Gallardo to miss 4 weeks

Will likely begin season on the DL.

http://blogs.jsonline.com/brewers/archive/2008/02/17/gallardo-to-miss-4-weeks-after-knee-surgery.asp x

Insert standard "I never wish injury on any opposing player, BUT..." comment. This is kind of good news for the Cubs, and bad news for anyone intending to draft him for their fantasy team (me).

Probably will only miss 1-2 starts at most, so not likely to have a huge impact on the season.

This comment was uncalled for.
  1. The Brewers are the Cubs' biggest division rival; thus how their pitching staff does IS of importance to Cubs fans
  2. Yovani Gallardo was one of the top rookie pitchers in the NL last year and was on target to be a top starter of any kind in the NL this year. It's a big blow to Milwaukee.
Please think more carefully before you make comments like this. IMO, this WAS diary worthy.

What a freaking jackass.
Nobody asked you to troll diaries, but if you really feel the need to do so, then you could at least troll diaries that really don't matter in regards to the Cubs.

I'm just going to assume you are one of those idiot cub fans that gives all the rest of us a bad name, and you must not really know anything about the Cubs or their division rivals, so let me fill you in.

Yovani Gallardo is, at worst, the 2nd best pitcher on the Brewers. That's assuming Ben Sheets stays healthy, which he never does, so Gallardo could easily be the ace of the Brewer pitching staff this year. He pitched outstanding last year, and if he had been up the whole year he would've received ROTY consideration.

And I doubt you're aware of this, but the Brewers were in first place for almost the whole season last year, and remain the Cubs toughest competition. They are the team that the Cubs will most likely be battling with for the division title. And you're telling me that an injury to one of their best pitchers is unrelated to the Cubs?

Wow.

You didn't think it was diary worthy?
Who the hell cares what you think? And we're gonna "dominate" the Brewers, and you care less about them? Exactly my point up above. Your a troll, and an idiot, and you make the rest of your fellow Cub fans look bad.

And what exactly is the point of saying "who the hell are you" on an internet message board? Have you achieved some exalted status here on bleedcubbieblue, that I should know who you are?

The final word on this issue.
Both of you are wrong. Namecalling is NOT permitted here. The first poster was wrong to say this wasn't diary worthy. The second one was wrong to call him names.

This WILL stop, NOW. I will not tolerate this here, period.

Thank you.

Oops sorry Al.
Read your comment after reading the horribly inappropriate and uninformed post by cubsluver.  My apologies to you for pushing this further.

I stand by my comment though.

There are ways to do this without namecalling. Let's try to find them.

Well
Yovani Gallardo is a stud in the making  This clearly is a set-back for the Brewers.  But they do have the depth of starting pitchers to weather his loss for a brief while.

by MDBNIU on Feb 17, 2008 8:31 PM CST reply actions

If
Gallardo really is out for a good 4 weeks and the brewers start the season without ben sheets (for whatever injury related problem) I think the cubs have a chance to take a real commanding lead the first half. and Gallardo is definitley a threat, the guys a pedro martinez in the making

The Brewers have pitching depth
People are too dismissive of Milwaukee's pitching.   By all indications Ben Sheets is healthy right now.   Yovani Gallardo is a superstar in the making.   Manny Parra is another high ceiling youngster developing in the wings.   David Bush is a younger version of Jeff Suppan, or in other words a 30 start innings eater.   Claudio Vargas is decent.  And Chris Capuano is still hanging around.

Their bullpen?   I think it is good enough to get the job done in the short-term.   What they did sure beats paying the ridiculous asking price of Francisco Cordero and Scott Linebrink.

by MDBNIU on Feb 17, 2008 9:08 PM CST up reply actions

I beg to differ.
If the Cubs had Dave Bush, we'd be dissing him like people here diss Dempster and Marquis. Capuano is horrid. Suppan is, at best, league average.

If Sheets is healthy they may be OK, but the bullpen is awful. Derrick Turnbow will never live up to what he did a couple of years ago, and the money they paid to Eric Gagne to close will make them wish they kept Cordero.

They'll win games because they have a great offense. But that pitching staff is frightening.

Respectfully disagree
I didn't say David Bush was great.   But he does have good stuff and reliably takes the ball and eats innings.   He's a decent back of the rotation guy.   I don't know Al, I think the Brewers (when healthy) have a better starting pitching situation versus the Cubs.   Sheets and Gallardo can be a dynamite one-two punch.   And if Manny Parra keeps progressing to go along with Bush, Suppan, Vargas on the back end of that rotation?!?

The bullpen?   The Brewers are obviously taking a risky approach.   But a much less risky approach versus handing over a ridiculous $45 million to the suspect Francisco Cordero and $19 million to a fading set-up man in Scott Linebrink.   Soloman Torres and Dave Riske are the two keys.   If they can get the job done is setup duty then I think the Brewers will have a good bullpen.  And remember, all of these guys (Gagne, Mota, Torres, Riske, Turnbow) are inked to one year deals so there is little to prevent Doug Melvin from going out and acquiring bullpen help during the season if he needs to.

by MDBNIU on Feb 17, 2008 9:25 PM CST up reply actions

Vargas is awful
I don't know how he won any games, really.  It seems like every time I watched him pitch, the opposition got about 10 baserunners in 6 innings.

They do have depth, though.

Against us
I feel like he always beat us though...could be mistaking him with another pitcher.  Yet in 2007 I felt like we lost as many games as possible against pitchers that had no business beating us.

by ak123 on Feb 17, 2008 11:42 PM CST up reply actions

I think it seems that way every year
and probably for every team -- because games like that stand out more than getting beat by someone like Sheets, Webb, etc.  Those aren't as much of a surprise - or as annoying!

by Shanghai Badger on Feb 18, 2008 12:00 AM CST up reply actions

Sure..
you could make a good case for Capuano's terrible season, but I recall him owning the Cubs in 2006 like it was nobody's business. i think he threw 4 straight shutouts against us in that one season. but i wouldn't be suprised it their rotation turned out very solid if sheets stays healthy.

Sort of...
Cappy's career line against the Cubs is solid (3.47 ERA, 1.19 WHIP, .247 BAA), but he's only tossed 2 shutouts against the Cubs, both in 2006, and he also  sandwiched an 8 IP, 0 ER performance in between them.

Thing about the knee
If he was in the AL it would be a bit different, but pitchers in the NL, like REAL baseball players, have to occasionally run the bases.

He'll miss the series against the Cubs
and even though he should be back by the ende of April, if they decide to take it real slow or if he has any setbacks, the Cubs and Brewers close off April as well, which would be very significant.

Incidentally...
... Mike Cameron's first game back from his suspension will be the first game of that late-April series. The Brewers have exactly 25 games scheduled before then.
