DeRosa taken to Hospital

For an irregular heartbeat. The rotoworld article said that DeRo was sitting up and alert so hopefully this turns out to be nothing.

The article also says this has happened to DeRo before, but I can't seem to remember how long ago this was. Can anyone help me out here?

Damn..
I hope this is minor and he's going to still be able to play. He brings a lot to the Cubs lineup.

GETTER BETTER DeRO!

The source article...
... is here. Once again I ask that if anyone finds info like this on a fantasy site like Rotoworld, please click through and post the original source article. Thanks.

I, too, hope DeRosa is OK. If he's had this before, then it probably isn't a big deal.

Roberts has been out with Kidney Stone
which was removed earlier this week. and has yet to play  in Spring Training. Let's hope both of them are healthy and playing next week.

Tribune Update
Lou states that he is stable at this point and is just having some tests done at the hospital to gain a bit more information.

The article at...
... cubs.com has a little more from Lou:
"He came in with a rapid heartbeat from doing the things on the field and was having a little trouble breathing, so they called in the medical team," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "He's completely stable but better to be safe than sorry, with the irregular heartbeat and so forth; they took him to a hospital to test him. He's fine.

"He's had this before and he's been able to modify it with breathing exercises, but today it didn't go away," Piniella said.

DeRosa felt faint, but never lost consciousness.

"I talked to him, and he was a little nervous but outside of that, he's OK," Piniella said. "I don't expect this to be serious and I don't expect it to be long."

Sounds like he'll be OK.

Tachycardia?
Sounds like a bout of what's called "tachycardia", which is an elevated heartbeat with low BP.  It can have a few different causes, and is pretty scary for the person involved.  (I have had to take a friend to the ER a time or two for this...)

Your "breathing exercises" thing clued me.

Any medical people on here that can go into more detail?  I'm a photographer/editor...

Almost sounds like
an anxiety attack as well which tachycardia is a symptom of (abnormally fast heart rate).

Abnormal heart rhythms can be caused from a variety of reasons.  He may have a sensativity to caffeine, or it could be a genectic anomoly he has within the conduction mechanism in his heart that gets triggered by the perfect circumstances.  If he has had it before, they probably have a pretty good feel for it's origin.

I studied this stuff in graduate school but am no doc by any means.  Of all athletes, african american basketball players have the highest incidence of abmormal heart rhythms (Wolf-Parkinson White syndrome).

Anyway, I am sure he is going to be fine, although they may put him on a medication to keep this under control if they think it could be a chronic problem.

They said on
Sports Nite just a few minutes ago that he's had this since childhood. Sounds like he's doing ok and I hope he's back to training soon.

Scary
He plays at such a high level, a wonder he doesn't have an attack legging out a double or something.

If it is tachycardia...
I actually have a diagnosis of supraventrical tachycardia since age 15 (currently 32).  Aside from the need to stop and implement breathing exercises, it can cause some blotchy vision.  Episodes (for me) can last 30 seconds to a few minutes.  They can vary from a daily occurances to weekly.  It's not a diet or stress-related thing either - Geez, BCB seems to have turned into WebMD :)

Aside from a baseball geek, I'm an avid rock climber.  Have had attacks several hundred feet off the ground a few times, and am here to report that they go away after a bit.

Anyways, hope DeRo is doing well.  Guess I have another reason to root for him!

Update
DeRosa left the hospital last night and apparently will be fine. Good news.

That report appears to be inaccurate...
looks like DeRo remains in the hospital and will seen by a cardiologist on Monday. Cubs still seem to be saying this is nothing, however I am concerned this could become an issue.  Lets hope for the best.
