If you could play any position as a Cub at Wrigley Field for one game what would it be and why?
This is simple for me. I grew up watching Ryne Sandberg patrol 2nd base. The so called worst groomed and toughest 2nd base to play in the MLB at the time. I remember tuning in every day during his NL record breaking 123 game errorless streak on the edge of me bean bag every time a ball came his way. I'd for sure want to stand the same ground Ryno rocked.

How do you make it so that you don't have an avatar?

I guess like that
are they getting rid of the barack obama avatar for those of us who are too lame to get our own?

not likely
The only reason I don't have my own avatar is because my account is still messed up, and I can't edit my profile or anything. Believe me, I hate the generic sports fan guy's face too.

Dunston
I've read some hilarious passages about that, from - I believe - Sandberg's autobiography "Second to Home". Sandberg and Gracie both liked to razz Dunston about it. Rightly so!

First base
because even though I'd rather play left field, my arm's not what it used to be and I do have good hands and can flash the leather. I would love to make a dazzling short hop catch from The Riot to end the game with the potential winning run on third.

Pitcher.....
Everyday as a kid, through Little League all the way through college, my dream was to pitch on the mound at Wrigley Field!! It is something I have always envisioned.
As a high school senior, I was granted the opprotunity to pitch at the old Busch Stadium. My high school at the time was doing this trip every couple of years and we played and exhibition against another team from nearby. It was truly a great experience and something I will never forget, even if it was Busch. It was right prior to the Major League game too, so some of the player from the Cards and Marlins came into the dugouts and hung out for a bit while we were finishing up.....

Seems like if you make a mistake, they're going to hit it pretty hard somewhere. Of course, "somewhere" could be a missile right at the left fielder.

Right field and wearing #21, but...
...definitely NOT because of Sammy Sosa.
Rather, it'd be my way of connecting and paying tribute to another right fielder who wore #21 and graced Wrigley Field on occasion. That would be my baseball (and real life) hero - Roberto Clemente.
Of course, knowing that the Hawk played out there a few years doesn't hurt either...

Right field
I would love to be in right field. iIt provides a great view of the entire field. And, although his final days were a mess, Sammy was a big part of my becoming a fan. His enthusiasm was infectious and those dingers!

1st base
Over 3/4ths of all games I've ever played in organized ball was at first base. It's natural for me being a southpaw.

I remember
playing little league in the Back of the Yards group. I always wanted to pitch although I played SS and 3B. Finally my manager put me in and the first batter I faced was the other manager's son.
First pitch I dropped him. But I K'd the next 3 batters who bailed out on every pitch I threw for fear of their life.

3B
That is the only place I likely wouldn't get totally humiliated at. I played 3B in high school and later in college before, transferring to 1B. we had a young stud at 3B and our 1B was a senior, so if I were to get any playing time, I was going to have to relocate. I would love to play third at Wrigley.

Pinch Hitter
I can't run, I can't catch, I got no glove. I'd like to be the Lenny Harris of the team. Hang around until I'm useless, then continue to hang around a little longer. Put me in for one AB per game or as an emergency (dire emergency) substitute.
If I have to have a position listed (to make the people at Topps and Vineline happy), I'd do 1st base. It looks like it's one of the easier positions out there.

Center Field
...put me in, coach! It would be awesome to run around and dive for some sinking liners on that turf. True hops, and no scraped knees like the softball fields I'm on now.
Best of all, you can visit right and left fields quite often...

Pitcher
Would like to see if this broken down old lefty could still get somebody out .... but I'd still do it in a second even knowing in advance that it would result in massive embarrassment. Definitively worth it for the chance to wear the uniform for real just once!
Why pitch? Well, it's still only about 70% of the game ....

3rd Base
Only because Ron Santo is my favorite Cub even though I never got to see him play due to the fact he retired before I was even born. Although the thought of playing Center Field, running out into that green heaven like Sammy used to do, the thought alone gives me goosebumbs.

as a little kid
being a lefty all my coaches always said they needed to teach me to pitch. Sadly, that never happened. I played a little first base and a ton of outfield when I was younger but I think I'd really like to pitch. I'd have to reclaim my number from Rich Hill but I'm sure he'd understand.

Have to go with 2B
I'd love to play catcher or one of the OF spots, but I've never had the arm for it. Second was always my spot from little league through high school. There is nothing like turning a double play and doing it at Wrigley would be heaven.

My best year or two...
...in Little League was playing first base, so I grew up picturing myself playing there for the Cubs. (I also fantasized about playing shortstop a lot, too. What can I say? I had an active imagination.)
As an adult, though, I definitely identify most with pitchers. I can't recall the writer, but some literary scribe out there once likened pitchers to writers, weaving the story of the game with every pitch thrown. (I'm not sure what that makes catchers -- editors?) And that's where I'd like to be: On the mound, spinning one ripping yarn after another.
Ladies and gentlemen, your 2008 Chicago Cubs starting outfield: Soriano-Pie-Fukudome. Let it be.

Left
I've always loved playing left field, because you get so many chances to catch a ball out there. It's a position I played on my high school team and still play in 12 inch softball.
At Wrigley, the fans in the left field bleachers are a special bunch and develop close relationships with the Cubs left fielder (especially the case with Gary Matthews). I'd relish waving to those fans and talking to them.
I still remember sitting in the LF bleachers back in the early 90s, when Bonds was playing for Pittsburgh, and the left field fans ragged him the entire game. Around the eighth inning, he finally put his hand behind his back and gave the entire LF bleachers the middle finger.

Bullpen catcher
You get to be there every day, travel with the team, watch most of the games from on the field...It'd be ridiculous. Plus, you could never be the goat and you'd have an anonymity when you wanted it. Just let some balls slip past you when warming up a pitcher in the 8th inning of any playoff game in which the Cubs are losing and the other team is batting.
Seriously though I'd like to play outfield. There's something about being out there on so much grass. Soriano looks like he has a blast out there, and so have so many others.

Why? No pressure whatsoever to perform. :)
Actually I would want to be the left or right fielder...except for the fact that I have no depth perception.

Honestly though when talking to my GF about this....she my love or hate this site because I talk about it so much.....I came up with the answer HITTER. I would love to take an at -bat at Wrigley.

I'm sure I'll see him when the season starts. Any message you want to pass along?

lol - that's funny. If you've seen him in there during batting practice, you'd know how true of a statement that is. CSI Chicago would have a field day collecting all sorts of skin and hair matter from the bleachers after he's done diving around. The man has no fear...
