2008 Community Projections: Ted Lilly

Last year, a lot of people made comparisons between Ted Lilly and Bronson Arroyo -- a lefthander who had had middling success in the NL East, and guessed that Lilly, as did Arroyo in 2006, would do better coming over to the "easier" NL Central.

That's exactly what happened -- Lilly became one of the top lefties in the NL. Now, we are hoping that he doesn't regress in 2008, as Arroyo did in 2007 for the Reds.

One of the key things for Lilly is to keep his walk count down, as he did last year. Ted set career bests in innings, strikeouts, WHIP, and ERA. His 55 walks ranked sixth among all qualified (162+ innings) pitchers in the NL.

I had to think
Someone would notice that. I thought a little high as well. All my projections are based on a computer simulation. I painfully (out of love) updated all ML 2008 rosters.

It took me a few weekends to update. I think what went wrong is I did not turn on my over usage option. For example I have Pie with 600+ AB. Lilly with too many innings, and a few other irregularities.

FYI, the Cubs did go 93-69. I can only hope they can do this in real life.

Lilly Thoughts
One has to project some sort of regression to his norm, but I really think he firmly learned the mental approach to effective pitching last year.  I expect a solid season.

Decent numbers for a guy who's a number 4 or 5 starter.  Thank goodness the Cubs are going to get a Cy Young-like performance out of Zambrano and a super 20 win season out of Hill

Lilly vs. Arroyo
I don't mean for this to be a discussion on a projection thread but Arroyo was figured out after he got through the league a couple times in '06 and lost 5 straight decisions after starting 9-3 with a 2.47 ERA, and finished 14-11. Lilly put together a much more complete season, so I expect him to fair a little better than Bronson did in '07.

Da Prez
Like most of y'all (sorry, read a Blender piece on Britney Spears this morning), I'm predicting some regression for Lilly this season. But his numbers last year were so remarkable that I have to believe he's really found himself with the Cubs and will give us another solid season. Better yet, any regression Lilly suffers will be compensated for by another PROgression from Rich Hill. Ah, the sweet yin yang of those crafy lefties. Anyhoo...
