Soriano Hurting??

On page 53 of the February 4th edition of "The Sporting News", they have the following:

"Cubs LF Alfonso Soriano caused concern among North Side fans last week when he said "I don't know how I feel about my leg," in response to a question about the health of his torn quadriceps, which clearly slowed him late last season.  The Cubs got only 19 stolen bases out of him in 2007, and if he is still worried about the leg, they won't get many more this year."

I hadn't heard this.  Does anyone know anything about his health?  It would be a big blow to lose his speed, especially if he's going to lead off again.

Soriano said
last week that he doesn't no how his leg feels, because he hasn't tried to run on it yet. I'm sure it will be fine, but Soriano probably doesn't wanna say it's great if he doesn't know for sure.

I think...
... this sums it up pretty well. We'll know in a couple of weeks.

In any case, his leg, which had to be less than healed when he came back several weeks early last August, didn't stop him from hitting 14 HR in September (a club record). So at least his power didn't seem to be affected.

soriano
spring training is always a time of crossing your fingers and holding your breath.nothing worse than having your players injured in meaningless games.last year we enjoyed good health for the 1st time in a long time.let,s hope for a repeat.

It would probably be big news
if Soriano really was hurting.  He just hasn't tested it out much yet, resting his legs during the offseason to make sure he's healthy this year.  Until we get news to the contrary there isn't much to worry about.  He should be fine.

Soriano
Given that Soriano suffered a serious injury in 2007, is now in his early 30s and is being paid $136 million over 8 years I would imagine his days of being a prolific stolen base guy and a very aggressive baserunner are over.

Which is why....
the Cubs won't give up on Brian Roberts.  I'm convinced it has nothing to do with DeRosa not being able to do the job, it's the speed and stolen bases that they are after.  Which makes sense, and that's why I'll be fine with it if we do get him even though I love DeRosa.

Great...
I read that as well, and they have a lot of early season home games too, opening day in march in chicago was a fantastic idea Bud

March 31.
The Cubs have opened on April 1 and April 2 before at home. Not that big a difference, is there?

That said, the Cubs HAVE complained about the early-season home schedule which will have them playing 33 home games by May 31. There's nothing that can be done about it this year, but you can bet the Cubs will attempt to be heavily involved in influencing the 2009 schedule, especially with a new owner.

No, not that much of a difference
but just the fact that the calender will still say March is a bit strange...Im not sure how much influence individual teams have on schedule making anyhow, but with everythign that went on last spring, especially with that Seattle/Cleveland series that had to move to Milwaukee, youd figured theyd play as much as they could in the south and/or domed stadiums in the first two weeks or so.

The Cubs also opened on March 31...
... in 2003.

In New York.

They won 15-2, beating the living daylights out of Tom Glavine. Corey Patterson hit 2 HR and had 7 RBI. No, I'm not making that up. Here's the boxscore.

In fact
He (Patterson) started the year very strong. If  not for that injury in June, things might have turned out much differently.

possible upside
if he can't run, maybe Lou will slide him down the 5 hole where he belongs and he'll grow to like it down there. It happened when he moved to the outfield.

30 and bad legs
Doesn't spell out to be a big stolen base year.  Soriano had injuries to a hamstring and quad last year.  I know he is a special athlete, but time slows healing, and there is a point in time where you don't come back 100% from an injury, and your talents begin to dull.

by Nibbles on Feb 2, 2008 7:38 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

I don't get
the whole "he hasn't tested it out yet" thing. These are professional athletes and spring training is a couple weeks away. Should not he have been working out on his own for weeks already? I don't want to question a super star athlete, but you'd think guys would come to camp ready to go, not come to camp to get ready to go. Whatever happened to off-season training regimens?

by Hren on Feb 3, 2008 4:42 PM CST reply actions   0 recs

That surprised
me as well.  I wouldn't expect him to be going full bore, but you would think he would be running at 80-85% just to stay in shape.
