Call The Angels!

News item: Kelvim Escobar is out indefinitely.

This means the Angels are down their top two starters from last year.

Maybe they'd take Marquis or Dempster.

Discuss.

Tough break for the Angels

it would be nice if they did take marquis/dempster off our hands though

Aramis Ramirez- NL MVP
Kosuke Fukudome- NL ROY
Carlos Marmol- Rolaids Relief Man

Wouldn't be surprised

if Hendry's already on the phone with them. Who would you rather see leave, Marquis or Dempster?

I vote for Marquis. At least Dempster can be somewhat useful in the pen.

Dempster

Marquis is a more valuable 5th starter IMO. Innings innings and more innings. Ill take 12 wins from him again

Also,

We have enough guys for the pen, and more on the way.

Marquis?

Marquis for Willits? :) I like that idea.

I don't think there's much to talk about...

the Rangers are middling, and tthe Mariners still have much to prove. I don't think they feel the need to do anything hasty.

I think Hendry's playing it cool

Spring training numbers notwithstanding, Marquis is still a second-half time bomb that's ticking, and Dempster certainly hasn't proven himself as a starter. So Hendry can't afford to be chasing ambulances here. I doubt he's been on the phone already - it's not like the Angels haven't seen the Cubs this year. They know what we have. I think Hendry doesn't want to appear too eager nor tip his hand too much, because frankly there's not much there. But that's okay...

...because sometimes nothing can be a real cool hand.

I'm sure the Angels are aware that the Cubs...

...have a pitching surplus. They could be interested in Marquis, Dempster or even Marshall. Or maybe with Claudio Vargas's release, they sign him instead. But there have been a lot of scouts following the Cubs this spring, and not all of them work for Baltimore.

Well

What pieces that the Angels still have in play would you be looking to pull in if you were Hendry?

Angels SSs

I live in Cedar Rapids where the Angels Low A team plays and I've seen some of these guys quite a bit. From what I saw first hand I am kind of surprised that Brandon Wood hasn't done better; he looked like he couldn't miss when he was here. I'd still take a flyer on him if he was part of some package....

by jking79 on Mar 26, 2008 8:36 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I saw quite a bit of Wood

a couple years ago when he was playing AA for the Travelers here in Little Rock. He can hit a ton and wasn't all that bad of a SS. I think he's probably about a year away, but could do better for an NL team in the majors.

Or

they'll just break camp with Nick Adenhart, who right now is better than Marquis or Dempster.

They've still got a rotation of Weaver, Garland, Saunders, Santana and either Dustin Mosely or Adenhart. OK, Mosely isn't any good and the first four don't strike fear into the hearts of batters like Lackey and Escobar, but they're good enough to hold down the fort until Lackey or Escobar get back.

Besides, every time Hendry calls the Angels, the Angels just keep asking for Aramis Ramirez.

Maybe they'd take Marquis AND Dempster. Hey, I can dream, can't I?

by Rev Gunia on Mar 26, 2008 7:35 AM CDT   0 recs

okay...I will take Vlad for Dempster..

Seriously, I would happily trade Dempster for value but would prefer to wait a bit...

I think he is a wolf in sheeps clothing.

Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls.

by JB 23 on Mar 26, 2008 8:09 AM CDT   0 recs

I think Hendry should be looking to package...

Dempster/Murton or Dempster/Derosa.

First off, with Dempster, we already have a surplus of SPs and if no other teams are asking for him in that capacity that should tell you something. He has not been able to make it much past the 4th inning all spring. The Cubs have done him enough favors.

With trading Murton, I think there would be no objections.

Now onto Derosa, he should have some value as a starting 2b or a superutility guy. However, he is easily replaced by our all-star AAA infield options at a much lower cost. Mainly I'm sick of watching Derosa swing out of his shoes in all the wrong situations. He really gives it the home run cut every time runners are on base. I'd rather see Fontenot man 2nd with Cedeno backing 3rd.

by Jerry Mumphrey on Mar 26, 2008 9:38 AM CDT   0 recs

Seriously?

Mike Fontenot is not good enough to be a regular player. Why would you want him in there instead of DeRosa?

And what would you suggest the Cubs obtain for "Dempster/DeRosa"?

I don't know, put a bow around them and a sign that says "limited time only"

I'm just not high on either of those two. With Dempster it's the walks and with Derosa it's the K's with RISP. I figure everyone could use a Derosa and his numbers look good enough. It just bothers me that I keep hearing other teams' announcers make fun of his tendency to hack when the time is most inopportune.

by Jerry Mumphrey on Mar 26, 2008 10:33 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

Wow...

... Dempster/Murton, ok. DeRosa? No way.

Jacque Jones is gone, and I doubt Ivan DeJesus would mind this!

Did you forget

that DeRosa hit .290+ and was third on the Cubs in RBI? That without him we wouldn't have survived Soriano and Rameriz' injuries?

by crazymountain on Mar 29, 2008 10:00 AM CDT to parent up   0 recs

I don't know what will happen...

...but I really don't think Lou wants to rely on Marquis for very long. You could see Lou's frustration with him last year, and I believe he made up his mind on him a while ago.

What Marquis did or didn't do in ST doesn't really mean much. His track record during games that count is well established, and this is why Hendry has not been able to move him as of yet. His contract is another barrier, and the Cubs will end up eating some of it in the end.
