roberts stays in Baltimore, then someone that is lefty and speedy will still be brought in, even if it's Eric Patterson.  That's where all the Roberts-haters are completely off track.  Someone speedy and lefty is coming, so if it's not going to be the All Star, who do you want it to be?  Felipe Lopez?

Comfortable with his teammates and surroundings, and motivated to prove himself even further, he builds on his second season with the Cubs, essentially matching the numbers he put up for the Rangers in '06 with a little more power.

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2008 Chicago Cubs starting outfield: Soriano-Pie-Fukudome. Let it be.

An infrequent starter until Roberts gets hurt in late August.  Ends up being far more valuable than it looked like he would coming out of Spring Training.  Pulled Hamstring also cost him speed at the start of the year.
