BCB Project 3000 Donations (and other site notes)

Last November, as we did the year before, we had a "Free Agent Frenzy" contest to mirror MLB.com's similar contest.

They -- and we -- should have thought of this; there's one free agent in the contest (Barry Bonds) who is still unsigned. Based on everything I've heard and read, he's probably going to remain unsigned. Don't know what MLB.com is going to do, but I'd like to declare our contest over. Here are all the original picks. If someone could go through and tally up all the points and let me know the winner is (leaving out all points for Bonds), I will send out the prize, which is a copy of the book The Cubs: The Complete Story of Chicago Cubs Baseball by Glenn Stout.

Also, we are about to tally up everything now that the shirts have all been delivered and there will be a substantial sum left over to donate to Derrek Lee's Project 3000 -- which was part of the point of doing the shirts in the first place. I'll let you all know how much after the final tally. We can add to this, too. Last year several of us, myself included, pledged to donate to Project 3000 based on the 2007 season performance of various Cubs. (I pledged $10 for every Ryan Dempster save, a total of $280, which I am happy to donate.)

All the pledges are here. (Link opens Excel spreadsheet.) If you are on the spreadsheet as having made a pledge, please contact me; I have contacted someone with Project 3000 to find out who you can make out your check to, then send the check to me and I'll send them in all at once.

Thanks to the generosity of BCB readers, we should have quite a large donation to make to Project 3000.

Pledges
I thought I pledged and I'm not on the spreadsheet.

Can I send you a check anyway to go towards the final tally?

If you read this please include my friend Heather and my friend's mom Karen in your prayers. If you want to hear more email me.

spreadsheet
al, when you need to post a spreadsheet online, might I suggest google docs?

docs.google.com

you can post the sheets, and paranoid people (like me!) don't have to worry about viruses and the like that come with excel files distributed online.  plus, it's totally free, and you can collaborate with others easily and in real time.

i am in no way affiliated with google or it's subsidiaries ;-)

keep up the good work with your site... been a daily reader for many years.

If...
... I knew how to do that, I would. The spreadsheet I posted has been virus-checked.

Last year
I bet reader/poster "Scott", that the Cubs would finish below .500. This was in May, I think.

Happily, two things happened: I sent a donation to Proj. 3000, and also learned that a baseball season is long and anything can happen. Even to our Cubbies!

Very valuable experience!

Wait 'til next year. And the next. And the Next. And the next after that too.

Cubs colored fireworks signify a Cubbies Win at Wrigley West.

Actually, there was a patriotic fireworks display after the game. I don't say this as an Oakland A's fan, but I'll tell you without reservation that fireworks games are better at the Oakland Colisseum.

Tonight's fireworks were over the bay and into the fog. Also, the best audio is inside the stadium while the best views are outside of it.

Usually in Oakland, people are let on the field, the speaker pump music through the stadium, and fireworks are shot overhead from the bridge that connects the stadium to the BART trains.

Long story short--come for the cubs v. giants game, leave for the train ASAP.
Raise that victory flag over Wrigley West!
CUBS WIN!!

Kerry Wood just struck out Fred Lewis despite giving up a triple to Bengie Molina. It was a close call for a slugfest of a game!

There's nothing like having the true blue fans rise up and cheer on our road warriors.
This is the right field wall that separates McCovey Cove and the stadium. Can you pick out all the blue in the stands? I nominate this place as Wrigley West--just grow soe Wrigleyville ivy on those bricks!

Fact: There is a splash hit counter toward the other end of the wall, and it only counts homers hit into the bay by SF Giants. They call them "legitimate splash hits."

What a crock!
It was Veterans Appreciation Day at AT&T Park, hence the military band and flag bearers. It was cool to see SF legend Willie Mays get honored for his military service.
