Open Thread: Cubs vs. Royals, Tuesday 3/18, 3:05 CT
SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- Not a cloud in the sky this morning, so the brief weather interregnum -- which made it partly cloudy and coolish the last two days -- seems to be over. Today, it will be sunny and 74 with light winds, a perfect day to resume the spring schedule.
Notes from today:
- Jay Mariotti is still an idiot. In fact, the fact that he's written this Don't-Use-Wood-As-Closer column means that Kerry will not only get the job, but be a huge success.
- The Trade That Shall Not Be Named -- to the White Sox?
- Bruce Miles summarizes the 2008 story so far.
- The sale of Wrigley Field to the state? Dead, says the Tribune. The Sun-Times, however, which has had blazing tabloid headlines opposing this deal, says the ISFA is still going to try to geat the deal done.
- Dave van Dyck of the Tribune summarizes possible roster cuts and moves, although I disagree with him on Tim Lahey. I think Lahey is ticketed for Iowa (after he's "returned" to the Twins and then "sent back" as the PTBNL in the Craig Monroe trade), and Kevin Hart is going to make the team.
Royals lefthander John Bale faces Jason Marquis, who is making his fourth spring start. You can hear it via the Royals radio station or MLB.TV at the MLB.com Mediacenter.
Discuss amongst yourselves.

Will this video feed have Royals announcers, or generic ones from MLB.TV? Maybe it will just have a webcam pointed at the field, and we can supply our own PBP...

I think he will...
... that would make sense, since he threw on Friday and Sunday. That would then set him up to go in one of the split squad games tomorrow, which would be 3 of 4 days and 4 of 6, which is a typical load for a closer.

Mariotti
The guy seems to just take the unpopular view and make it his own. It's fine once in a while, but when you do that EVERY time you right or editorialize, you lose credibility, of which he has none.
I was on the Marmol for Closer campaign trail, but I'm starting to believe Woody will do great, and Marmol can get another year setting up.

Mariotti is a blathering idiot
The guy is the ultimate pessimist and hasn't written anything worthwhile or original in years. He claims to be a Cubs fan but all he does is bash them every chance he gets. How does this guy still have a job. I used to like watching Around the Horn but Mariotti is on the show too much and makes it a complete debacle.

I dislike
Mariotti as well. His negative approach has always annoyed me and I really started to dislike him when I watched ATH. I was always a Woody Paige fan for some reason. I think he was more entertaining. The one thing about Mariotti's articles that annoys me the most are his constant pop culture analogies/metaphors. Comparing sports to Britney Spears, etc. is idiotic and annoys that sports fan who couldn't give two _____ts about Britney or any other pop culture figure for that matter. Give me some stats to support your position, I can do without silly metaphors. (Man, that soap box caught me by surprise, sorry)

Lahey...
... I have asked this before, and I thought that was an alternative - send Lahey back to the Twins, get $25K, and then get him back from the Twins as the PTBNL and send him to AAA.
What's with clearing waivers, though?
Should the Cubs keep Tim Lahey, who was claimed during the winter in the Rule 5 draft and has been impressive this spring? If they don't, they will lose him because he would not clear waivers. He will either make the team or be used as trade bait.
Jacque Jones is gone, and I doubt Ivan DeJesus would mind this!
by initram on Mar 18, 2008 10:56 AM CDT 0 recs
This is what everyone seems to keep missing...
to return him to the Twins requires that you put him on OUTRIGHT waivers first. There is no way you can put this guy out there after his spring, and he not get claimed. I doubt you'd even make it past the Nationals before he was picked up.

Are you sure about this?
Maybe there's a "gentleman's agreement" between GM's that this can/will be done. Teams do it all the time.
Plus, I thought returning Rule 5 picks was done WITHOUT having to clear waivers. Where did that quotebox come from?

I hope you're kidding...
If you think that you can stick a minimum salary, major league ready reliever, coming off a great spring on the waiver wire, and he not get claimed. Those kind of gentlemen are long gone, I assure you.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/s/transanctionsprimer.html
"A player drafted onto a Major League roster in the Rule 5 draft must remain in the majors (on the 25-man active roster or the DL) for all of the subsequent season, or the drafting club must attempt to return him to his original club. However, since a returned Rule 5 player must first be placed on outright waivers, a third club could claim the player off waivers. But of course, that club would then also have to keep him in the majors all season, or offer him back to his original club."

It sounds
like, if Lahey's worth it, he's on the 25-man, no further questions. He better be worth it though, because I'd much rather see Hart out there. If we can just push Marquis out, then everything could fall into place perfectly.

Well..there is a small piece of verbiage...
about trade scenarios included, so there might be a sliver of a chance. But between the league office (I can hear the Brewers crying foul from downtown Chicago), and Lahey likely worth more than anyone that Hendry was given on the trade candidate list from the Twins on that Monroe deal, Al is making ALOT of assumptions about this guy.

I think the bottom line is...

Lahey
My understanding is that if there was a trade like this, basically before the Cubs would offer Lahey back to the Twins, they'd make the trade, giving the Cubs his rights. So instead of offering him back to the Twins, they'd basically be offering him back to themselves. The waivers thing is confusing... I've never seen players sent back to their original team go through the waiver process.
But as for Lahey, a trade of this sort requires the Twins to be willing. If the Cubs are so high on Lahey its possible that the Twins are, too and would prefer to have him back. They're a team that's rebuilding so he'd be a possible bullpen piece for he future.

Miniscule grains of salt in any insinuations on Roberts trade, given the constant media cycle, but the interesting text is "They reportedly are looking at veteran middle infielders." Does that mean that an unsatisfactory Cubs middle infielder (see, Ronny Cedeno) pushed the Orioles' considerations in another direction?

The Sun Times'
editorial board should be ashamed. There's such an obvious conflict of interest in their unapologetically negative "reporting" of the sale of Wrigley Field. And this is not to mention the pompous moralizing tone of these pieces.
Although, I guess this is what should we expect from a paper that continues to employ Jay the Jerk.

I feel bad that Mariotti is inspiring me to write my first post, but I don't understand the logic. He's basically saying what? That Wood shouldn't pitch because he might blow out his arm? Why should anyone play then? Everyone risks injury getting on the field. If he's capable, let him take care of business until he can't.
by fndr5 on Mar 18, 2008 11:43 AM CDT 0 recs
Agreed
If it's going to happen, it's going to happen. Also, since Wood takes a while to get warm, the closer spot is the best one for him, since you can plan around the ninth inning far easier than specific setup situations.

This much we know...
The Cubs are going to get a right-handed hitting option to help out in centerfield. And they have to do SOMETHING with Jason Marquis short of having him go kicking and screaming into the bullpen where he will waste a valuable spot.
How about this???? Jason Marquis, Matt Murton and a subscription to Vineline for Marlon Byrd??? Okay, we'll have to also throw in several million dollars to get Texas to maybe bite.
While it makes me sad, I am absolutely convinced that Brian Roberts is on the verge of becoming a Cub. So maybe a Roberts and Payton deal "solves" a lot of these issues. Though why on earth would Baltimore want to eat the contract of Marquis without additional enticement??

It hurts, to be sure...
but when it comes to rebuilding, get ugly early. If you want to do it right, dump everyone who is making more than 3 million a year, get what prospects you can, and use the cash to pay over slot if needed for the next couple of drafts.
So, Traschel it is.

Baltimore is in serious rebuilding mode. If they're going to be awful there are much cheaper options then adding Jason Marquis and his $16.5 million due to the equation. The world is awash with Steve Trachsel like options that are dramatically cheaper.

That's a good question. My cable box says there is an MLB game on CSN at 3pm Central today -- but it's the Chicago White Sox vs. the Kansas City Royals. So I go to the White Sox Web site (ooh, that stings), and it says the Sox are playing the Padres today. Wherein lies the truth?
I had a similiar problem this past Thursday, when I was actually home to watch the game. Both the Cubs and CSN's Web sites said the game was televised, but the game didn't show up on my cable box "guide" and, indeed, it was not on. Maddening.

This is such a bad parallel that I can't even begin to believe he would go there:
But do I trust the story line? Oh, about as much as Aramis Ramirez with a fighting rooster or Eliot Spitzer with free time on his hands.
Is he honestly comparing the two as being similar? Ramirez partaking in legal cockfighting in his own country compared to a married governor hiring prostitutes?
If someone tugged his ear I bet the sound of hissing air would deafen you. Kind of like a balloon that you tried to tie up and the knot slipped on it, but instead of just air the air would smell like a week old fart.

Mariotti is a drama queen
I'm with Canadia Cubs Fan on the Mariotti. It's like Mariotti picks the headline that will bring him the most attentoin rather then writing what he really thinks. I compare him to Senator Spector. Spector seems to have taken on the NFL to get popular like Mitchell. To get his name out there, not really having any personal reason to pursue. Same with Mariotti. Always throwing out his opinion not to inform but to get a reaction that will put him in the public eye.
I'm drunk......and it shows.....
by Keystone80435 on Mar 18, 2008 1:09 PM CDT 0 recs
The most bothersome
thing of many about Mariotti is that we keep talking about him. It's difficult not to, I agree, especially because his opinion is in the spotlight that is MSM. But y'know what? With very few exceptions, I don't read or put any weight into anything these MSMorons say and pretend to think (for it is obvious that Mr. Rogers and Co. do not think). Do any of us?
Frankly, I read the blogs, especially ours here, for the most honest, thoughtful opinions and insights into Cubdom. We have several great writers and pundits ourselves, and we cover just about every angle possible, no? And we have Mr. Miles to lend us a bit of MSM street cred, along with Al's own accomplishments. Screw Mariotti and his ilk. He just makes us look a whole lot better. It's only a matter of time before his type is extinct. Maybe we should view his antics as the last gasps of a dying breed, a captive of the Sun-Times, no less .
I can almost feel sorry for him. Almost, I said.
