More Cubs-Related Media Sensationalism
While I want Marquis traded, I don't agree with or want this:
"The expectation is that the Cubs will eventually ship off starter Jason Marquis to Boston for center fielder Coco Crisp. Chicago has clearly soured on Felix Pie. It wouldn't be a surprise to see Pie included in the Brian Roberts deal with Baltimore."
Soured on Pie? Who says? I'm sure there are private sentiments about his upside and abilities, but no one has talked "sour" during the spring.
Why does the national media continue to sensationalize Cubs-related happenings? It's like a new sport. -TL

I'm going to get blasted for this but
I'm not sold on Pie yet. I'd rather see a veteran player with major league experience patroling CF at Wrigley.

we cant have an all star
at every position. pie's defense should be good enough to warrant him a starting spot.

Dusty, please stop posting here
Dusty, you are the Reds' manager now. Please go post to their web sites about your veteran bs. And stop hiding behind fake screen names. We know it is you.

If
Pie can stay consistant and continue to do what he did today then I'll retract all statements.

I'm not against acquiring a backup.
But I don't want to see the team acquire Coco Crisp. I want to see Pie as the everyday center-fielder and see once and for all what he can do. Plus, with Soriano in LF, I like the fact that Pie covers a lot of ground in center. This guy has been the organization most hyped prospect for about three years now. Let him play, and see what he can do. If he's hovering around the .200 mark at the end of May, then we'll re-think that. But I think that is very unlikely.

I'm all for Pie succeeding.
But the Cubs haven't had much luck experimenting rookies in CF. I guess you have to get your playing time in somehow. Gotta start somewhere. This is a pretty important year and I wish there was no question about the future of CF.

there is a reason to hype a prospect and there is a reason to make a decision
Hyping a prospects happens, both by itself and by the marketing machinery, the other is making a decision on whether the player can stick and perform or might be better served developing himself somewhere else.
The Cubs are not unlike NYY, NTM, Boston and even LAD, SF in developing everyday position players, these teams rarely develop an everyday star. The reason possibly is that the organization, the media and fans cannot afford the patience to allow a player to develop like than can in environments like Milwaukee, Minnesota, Oakland, Cincinnati, KC, Denver et cetera.....
Hyping a prospect is part of a trade value thing. So....in that vein I can care less if Pie per se develops or doesn't, sure it is a nice story, the same for Choi or Patterson, the thing is can Pie develop into a bona fide MLB player....if there is a genuine question, is there a fundamental hole in his game? I am not that informed, smart, or clued in, but Piniella and Hendry are.....and if the hole in the Cubs lineup is a genuine lead off hitter and Pie has a real question....let him go and get a CF'er.
Piniella: "This is a tougher job than I thought it would be, I'm going to be honest with you."
Thats kinda my argument. Another 'experement' in the Cubs CF to start the season?

To play devil's advocate...
You must think that this year the Cubs are much improved over last year offensively. If that means the sole addition of Fukudome to the lineup, so be it. But I think in the NL Central, the Cubs can afford to let someone like Pie develop. I'm sure there are plenty of 8 hole hitters in the NL that are less talented and worse off than Pie. Let's give him a legitimate shot, and see what's what. Didn't the Cubs win the division last year with Jacques Jones in CF? I think this is an upgrade defensively and whatever offense he can provide will be a plus.
I agree...
...but I don't think they will go as long as most people think. IMO, Pie is going to get 30-40 games to show what he can do when the games matter.

I didnt think of that. Might as well let him get his swings in knowing the team should be playing well.

soured on Pie?
what's this guy drinking, because I want some...

Troy Renck
is constantly trying to "one-up" Tracy Ringolsby, the HOF writer who works for the other Denver paper. In truth, neither one of them prints much truth. In fact, the fact that he wrote that the Crisp-Marquis trade was likely makes me sure that it won't happen.
"I've never complained about it. I'm thankful to have a jersey." Mark DeRosa, 22 Aug 2007
Soured...
...is not the right way to put it. Clearly, the Cubs want Pie to succeed and become a player they have no problem putting out there against lefties or righties.
With that said, I think it would be naive to not think, both Piniella and Hendry both know, there is a chance Pie does not succeed in 08, and CF is the one position they are preparing for this possibility.

Pie
has hit a ton since recovering from surgery. Defensively he's the best center fielder the Cubs have had in several generations. I think he's ready, and is going to hit. Sit him occasionally against tough lefties, but he's definitely the man in cf.
