**POLL** More Night Games at Wirgley?

I can't find the stat (Lord knows if I wasn't looking for it I'd find it easily) but as I recall the Cubs have a better overall record in night games then in day games.

Would you like to see the Cubs play more night games?

I voted no
because I am from Michigan. It is much easier to get to day games and get home to go to work in the morning. With night games, I don't get home until 1 or 2 in the morning. Though the 2 night games I went to last year (one of them being Wood's return) were pretty awesome.

Dont get me wrong
I LOVE DAYGAMES.  But Im not a kid anymore therefore must work.  I love day games I just would rather take a vacation day for something I can do all day, not for 4 hours.

I guess I am a little fortunate becauase I live right by the Sheridan stop and work at Evanston Hospital so getting from work to the game is very easy because of the L.  Thankfully as well, my boss grants 1/2 vacation days.

You obviously
don't understand what traffic is like around 6:05 in Chicago. Those games are nightmares to get to  if you hold a 9-5 job.

by ccd on Mar 12, 2008 9:28 PM CDT up reply actions

I can walk to the game though.
Im just voting for me personally, not whats best for everyone.

Its also a nightmare getting to a game at 120 when you have a 9-5.  ACtually ITS IMPOSSIBLE

This is why...
... virtually every team starts its night games at 7:05 (the Diamondbacks are a notable exception, starting theirs at 6:40).

Even that is a change. In the 1970's most teams started their home night games at 7:35 or even 8:05. When I first started working in the TV biz most White Sox home night games started at 8:05. The joke was that there was a rule that those games couldn't end until the 10 pm news was over.

I know
My comment was being totally selfish and completely to work best with my schedule.  I get home at 530 then I could watch a funny episode of something on TV and the game starts.  Id love it.

Wont happen----Im OK with day games, gives me something to listen to at work

1:20 starts
That's when you take the day off!

Maybe I'm too much the traditionalist, but I love the 1:20 start. I wouldstill prefer to take an afternoon off and go to the ballpark than I would go to a night game. There's just something really cool about afternoon games.

by ccd on Mar 13, 2008 1:20 PM CDT up reply actions

Chicago businesses should hope so
More night games = more work productivity and less "sick days" to fill up Wrigley at 1PM during the week.

by ak123 on Mar 12, 2008 11:46 AM CDT reply actions

Counterbalance
You need to Counterbalance this against the many people who have their evening commute destroyed everytime the Cubs play a Night Game.  Night Games make an already bad traffic problem worse.  Essentially everything from the Lake Front to Western, Irving Park to Belmont becomes one Giant Parking Lot.  And this, in turn, spills over to anyone who has to cross it.

As a person who lives about 2 miles from the ballpark, I can tell you that I would love it if the Cubs were banned from ever playing a weeknight Night game.  I can't even imagine what its like for someone that lives in the above described "block".

Of course, the best thing would be to build a new Park downtown where the Transportation System and other infrastructure is in place to support a park.  And the best place is smack dab in the middle of Grant Park -- thereby ending that other blight on the City - Taste of Chicago.

you don't like the taste?
i dont go often but I think its fun to go down for a day and grab some food.

Don't Like the Taste?
I detest the taste - particularly what it has become.  It has changed from offering a "representation" of what is offered in Chicago to a disnified version of overpriced, poorly prepared, standardized food.  Its dirty, its noisy, its vastly overpriced and its another prime example as to why Richard Daley is a horrible mayor.  He doesn't want to live in a City, he wants to live in Disneyland with controls over everything.

by frustratedfan on Mar 12, 2008 4:26 PM CDT up reply actions

Not sure where I read this but...
players new to the Cubs sometimes have a difficult time adjusting to the variety of day/night game schedule compared to other teams.  Juan Pierre, Derrek Lee, and Soriano all started out slowly, but then got better.  Granted, 500 other factors probably figure more predominately into this equation.

That said, I prefer day games.  Nothing beats skipping work to goto Wrigley.  :)

by Neifi Puppy on Mar 12, 2008 12:11 PM CDT reply actions

The fans vote with their attendance....
...and the Cubs don't seem to be hurting in this department.

Selfishly, I look forward to day games during the week so I don't have to spend the night in Chicago.  Games are expensive enough as it is.  I can make the 5 hour trip, watch a noon game and go back to Des Moines that night.

As far as a small boost to the Chicago economy, it would make sense to add a dozen more night games or so, so that out of towners have to stay the night.

An open invitation to visit Des Moines and watch the Iowa Cubs...

by IowaCubs- on Mar 12, 2008 12:12 PM CDT reply actions

I voted no
for aesthetic reasons. I like day games better. However, if I were the Cubs (i.e. player or managment), I would certainly want more night games, and I won't blame them for trying to get them.

You should have had a third choice...
... "don't care".

I'm as traditional as anyone and love day baseball. But it really doesn't matter to me.

Night games
Mayor Daley is doubtful to support more night games.  And that's where this issue starts and stops.

by MDBNIU on Mar 12, 2008 1:07 PM CDT reply actions

night games........
I would like more night games personally. Although my reasons are selfish. I live in Denver and work during the day, so it is much easier for me to catch the games on tv that way.
You gotta believe!!!

This is really one decision that I think...
should be left to that alderman, and his constituents. Whatever the residents want to do is fine by me.

Day games
I voted no, even though I miss many day games due to work and enjoy the convenience of coming home and watching night games.

I actually wouldn't mind if they added a handful of night games from what they have now, but this is a slippery slope. I'd hate to get to the point where they play 65 to 70 a year, because Wrigley is at its most beautiful during the day.

Mayor Daley and Tom Tunney are strongly aligned
I don't think more night games will happen anytime soon.   Daley has not been in the mood to be charitable to the Cubs and seemingly always gets angry when the subject of more night games comes up.  Without his backing this idea is dead before it gets off the ground.

by MDBNIU on Mar 12, 2008 1:19 PM CDT up reply actions

Well,...
that's fine. I think it really is alot to ask a semi-residential neighborhood to support the traffic and congestion at night. I guess they do too.

by Damen Jackson on Mar 12, 2008 1:24 PM CDT up reply actions

I think more is better.
I agree with the above comment that I don't think it's necessary to get to the league average, which I think is about 54 or 55 out of 81 home dates at night.  Roughly two-thirds at night.  The Cubs currently do a bit over one-third (about 37 percent) if they hit their allotment of 30, but I think more would benefit the team, and most players, when asked, seem to agree.

We can debate this every day of the world and twice on Sunday, but I still say that more day games in the hot summer months is a disadvantage.  I'm not saying it's THE reason the Cubs haven't won a World Series, because it's not.  I'm saying it's a disadvantage, when most other teams are playing in cooler temperatures, coming off road trips and having the entire day to rest, etc.  It's all about the body clock, and working in the hotel business where my schedule is all over the place, I can relate.  Anything that is to the Cubs' advantage, meaning the players, I'm all for.  I think maybe 40 night games, or about half, would be a good thing for the team, and not too much to ask from the city.  And I think Wrigley Field is equally beautiful at night as it is during the day.

Change the question slightly...
If there was a study that showed more night games would equal more wins, would you as a fan want more night games?

Wins versus more game at night
If I was given a choice

All Night Games and three World Series Wins in a row
Current Night Games and a World Series Win or
All Day Games and another 100 years of frustration

I would reluctantly take all Day Games and another 100 years of frustration.

by joeschmitt on Mar 12, 2008 3:30 PM CDT up reply actions

I voted yes because
I think the players would prefer to see it.  Not quite what Higgy is saying, but that is the point -- if it translates to wins, I'm all for it.

I prefer the asthetic of day games because that's what I grew up with, and it's easier to enjoy a game on a nice summer day, have dinner at Lou Malnotti's and still get home at a decent hour.

I also think it should be an advantage to play day games for two reasons -- on days when the Cubs win at home (and are in the race), the competition sees that before they even take the field.  Plus, as Lee alluded to yesterday, the home team should be used to it.

Having said that, if the team still sees it otherwise, well, maybe there is something to it.

The neighborhood...
has given in on this alot in recent years. They have increased night games so many times, I honestly am surprised to hear the Cubs already complain about this. The Cubs have gotten pretty demanding of the city and state recently. I don't really think the neighborhood or city has been hard to deal with in recent years, compared to the Bernie Hansen years when the relationship with the neighborhood was downright poor.
