Jose Ascanio beaten up

http://blogs.chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sports_hardball/2008/02/cubs-reliever-i.html

Apparently some guy tried to rob him and then punched him in the face a few times. Article says he has swelling but nothing too serious and will be able to throw fine on Monday according to Lou. Thank god nothing worse happened, as it probably could have.

Fitch Park robbery
Cubs prospects Jeff Samardzija, Tyler Colvin and Jake Fox were victimized by a local burglar who allegedly stole more than $10,000 from four locations over the last five months, the Arizona Republic reported.

Mesa police on Saturday arrested Todd Robert Smith, 44, whom a witness said was spotted in the Cubs' clubhouse in Fitch Park on Jan. 29 and then escorted out of the building.

Sunglasses, gloves, credit cards, checkbooks, Samardzija's cell phone and personal IDs were stolen out of their lockers. Samardzija's credit card was used minutes later at a nearby Wal-Mart.

Fox, whose wallet was stolen, said "the guy came in at the right spot, at the right time." Fortunately for Fox, he didn't lose any money.

"I didn't have any money in my wallet, believe it or not," Fox said with a laugh. "I rarely have any money in my wallet."

Cuz it's only a Minor League deal
One of those moves where if he starts picking up some of his lost velocity from sugery, over the next month and something happens to another Pitcher during ST and he turns into a vegetarian and started understanding what a dumbell and a stationary bike are and everything in the Universe is perfectly aligned, he could make the team.

To answer your question, Because it's just a Minor League contract.

This incident supports my theory...
...that major league pitchers should always carry around a spare baseball or two with them. This would-be thief might think twice about mugging someone again if Jose had plunked him with a 95 mph heater to the dome.
Ladies and gentlemen, your 2008 Chicago Cubs starting outfield: Soriano-Pie-Fukudome. Let it be.

Poor Jose
Funny the apparent crime spree in the upscale Mesa / Scottsdale area of all places.  I hope Ascanio is okay.  You never know what can happen in those situations.   The perp could be a strung out druggie with a knife or a gun.  All things considered coming away with a punched in face isn't so bad.
