SB Nation 2.0

Hey Everybody, the new and improved site, its awesome.  Just have a few questions.  I was wondering what other sites have converted to the new format.  I found the Halos Heaven (Angels) and Athletics Nation have converted, but on the first post of this site it said that BCB was the fith. Which are the other.

Also, when and how often are other sites going to convert in general?...

And Al, I just got a copy of the "Wrigley Season Ticket 2008".  I'm up through your first article (The Cubs Turn To The Far East), and now Im getting more and more excited by the hour for Opening Day.  lol. I cant wait to buzz through it...

11 days, 14 hours, 42 minutes...

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Glad you're enjoying the book.

If you are not in the Chicago or Phoenix area you can still order one by clicking here.

Yes.

It's in Barnes & Noble and Borders. You can also find it at most Targets, Dominicks, Jewel, Meijer, and Walgreens in the Chicago area.

Just got it.

I joind BCB for a simple reason. I've been a Cub fan for over 20 years. But I haven't been a knowledgeable Cub fan for those 20 years. I've watched the games on WGN in Oklahoma, Colorado and South Carolina. Now that I've moved to Illinois (2002) and attend about 20 games a year I need to step it up. Being a fan isn't enough. So everyone please bare with my. I'm here to learn. Hopefully "Wrigley Season Ticket 2008" is my 1st step to becoming a smarter, more knowledgeable fan.

Got mine thru the website

It only took about 6 days to get to me. Ordered on a Sunday afternoon and I got it that Saturday. Their page that you check your order can be a little concerning. My order still says it is being processed but I have it now. Well worth the price for any Cub fan. The photography is great too. Great job Al...

Thanks for the compliment.

Seriously, I think everyone here, if you don't already have one, would enjoy it. There are articles by several other regular posters here (including ballhawk, Josh77 and cwyers).

I'll second that promotion...

Ok, I confess - as soon as I got my copy, I went straight to my article and read it word for word. Crikey - I'm only human. Pulled a muscle patting myself on the back so hard... ;-)

But since then, I have read the rest of the articles and have to say I'd buy a copy even if I wasn't in there. Seriously. It's good stuff.

Every year it seems I get sucked into buying one of those "preview" annuals, mostly because the cover looked 'cool', or there was some sensational headlines, or the promise of an 'exclusive' story, etc. Basically they're the equivalent of those rags you see while waiting in line at the checkout counter. So you yield to temptation, fork over $5.95, take it home, flip through a few pages, quickly realize that a thousand Mike Downeys banging on a thousand typewriters could probably come up with this crap, and you throw it aside.

Well, for a few dollars more you could have yourself a high quality, very informative, and fun-to-read magazine that you'll treasure for years. Ok, maybe not years, but certainly for the rest of the season.

I HATE the new site

To me it is just a lot of bells and whistles that makes BCB a cookie cutter of other sites. Of course I am old fashioned and prefer interesting words to souped up graphics. I don't feel particularly comfortable posting ( and I have not for a while) and I find it VERY difficult to read. It has crashed by browser a few times and I lost my 'identity" because it was already taken by someone in the A's group. I don't care particularly about not being "Jessica" but the fact that someone in a group I won't even look at prevents me (and others ) from a particular name is to me indicative of the lack of individuality the SB Nation promotes.
I may grow used to it or I may as I do on The Cub Reporter just become a lurker.

Agreed

I couldn't agree with you more on many of those points. Difficult to read, cluttered with graphics...it's a step back as far as I'm concerned.

Mixed bag so far

Some of the new features are impressive and were much needed, but there does seem to be a lot of colorful fluff too. It's probably a generational thing - these days I just try to laugh at the stuff that would otherwise make me crabby. I have this fear of turning into my father...

Seems to me there ought to be some way to 'tag' an ID with a blog/team name or otherwise associate you with a specific blog/team if that's all you want, thereby keeping your original ID. Doesn't seem right that two Jessica's who will most likely never cross paths can't peacefully co-exist in cyberspace.

I did check on another possible ID for you however, and MOW is available... ;-)

Its OK

The only thing I actually LOVE is the C and Z feature. Otherwise it seems to run my computer much much slower and the diaries with a lot of post take forever to load.

Agreed.

Seems like a lot of "fluff" that actually takes away from the baseball talk. The 500 ads and logos really don't do anything for me, besides distract from the conversation. I agree that some of the changes were nice, but BCB just became another cookie cutter site, and I'm in the generation that is suppose to LOVE this kind of stuff :) Oh, well.

by Tangled Up In Blue on Mar 20, 2008 10:07 AM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

THe problem is..

that BCB IS part of a group of websites, the SB Nation, and as such, they want some uniformity in how the sites look and run. You want individuality, start up your own blog and make it look and run your own way (like Al used to have at his old site). You want the greater exposure that being part of a network of site offer, you have to pay the devil his due and conform to the look and feel of what the network wants.

Kasey

I understand the reasoning behing becoming a part of SB Nation and ugrading. I also understand that there are bugs, etc to be worked out. Like I said above, I do enjoy some of the changes. My comment was in no way a reflection on Al, BCB, or SB Nation for that matter. I was just voicing my opinion on the new site.

I'm sure given enough time to play around I will be enjoying this site as much as the old one. Game threads will be the biggest test.

by Tangled Up In Blue on Mar 20, 2008 1:01 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I wasn't trying to knock your opinion...

I just wanted to say being part of a group of websites usually means conforming to the basic look and feel of ALL of the group.

Kasey

I agree. My first post probably had more to do with the fact that my morning sucked and I had to take it out on something ;)

Some of the other posts were spot on, no matter what the site looks like, it's the people, especially Al, that make this site and I don't see that changing anytime soon.

by Tangled Up In Blue on Mar 20, 2008 3:07 PM CDT up reply actions   0 recs

I sorta agree...

There are a lot of bells and whistles added just because they could. I really hate that in any software upgrade. The c and z functions I do like, but for the most part I like it because it is the only thing that makes this site run quicker. For the most part, with all the graphics and such, it loads much much slower than before. I got lucky...kaseyi was reserved for me (as if there was another kaseyi) so I don't have that identity withdrawl problem, but if it wasn't there, I don't know what I would have used. THe new fanposts seems to be getting really cluttered (maybe even from me) but I think it's just because people are trying out the features (like me) I don't really think we need view counts but once again, something was added just because it could be added. Anyway, I will probably stay here because this community is the one Cubs board that most closely resembles my feelings toward the team (even if it is a bit too new age stat heavy for me...at least it isn't taken over by the statheads like some other boards I used to participate on) and hope that things will get better with SB Nation 2.1 (or whatever upgrade they do)

new features

Most of what we added in the new system was based on ideas and requests from all of the SB Nation bloggers. They listened to their communities and passed on a list to us. Additionally, already a daily reader of a few SB Nation blogs, I lived in the whole network of blogs every day for close to a year watching what people asked for and/or complained about in the old system. We tried to stay away from adding features just because we could and focused on responding to what was asked for and what we observed.

As I said in my intro post, we still consider this a beta and so we're using the feedback of everyone to tune and evolve what we've built so far.

Your input on the clutter of the new FanPosts is good. I assume you're talking about the sidebar list right?

good feedback

I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts on the new BCB. We're listening to that input and working hard to improve the experience for everyone as best we can.

This is definitely a bit like moving into a new home after years getting comfortable in the old one. Al has hung up the pictures and brought over the furniture, but it just doesn't feel the same. There is a new look and some things work differently, but hopefully y'all will use the new features to make this place your own. When BCB was first setup it probably looked like the other SB Nation blogs (although there weren't many of them back then) and it took some time for Al and the community to transform it into the unique place it is. Ultimately though it's Al's writing and your participation that make it special. And we want to fix any problems that would be a barrier to that.

Posting - I'm sorry to hear you're frustrated with posting. Are you not comfortable authoring FanPosts or writing comments? We're still working on the FanPost editor so we'd appreciate any input on how we can make that easier.

Reading - What do you find difficult to read? The stories or the comments? We're not done tweaking the design so let us know where you're encountering trouble.

Browser crashes - Is that happening in the big comment threads or everywhere on the site? We're aware of the slow load times on the threads with a large number of comments and we're actively working on solutions to that. We've found it to be a problem primarily in Firefox, so if you're using a different browser and encountering the same issue let us know.

Username - I'm sorry you lost your old name. We tried to be fair about how we determined seniority and who could claim the names. Our goal was to balance the request for easily joining and commenting on many blogs in our network with one login with maintaining respect for the individual communities. And we definitely wanted to make sure you didn't lose your history of comments and diaries. I notice that you haven't claimed your old blog account to associate those with your new name. You can do that right here: http://www.sbnation.com/account/migrate_accounts . Once you do that, it will also show the date you originally joined BCB and your old User ID/#.

I hope you'll remain an active member on BCB and continue giving us this great feedback on the new site.

I'm using Windows XP Professional...

...and Internet Explorer 7.0 here at work, and I've noticed that my browser still (as of yesterday, at least) slows down considerably during really busy threads -- namely, game threads. At home, I use a similar set up, XP and either IE 6.0 or 7.0, and the problem seems worse, though we have an older Dell laptop that can be a bit cranky.

As far as the site goes, I'm still in the process of adjusting myself. I definitely don't hate it. The amount of features and additional info is a bit overwhelming, but I know from dealing with tech upgrades in the course of my job that what seems strange and unwieldy today can quickly become commonplace and easy-to-use tomorrow. I urge patience.

One question, just out of curiousity: Was a live chat feature ever discussed or considered? I always thought that, for game threads at least, this could be a lot of fun.`

thanks for the info

we're working on improving the performance in the busy threads

as for the chat we discussed that, but we wanted everyone to try a game thread with the new auto-updating comments first. using the threaded format allows side conversations to happen even while people are doing play by play, etc.

Are you guys aware

of the volume of posts during some regular season games? Add the ease with which you can post graphics with this new site, and I would be surprised if the site doesn't grind to a halt.

That's my only concern so far, however. Love the C and Z keys for keeping up with new comments where ever they are on the page. I like the popup that indicates who the poster is that just made a new post as well.

we are aware

in fact we tested the performance of our commenting system using an old BCB game thread. as usual though nothing beats getting the feedback from real world use. we clearly still need to tune it.

however, I think your point about the ease of including images is a good one. already we've seen people linking to large images that can slow the page quite a bit.

I'm "the computer guy" in my office,

and i run into a lot of users who just aren't aware of the fact that graphics can vary in size drastically. Maybe some kind of limit (soft or hard) would be the answer. Or at least some kind of popup making the poster aware that he is trying to post something that will be very difficult for the site to handle.

As the biggest abuser of picture posts...

I'd have to agree with BlueSox here. I make a conscious effort to keep the pics to a reasonable size byte and pixel wise. I would agree that including a "hard-coded" limit on graphics posted in the "fanposts" would be a good idea. Just sayin'

Most of the above

As folks from the old site not to mention Al's original site will tell you I am very comfortable posting
but I find the new site very busy and overloaded. I really don't need for instance the "highlighted"posts. I just prefer to read a diary or fan post or whatever it is called. I enjoy a few graphics but I don't need them on every post or line. I am generally a luddite anyway . I don't even like night games so maybe the blog world has passed me by. I prefer simple blogs to hang out with friends old and new and exchage Cubs news and views. There are other blogs I just lurk on ( Like The Cub Reporter) which for different reasons ( BCB poll showed men outnumbered women 10-1 there it is 100-0) as I don't feel comfortable posting , but here it is a pain to read

FYI for example I was in the middle of writing this when up popped a window informing that
someone had just put up a new post. I really, really don't need that. I can just check later and
see for myself.
As for the crashes. It usually happens when I first try to go to the site but sometimes while I am read ing but it could just be the office computer. Also did not get that I was suppossed to "link" to my old account since I had to have a "new' name.

thanks for the answers

I didn't word the question about posting very well. What I meant to ask is: which of our editors are you not comfortable using - the comment form or the FanPost form?

By highlighted posts do you mean the Recommended FanPosts list?

It can be a little disorienting when you're writing a comment and the auto-updating continues to run. We'll take a look at how we can make that less obtrusive and distracting when you have the comment form open.

We can definitely do a better job of explaining how to link your old account to a new name. Sorry that was explained better when you were creating your SB Nation account.

did you try the forgot password link?

When you're logged in, visit the the claim old blogs screen, choose the name of the blog and enter the username and password for that old blog account.

If that doesn't work (or you forgot your password), try clicking the Forgot Password link on that claim page. There, choose the blog you're trying to claim an account from and enter the email address you used when signing up. The system should send you the correct password (don't forget to check your spam folder. If that doesn't work, contact us at bugreport@sbnation.com and we'll try to help you out.

We're continuing to try make signup / account claiming easier, so we'd appreciate any feedback. Thanks for your patience as we work out the kinks.

Why use C when you can Z?

I'm guessing the "C" feature came first - and it's a sweet feature. Being able to navigate from new comment to the next new comment is great. In the old BCB, I had to set up a search on "[new" and do a "Find Next" each time to do the same thing - it was a pain.

I'm also guessing that late at night, after a six-pack of Jolt and 2 or 3 cold pizzas, somebody from the development team yelled "Eureka!" and figured out how to mark that new comment as being read during the navigation. Thus "Z" was born.

IMO, Z is much better than C so my question is why keep C around? Anyone have an example of why you'd want to navigate through the unread comments and KEEP them unread? The only thing I could figure is so you could come back to it later, but that logic just seemed kind of weak to me. Any better arguments out there?

Obviously this isn't a big deal in the grand scheme of 2.0. Still, for those of us with limited mental capacity, it might be an improvement if we had one less feature to think about. Or even better, we could replace that feature in our mental toolkit with another one that did something significantly different - then we'd be dangerous...

Lou Brown: "My kinda team, Charlie, my kinda team..."

by ballhawk on Mar 20, 2008 2:16 PM CDT reply actions   0 recs

you're close.

Most of us drink Dr. Pepper (aka 'Slurm') and pretzels. I have a soft spot for Rock Star.

Originally, pressing C served to both jump to the next comment and unmark it (as Z now does). Our dev team - and many members of Athletics Nation - found that this assumed too much. People wanted the option to unmark or not. So we changed the behavior and paired C with X, as is currently explained above every comments thread. Then we added SHIFT-C so you could jump backward and forward and unmark as you choose.

And someone had the Slurm-inspired idea to make R reply to the current comment. Which we still think is sweet. Power to the people.

So all that worked for a while... but at the expense of freedom came too many keystrokes. Most of the time, as you said, I just want to power through comments, leaving them unmarked in my wake. So we added the Z key and restored the Zorro no-holds-barred power to slice through comments at a mile a minute.

BUT, ballhawk (if I may call you ballhawk) I still find that sometimes I want to leave a comment marked so to come back to it later. Sometimes I want to reply to a few different comments, but I don't have time right now. So I leave them marked and C cycle through them to reply individually when I get a chance.

Case in point, 3 minutes ago the new comment from BlueSox popped in below. I pressed C to jump down there, and C again to jump back up here once I'd read it.

In any case, I do appreciate your point about streamlining our mental toolkits. If we implement more key-fu we'll need to keep a short list, for sure. Anyway, thanks for your ideas and for your patience as we sort out what works best for everyone.

I have to admit....

... I wasn't a fan of the keyboard shortcuts at first myself. But I have come to appreciate them. Makes it real easy for me to get through a long game thread after I get back from the game!

I like C

because I like to whip through the new comments quickly before-hand and use both C and Z: Z to clear the short, simple posts, C to allow the longer/interesting posts to remain highlighted. Then back to Z while I read through the longer posts.
