Open Thread: Cubs vs. Giants, Tuesday 3/25, 3:05 CT

SCOTTSDALE, Arizona -- The Giants have the worst record in all of baseball this spring -- 8-19. While spring records are not necessarily predictors of regular season records, for the Giants, I think it will be. This is a potential 100-loss team.

All of this is a way of saying that if there's any team against whom Rich Hill might get his act together, it's the Giants. Hill will face the Giants' Jonathan Sanchez, who has a 5.63 ERA in 16 spring innings, allowing 21 hits and 8 walks.

Morning notes:

Once again today, you can find the game on CSN Chicago, and MLB.com radio at the MLB.com Mediacenter.

MLB.com Gameday (and yes, I've seen the "new" Gameday for the Red Sox/A's game this morning, and it's awful. As long as they keep the "2007" version active, I'll be posting that version.)

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Mariotti column

Complete piece of crap. I can't believe they pay him to write that BS...

by WartburgCub on Mar 25, 2008 10:34 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Don't let him get to you.

That column is not a serious piece of work. It is written purely to ruffle feathers. It's like a "Star" or "National Enquirer" piece.

Wow, so true.

I don't believe that nonsense. It's one thing to back something like that up with facts and statistics, but he just blabbers on and on about nothing. Whatever.

That Mariotti piece is garbage

But I agree with his sentiment that this team isn't good enough to win the NL Division. At this exact moment anyway. That doesn't mean that the Cubs won't make a move or 2 before the trade deadline, but right now, no way is this team good enough to win the NL DIvision crown. It's obviously capable of making the playoffs but it won't be easy. Brewers and Cubs are as evenly matched right now as it can get and it's going to be a dogfight, which will be fun. This season will be fun no doubt. If that's all you really expect out of a season, than this will be a great season for you. If you expect more, much more out of a Chicago Cubs season, than it'll be a fun season but ultimately end in disappointment.

by lemon20pie on Mar 25, 2008 1:00 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I guess I'm confused...

Are you saying that the Cubs aren't good enough to win the NL Central or the NL pennant?

by WartburgCub on Mar 25, 2008 7:08 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

He must mean the NL Pennant.

The Cubs should win the division by defualt based on how bad the other teams are and the Brewers pitching injuries.

Hey Mariotti! Tell Huston to go find the meatball he threw to Brandon Moss in the top of the 9th. It’s probably somewhere out on the street.

Man are those infielders pampered

Sori, Felix, and Dome have to slog through a soggy outfield while the infielders have a tent over their heads? I guess Theriot and DeRosa burn easily, what with all that sun we're going to have on Opening Day... ;-)

And what's with the sprinklers going - they just spent all weekend carting off the snow that was covering the field, and now they're watering the outfield? Crazy, man...

Jay Mariotti

sinks to a new low with this one (if that is even possible). Mariotti professing to be the source of all that is true about the Cubs makes me sick. He overreacts more than most true Cub fans. A track record means nothing to him. I am at a loss for words.

by gwood on Mar 25, 2008 10:37 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

meant to say

he overreacts more than a lost of Cub fans. I apparently got influenced by his article and started typing in absolutes. I need to go wash my fingers off with soap, excuse me.

by gwood on Mar 25, 2008 10:43 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

a total moron....

..a column that a 6th grader could write with stunning insights into the Cubs hopes such as;

You say the Cubs have an awesome lineup. I say they do as long as Derrek Lee doesn't remain a doubles hitter, Alfonso Soriano rips fastballs instead of muscles and Aramis Ramirez is kept away from secret cockfighting arenas

Yes Eddie Munster, if A-Ram stays away from cockfighting, the Cubs will win the WS. What analysis! way to really give the reader of the Sun Times pamphlet some real insight.

Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls.

by JB 23 on Mar 25, 2008 11:00 AM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

The same

could easily say these things about any teams best three hitters. If any teams best three hitters don't perform as expected the team will suffer.

Mariotti is simply saying that as long as Derrek, Soriano, and Ramirez hit, the Cubs will be fine. No s&^t, really? Can i get paid to write such insightful sports columns.

Snow

I wish they would just push the start of the season back a week and for the first 2 series of the season have them in dome/warm weather cities. This would effectively push back the start of the season in cold cities by 2 weeks. I think all players and most fans would agree. I haven't gone through the schedule and figured out exactly how to accomplish this but I'm sure the MLB brains can figure it out.

They tried that

In the late '70s or early '80s, MLB tried scheduling as many games as possible in Calif., Tex, Atl, and domes. Weather-wise, it worked out fine. The problem is that no team wants a preponderence of home games in April, as it is the poorest month attendance-wise. The Calif. teams complained loudly about the lost revenue, and the experiment was scrapped.

The only reason

I can think the sprinklers would be on is cuz of the new drainage system. Maybe it took all the water away and their watering now to get a little more growth out of the grass so they can cut whats been damaged on top. No idea. Maybe they're testing the water ssytem to make sure nothing froze and broke.

That is the world we live in, and I just abstain from reading guys like Marriotti or Downey. Neither of those guys know diddly about baseball, so they have no choice than to be outlandish in what they write. I do admit, Rogers is someone I read on occasion for strictly the comedic value.

the principle of the thing

Mariotti's formula for this column - taking the sensational, irrational, minority opinions of a few in a group and characterizing all of the group members as holding said opinions - is such prejudiced and unethical journalism that it makes me sick. I don't care if I see it in a sports column, a hard news story or a freaking restaurant review, or if he wrote the same style of column about White Sox, Cards, or even Yankees fans. Blatant prejudice combined with sensationalism is intolerable.

"These are the saddest of possible words: Tinker to Evers to Chance."

by bluebythebook on Mar 25, 2008 11:46 AM CDT reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Like so many others in sports journalism....

Marriotti basically plays a role in the Chicago media. He is more like a sports version of a Hollywood gossip columnist. If you listen to him on "Around the Horn", he is actually a sharp guy and knows what he's talking about where sports are concerned. But his columns seem to be written strictly to piss people off, and every day he has a new target. For a long time he has been Ozzie Guillen's biggest critic (for that, I almost forgive him all his other bad traits) but he also hammers Lovie Smith, Rex Grossman, and the entire Bulls organization every chance he gets, and of course, he was Dusty Baker's biggest critic too. I take him with a grain of salt. He is an entertainment columnist, and I think his success is probably judged in the news room of the Sun-Times by how much negative response he generates, and I'm completely serious when I say that. The more negative reaction he gets, the more he is doing his job.

Very well said...

...to say he is dumb is not the right read. The man simply has chosen (as has his paper) for him to write stuff that garners as much fan reaction as is possible. I would wager that half the stuff he writes is not what he actually believes, but is what gets himself and paper the attention they desire.

I agree and understand where you're coming from. It just bothers me that mainstream news has sunk to that level of sensational BS. I hate seeing it, and I hate people gobbling it up and asking for seconds - though, I admit gobbling it up and complaining about it is almost just as bad. I usually avoid reading any of his or the other sports opinion columns in both papers just to avoid all the BS, but today I clicked for some reason and then remembered why I try not to do that.

Sending him to AAA is not an option. I imagine Cedeno makes the 25 man roster and I'm not sure how the signing of Johnson would effect Cedeno's roster spot.

by Keystone80435 on Mar 25, 2008 1:06 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Agreed...

I said elsewhere that I think Cedeno competes with Cintron for one of the backup IF spots. I think Fontenot and Patterson are competing for the other spot. That gives us a RH option and a LH option backing up in the middle IF. I think Cedeno (because he's out of options) and Fontenot (because Lou likes him more) get the jobs.

by SouthernCub on Mar 25, 2008 1:06 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I think it's entirely possible too

that Cintron opens the season on the DL and the Cubs will get a good look at Patterson for a couple weeks.

by lemon20pie on Mar 25, 2008 1:09 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not sure how that works...

The reason I see Cintron and Cedeno battling for a spot is because they both can bat RH. The reason I saw Fontenot and Patterson battling for a spot is because Patterson is that they are both LH.

Cintron can be sent to AAA, since he's on a minor league contract. If you meant Cedeno starting on the DL, that'd make sense as a possibility I guess.

by SouthernCub on Mar 25, 2008 1:12 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'm drunk......and it shows.....

by Keystone80435 on Mar 25, 2008 12:37 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Can't send Cedeno down...

he's out of options. Either Cedeno makes the roster or we have to trade him.

Johnson serves as the backup to Pie in CF AND replaces Murton on the roster. We aren't going to carry six OF. We'll have two guys who can play the middle IF (likely to be one of Patterson/Fontenot and one of Cedeno/Cintron), a backup catcher (Blanco), a backup 1B/OF (Ward), and a backup OF. The backup OF could have been Murton if Cedeno could have won the CF backup job. But since Cedeno won't be in the OF, Murton is out of luck here.

by SouthernCub on Mar 25, 2008 1:03 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Probably both...

with Blanco, Ward, and Johnson in place, that leaves Cedeno, Cintron, Patterson, Fontenot, and Murton to battle for two spots. Johnson and Ward can cover the backup corner OF spots (as can DeRosa in a pinch), so it seems unnecessary to carry a 6th OF. So Johnson effectively bumps Murton to AAA. At the same time, Johnson is the insurance for Pie, as he backs up in CF and may be the RH platoon partner for Pie (if necessary).

Murton's only realistic shot at a roster spot was if Cedeno could prove himself as a capable option in CF. That would have allowed Murton to be the RH option as the 5th OF. Bringing in a pure OF like Johnson makes Murton completely expendable.

by SouthernCub on Mar 25, 2008 1:00 PM CDT to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

A vote of confidence for Pie

As we all saw yesterday, he's crazy fast and can get to almost every ball before it hits the ground or right after it does. He's learning the fundamentals of getting on base - drag bunts, plate discipline and he's displayed great talent at hitting the ball in various spots. He is a YOUNG kid and was prone to nervousness his first season. I do think that because of his friendship with Soriano, he may have tried to emulate him a little bit in that loopy swing he showed sometimes. Fortunately, someone seems to have said something and knocked some sense into him as we've been seeing a far more compact and effective swing. His legs will stretch doubles into triples like the one which won the game yesterday.

Another thing I want to point out - I don't know if anyone remembers this, but last year at the beginning of the season he threw a FROZEN ROPE to throw someone out at home plate. That was my Pie awakening. He's gonna have quite a nice highlight reel before his career is done.

If someone has a clip of that frozen rope, let me know and I'll start compiling that highlight reel.

If this is true, I really like this signing, getting a good clubhouse guy, from the way it sounds. a career .281 hitter with a pretty solid arm, and we don't have to give up any of our prospects for him.

Right keystone

That's what I like about this signing more than anything. I don't mind the addition of Johnson and I imagine he's aware that he simply will be the 4th OF. I would've liked the addition of Devanon too though. I watch a lot of Angel games and he's a gamer and plays a very good Defensive CF. I'm Ok with Johnson though.

I'm sure

the Cubs gave Johnson a physical to know how healthy he is or not. The Blue Jays had Shannon Stewart and Matt Stairs to play LF, if they cut him by Saturday they wouldn't had to pay most of his salary so they did.

Keith Law blogs on Cubs

Insider piece, so no link. General gist:
- KL thinks Wood as the closer is just right and that the Cubs may have the best 'pen in the league.
- After watching Dome in BP, he thinks there's a good chance the Bobby Abreu comp holds water
- He gives a good analysis of Pie's swing
- Murton is "being wasted on the Cubs' bench"

All in all, it's worth the read.

Is that speculation?

...or is is real?

For some reason I thought the Cubs were in "win now" mode. Wouldn't it make more sense to get a sub-par, has-been center fielder with a huge contract?

I'm sorry if that sounded snooty, but I think it would be a huge shame to give up on Murton who is cheap, entering the early part of his prime, and lets face it, red headed.

Not really.

I think saying Soriano was moved to left because of the pulled hamstring is an oversimplification. Alfonso is simply more comfortable in left. Plus, the injury you're referring to is Soriano's quad pull, which happened much later in the season, long after he'd been moved to left.

If he is an above average player...

...he will get his chance. It probably won't be with the Cubs, but if he is as good as most think, someone will deal for him.

With Hendry usually doing all he can to help out players to get a chance with another team, you have to ask yourself why no one has tried to scoop him up? Either Hendry is out of his mind in what he is asking in return for him, or other teams just don't value him the same way many on this board do.

Murton plays better when he's a starter, and in LF

It was frustrating watching him stop-start-go-stop with Floyd in right last year, where he also looked uncomfortable defensively, and on the Iowa shuttle. He's also not a great pinch hitter. But he has no reason to play in the minors. I hoped his end with the Cubs would come from a trade to a team that wanted him, rather than getting bumped by a 4th outfielder that was released by another team.

Now, I'm not going to start lobbying for Murton to get more playing time, or saying we should not have gotten Johnson. But Murton is one of these guys you just want to root for. Can't help it. I have to agree with Sue. The Cubs aren't going to have room for him, but that doesn't change the fact that I want him to succeed. I wish he would have turned into a young Mickey Mantle. Hill's spot in the rotation would still not be locked up. He hasn't had some tough-luck losses, he was been flat-out putrid. There is no other word. Dempster and Marquis pitched well. They earned it. Hill has not pitched well, and if he gets shelled today against a very bad offense, I would go with Lieber was my fifth starter. Simple as that. I know it won't happen, but it should. Hopefully Hill throws a great game today, and that's the end of these worries.
