Filmmaker and crew to follow the 2008 Cubs

Filmmaker John Scheinfeld and a Chicago crew will follow the 2008 Cubs for a movie with a working title, "We Believe."

The documentary will take a revealing inquiry of Chicago, its people and the Cubs.

Carrie Muskat writes about We Believe at MLB.COM.

"It's not a history of the Cubs," Scheinfeld said Tuesday. "What we're doing is a film exploring the love affair between the great city, Chicago, and it's ball team, the Cubs -- what makes Chicago unique, the city, and what makes the people of Chicago unique and why they have supported this team so passionately for so long. We'll get into the psychology of that, the history of that.

The article claims, "this isn't...a sports movie," but Scheinfeld did mention to Cubs manager Lou Piniella during a recent interview "that it would definitely help if the team won it all."

We believe that you should honor that request, Lou.

Should be interesting

As I said in the other post about general baseball movies this should be a good film IF done right. They can't censor the clubhouse after the games and they must make it look real.

Since I'm in the entertainment industry I do have a source or two and they told me they've heard that the film is going to focus on following the likes of DLee and Ryan Theriot among a few other players as the main stars of the team. Considering they are two of the better speakers on the Cubs that makes a lot of sense.

However to be honest, I think when this documentary makes it onto DVD it would be a much better thing to watch because it should have hours of bonus features and deleted scenes. I'd love to see an uncensored Lou go off on the team during a loss. It's just something you wouldn't get to see otherwise.

Oh and most importantly, the producer MUST MUST MUST understand Chicago. The fans, the food, the city, Chicago in general.

According the article on Cubs.com,

the producer was born in Chicago but moved away as a kid. However, he says he is a "long-suffering Cubs fan". I like the fact that it's not some ESPN crew who kind of look at the Cubs and these Midwesterners (or "fly-over country" for them) with a kind of bemused detatchment, almost entertainment-like quality. He at least says all the right things. I certainly look forward to seeing the finished product.

Just don't water it down or censor it

I may be in the minority here but if Lou's pissed after a game and is yelling at the team in the clubhouse I want to hear that.

If the players are pissed that Eyre or Howry gave up 5 runs in the 7th to blow a game I want to see that frustration in the clubhouse too.

I want to feel for the team more than I can just watching it on TV.

Maybe being an Associate Producer myself I'm just saying how I would create the movie but boy I would love to see something like that done.

I am curious

how many people at a summer (June-July-August) Cubs game really live in Chicago? Seems to me there are a lot of "visitors" like me at the games. I know we discussed the evolution of the Cubs due to WGN TV and Harry Carray. If I lived in Chicago maybe going to a game would not be that big of a deal but getting to drive 5 hours like a Dale Earnhart is kinda fun to see my team. Just curious if a film crew can find a stadium full of Chicagoites at a Cubs game?? What's your guess? 60/40, 70/30 or 50/50? It's a mini vacation for a lot of us out of towners.

This is only the beginning....Lou Pinella end of '07 season and Chicago Transit Authority (the band when they were really good).
