Open Thread: Cubs vs. Athletics, Wednesday 3/19, 2:05 CT

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- Yes, that's right: 2:05, not 3:05. The game is an hour earlier than it has been since the DST change, likely to give Lou and the staff an extra hour to prepare for the split-squad game against the Giants tonight (I'll post a recap of the day game later this afternoon which will also serve as the game thread for the night game). There will be audio coverage of both games via the MLB.com Mediacenter (A's announcers for the day game, MLB.com announcers for the night game, at least according to that link).

Other notes:
  • Jason Marquis is trade bait. Yawn. Yes, Gordon, we know.
  • Was yesterday's lineup the one we will see Lou Piniella submit on March 31? Maybe. Probably. Lou's going to decide soon, says that Paul Sullivan article.
  • Alex Cintron, who seemed to have made the roster, is hurt again, hurting his chances. Ronny Cedeno's big day yesterday probably helped his.
  • At last, we know Kerry Wood's prepare-to-be-the-closer schedule:
Piniella said Wood would pitch in consecutive games today and Thursday, take a day off, then pitch again -- ostensibly to see how Wood responds to the kind of schedule closers routinely work. "He'll pitch an inning both days, then a day off, then work an inning-plus the next game," Pinella said.
  • Finally, what's with the MLPBA "investigating" why Barry Bonds hasn't been signed? Doesn't Don Fehr have anything better to do?

That's a misleading headline.

Yes, technically the MLBPA is doing that; they're investigating why EVERY free agent remaining unsigned didn't get offers. They do this every offseason. I suspect this year they're going to be somewhat more rigorous about it than in other years, due to their allegations of colusion at the Winter Meetings.

But since MLB has a history of actually coluding it's hard to blame them per se, and they're just doing due dilligence for their union members. Blame the headline writer for sensationalizing it if you like, but MLBPA's doing the right thing here.

by cwyers on Mar 19, 2008 10:16 AM CDT reply actions

Maybe.

Name me one player who's currently a free agent who you think is unsigned due to collusion.

I didn't say I thought there was collusion...

...I said I thought that MLBPA, given their mandate and the history of labor relations in baseball, was correct in investigating it. They do this every offseason, and if they're not doing this sort of thing, I fail to see how they can justify their salaries.

Are you 'watching' two today Al?

Big day for Dempster as he'll try to rebound from his disasterous start last time out. If he sucks it up again, can the Cubs afford to trade Marquis?

Yes, I'll be at both games.

Dempster starts the day game. Lieber starts the night game.

collusion

Well there is collusion and there is collusion, I guess it depends on how fehr and company look at it.
1, organized collusion where they all got together at the winter meetings and said let's keep (insert name here) out of the leaugues this year.
2, unorganized collusion where thay are all just thinking the same thing ie: this guy (insert name here) has been bad for the game and now that he is a free agent i really don't want him around

Just because no one wants to hire you...

doesn't necessarily mean there has been collusion. I work in IT, and if I choose to involve myself with known "hackers" who become notorious for abusing network security and it becomes a big public spectacle, then even if I'm innocent, I would expect any prospective employer to give my application a big second thought and choose another candidate over me most of the time.

by santoswoodenlegs on Mar 19, 2008 10:44 AM CDT up reply actions

Exactly.

Bonds may still have baseball talent, but I can't imagine any team wants the headaches that come with him.

That's not collusion, that's just business sense.

by Mordecai on Mar 19, 2008 11:47 AM CDT up reply actions

Yep

People forget that major league coaches like Larry Rothschild, Alan Trammell, Gerald Perry get paid peanuts. In fact very few coaches make north of a $100,000 per season.

by MDBNIU on Mar 19, 2008 11:53 AM CDT up reply actions

Those are mighty fine

peanuts to me. I'll take a $100K nut. I make good money, sure, but apparently it's less than peanuts.

all i know is that if my boss promised me a bonus that nearly doubled my annual salary for going on a business trip and then tried to take it back a few hours before i boarded the plane, i'd go on strike too. it's nice to see the players using their clout to stand with the coaches....

by anormal on Mar 19, 2008 12:01 PM CDT up reply actions

Someone is making money off this trip.

As with everything in MLB, the money can go one of two places - to the on-field product, or to the owners. I seriously don't understand why so many fans reflexively sign with the owners. I guarantee you the coaches have a hell of a lot less money than guys like Selig and Reinsdorf and Angelos.

by cwyers on Mar 19, 2008 12:02 PM CDT up reply actions

I'm not siding with owners,

they are all in it as far as I'm concerned. Seriously. Coaches make $100K? How many of us here make that much? How many of us here make a fraction of that?

I agree that the owners are even MORE greedy. Sure. But there's plenty of nastiness and absurdity to go around when you're talking professional sports. My comment was aimed at the absurd amount of money that the entire industry commands, not at the owners or players per se.

I think what Cubsluver was saying as it all makes he/she sick, and with that I agree.

please mdbiu

they may not make north of 100k but i'm sure they full coverage insurance for themselves and family. they have no expenses on a day to day basis ie. hotel, food, travel plus all the other perks that come with the job. then after all that their paid close to 6 digits a year. i would find that very hard to live on myself. hell normal americans like myself pay a bundle for health insurance, travel to and from work, food etc. baseball in general is f'ing out of hand completely. this pisses me off to no end.

I think your a tad low...

...most major league coaches; pitching coaches, bench coaches etc. make well north of 100K per year.

Granted, they don't make close to what the manager does, but I'll bet your average coach is around 200-250K, with some lower and some higher.

The guys who get the shaft are the trainers, strength coaches etc. They work unbelievable hours (12-14 per day) and they don't hit the 100K mark.

Disagree

Last year there was an article in one of the Chicago papers on this subject. I recall reading that Joey Cora, Harold Baines and Greg Walker of the White Sox made in the $70,000 range while Don Cooper's salary approached $100,000. Statistics for the Milwaukee Brewers were also included and they ran roughly parallel.

When Boston manager Terry Francona is making multi-millions and ditto 90% of the roster I can understand why the coaches on the Red Sox feel slighted by the payout strategy for the Japan trip.

by MDBNIU on Mar 19, 2008 12:14 PM CDT up reply actions

Interesting...

...although I have a real hard time believing Cooper is only making 100K. I also think you will find the bench coaches and pitching coaches to be the highest paid amongst this group. I would think a guy like Rothschild (after turning down Detroit), is making North of 250K. Now, guys like Sinatro and the hitting coach may be much lower, but I think the established guys (especially ones hand picked by a good manager) are doing a little better than what the article indicates.

Francona was quoted in one of today's articles

saying that for the coaches, they're talking about two-fifths of their annual salary, and that's why it's a big deal. If he means the stipend is equal to two-fifths of their existing salary, then the 100K number is exactly correct. If he means that the stipend would be two-fifths of their total compensation including the stipend, then they're getting even less in normal salary (i.e. 60K)

by Damen Jackson on Mar 19, 2008 11:54 AM CDT up reply actions

The script from central casting just arrived....

Keeping Kerry Wood healthy for 6 months is going to be enormously difficult. This is why I think we will see a closer by committee of sorts. Wood will get the most save opportunities (hopefully), but Howry, Hart, Eyre, Marmol and even Wuertz are going to get their chances too.

by MDBNIU on Mar 19, 2008 11:55 AM CDT up reply actions

I'm not against this plan

IMO, the Cubs have other more important needs at this time. If several guys have to do this job, then I am okay with this as long as they are all competent closers.

A bullpen by committee might not be a bad idea. We also don't know how Kerry would bounce back after a day game after a night game.

If Dempster get's lit up again today, maybe he should be considered for the closer role again.
This is very discouraging nonetheless.

Well...

If Kerry can still go back to back this week, I think it's a non-issue. If not, I go back to my initial perception of this situation, which is that Howry needs to be closing. Kerry setting him up. And Marmol giving you an inning or two in middle relief.

he gets on base too much and if we get him it would make DeRosa angry, and seeing as how DeRosa is the heart of this team, that in turn would cause everyone to be very, very sad and the entire team would suffer because it's hard to see a pitch to hit or get the signs from your catcher with tears in your eyes. As Al is wont to point out, we're not really supposed to be accessing Gameday right now anyway. MLB is running it only, if I understand correctly, for data-gathering purposes. Gameday's updates were badly beaten today by an arthritic snail. The snail, 87 years old, seemed unsurprised by the news.

MLB declined to comment on a proposal to rename "Gameday" as "LameDay"

this one's not on TV either, tho...

so, what do we take good out of this one:

2) Fukudome still has the arm and is working on the aim
3) ...
4) Profit!

that seems to be

about it. and I figured out that I get a lot more out of watching or listening to a game than tracking it by stats and reading. Is the second game on the radio though? Even that would be better than LameDay.
