Sun-Times Attacks State Wrigley Purchase

http://www.suntimes.com/news/commentary/840464,CST-EDT-field13.article

Bravo. Someone willing to speak out and attack the lie that this would not cost taxpayer's money.

It would. Just like TIF districts.  When you cap sales taxes going to the city and divert the additional revenue to pay for things that private industry can easily afford, its called corporate welfare. And people who live in the city are going to pay and suffer for it as a result. This is why we still need the Sun-Times. A voice willing to challenge authority.

Last Week's Reader
This was also written about by the esteemed Ben Joravsky in last week's Reader, another independent voice that's struggling to compete in this new media landscape.

I appreciate the fact....
that the Sun-Times has taken such an anti-Zell, pro-fan stance in this entire process.  However, the cynic in me can't help but wonder if they have been so passionate about this because it gives them a daily forum to bash their main competitor and make themselves look like the "voice of the people"?  Would they take such a passionate stand against this if the Cubs were still owned by the Wrigley family, for example?  Maybe they would, but maybe the Tribune would also, instead of having to toe the company line.

That's exactly why they're doing it.
It's Tribune-bashing. Not that I'd necessarily disagree, but it has nothing to do with a "pro-fan" stance. They just want to bash Zell and Tribco.

Yeah...but
they happen to be absolutely right on. So whether they're trying to draw attention to themselves or not, that shouldn't necessarily diminish their argument. And they're not just being pro-fan, they're being pro-citizen and pro-democracy.

Oh, I understand that.
I just wish they'd do it in a less tabloid-sensational way.

Trib-Co spin
A spin is a spin no matter what direction or how fast is goes.

This is a taxpayer-funded activity, plain and simple. As soon as sales tax growth limitations are affected, it's just a sleazy politician (insert your favorite names here) and sleazy owner's (get the f'ing zell out of here) attempt to gouge.

I love capitalism but when people's motivation are there to use that slant as a method to hide public funding, its simply immoral. But with Zell I guess we shouldn't be surprised, right?

When its time for Trib-co to sell the team, it will be very interesting to see what Bud-lite and his cronies, headed up by Reinsdorf really do.

OT: Baseball alive at old Tiger Stadium site
I have to admit, i didn't expect this to work, and i generally don't condone ratting somebody out, but i think Woo Woo inspires special circumstances.

He was a few rows above me and a group of maybe a hundred other University of Iowa alumni last night, and started right in with the wooing early and loud. Between innings, he was... how shall i say this... creeping around? We all know his reputation.

Within 10 minutes of making a complaint to the Cubs text line, he was gone. Might be worth trying in future instances.

Sorry for the crappy picture quality... just got a new phone (HTC EVO) and am not sure how to take screen caps yet.
