Well, Roberts new or not, this is news to me, I'm going to post it. Looks like DeRosa's got second all to himself, barring some unforseen events:

It ain't over till...
...the chubby lady sings, but I agree, if it doesn't go down this week, it means Andy is either asking for too much, or he didn't like the recent reports from his scouts.
I don't quite get it, because the O's have no use for Roberts in their rebuilding process. If they don't trade him now, they would be banking on a bidding war at the trade deadline.
I'll bet one thing, Roberts is not going to be a happy camper, and that may be one thing that breathes last second life back into this thing.

I dunno.
Roberts is making a lot of money to play baseball, and has gotten pretty much forgiven for whatever role he played in the Mitchell Report.
I think he'll be just fine. He may be traded by July -- or not.

My friend..
they're not banking on anything. He's got a very affordable contract, and Angelos likes him. He can stay, and be a familiar face during the transition. Or go in the right deal, and Peter can say to the fan base "look at our haul". If they had a lick of sense, the Orioles would have dumped everyone over 25 off their books already. Millar. Hernandez. Mora. I mean, why the hell is Huff still with that team? Even if you had to eat money. Like people aren't looking for corner men right now.
Sigh...The sad thing is that if Roberts really was an Angelos favorite, he wouldn't put a player heading toward the tail end of his career thru 100 loss rebuilding seasons.
by Damen Jackson on Mar 24, 2008 7:57 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
If they are not banking...
...on getting the best value for Roberts as is possible, they are stupid, because the longer the clock ticks on his contract, his value goes down not up. His value is at it's peak right now. He is coming off a great year and has some time left on a relatively affordable deal.
I don't care for McPhail, but he isn't that stupid. I don't know what kind of role Angelos is playing in all this, but if he respects Roberts as much as is reported, you would think he would respect his wishes to some degree.
Bottom line, it makes little sense for the O's to hold onto Roberts with their plan to rebuild.

And I Will Add...
...that the Cubs have several pieces that fit the O's needs - namely youth, pitching, 2B and SS.

Sense is irrelevant...
I've heard from two media sources that the Cubs made an offer a few weeks ago, good enough that the Orioles baseball people were ready to sign off on it. And Angelos personally nixed it.
Doesn't make sense. And yet here we are. Welcome to Baltimore.
by Damen Jackson on Mar 24, 2008 9:56 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Could be...
...and I guess the question is this; will Roberts go to Angelos and have the same discussion he has had with the media (he doesn't want to be part of a rebuilding process)?
If what you say is true, that could be the key.

Unless Macphail or Hendry
are quoted in this article and are the sources for this deal being dead, this is just another worthless rumor.
by lemon20pie on Mar 24, 2008 6:36 PM CDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed
Every assertion in this thread has an equal and opposite assertion, but that's all they are. For example, Damen says above that he heard from two different media sources that Angelos nixed a deal. However, there are other "media sources" that deny that, or quote one of the front offices as denying that. Until, as MPH says, Hendry draws a line under it publicly (which he will definitely do if the deal collapses), this (i.e., Rosenthal's blurb) is worth as much as our own uninformed conjecture.

Now what?
Scenario 1
The Orioles could fold. Remember, they were holding out for Jeff Clement in the Bedard trade as well. With Hendry saying, "It's off," they may say, "Ok, we'll take the previous deal."
Scenario 2
The O's keep Roberts and the Cubs add no lefty/speedy IFs.
Scenario 3
The Cubs get an inferior lefty/speedy IF option. A Marquis-Felipe Lopez trade might make sense, if the Nats decide they need innings.
Which do you all think will happen?

I like
Murton becuase from what I've seen he's old school. Busts his butt on every play. Sooo many high paid players half-assig it, not running out ground balls and hot dogging routine flies. Not Murton. I still say he tries too hard sometimes and over hustles which leads to fielding mistakes. The LAST thing a coach should need to tell a major league is to play hard. From what I've seen Murton plays hard. I know he's not the best player but I like him anyway.

Sometimes the best trades
are the ones not made. Jacque Jones was as good as gone after a miserable 1st 1/2 last year. Yet instead of going to the Marlins, Hendry didn't make a trade just for the sake of making a trade. Jacque rebounded with a great 2nd 1/2.
Hopefully Derosa will also respond in kind....

Quick Question
Has anyone besides Rosenthal (and Al on behalf of Deep Goat) reported something similar?

I'm pretty sure I read something similar
in one of the ESPN blogs, but I can't remember if it was Gammons, Stark, or Olney.
by DGU on Mar 24, 2008 11:54 PM CDT up reply actions 0 recs
Even with no one reporting...
...you could have guessed (after all this time) there was an impasse in regards to which players would be involved. In that sense, its no surprise this is where it is at.
The key now is whether both sides have truely made their best offers, or if there is motivation to make one last adjustment. I still think they are going to make one more run at this thing because you have two willing parties; one who wants the player and one who wants to trade him for prospects.
If this dies, it dies, but IMO, it will be because McPhail's latest reports from his scouts have been below what they expected and now he is asking for something Hendry does not want to give.

So, Does Cintron Make The Team?
And start the season on the DL with Fontenot getting the call as the replacement?
And, when the Cubs get Reed Johnson, does this mean Murton goes to AAA Iowa?
Right now, I have a bench of: Blanco, Cedeño, Cintron, Murton, and Ward.

Cedeno & Cintron
basically offer the same thing, so I'd think one of them would go...likely Cedeno to AAA, cause Cintron is a little more versatile, and a little less "challenged" on the basepaths.
Johnson is scrappy, and hit well before last year...but to me Murton has earned a spot.
