Why be so hasty to unload Marquis?
- He's not entirely ineffective. The fact that he was left off two playoff rosters is completely invalid criticism.
- As has been shown countless times (most recently by the '07 Phillies and '08 Brewers); there simply is no such thing as a starting pitching surplus. Remember how uncannily healthy our starters were last year? Don't count on it again.
- Lieber makes a lot of sense as a swing man. Could a few starts down the stretch (quasi 6-man rotation) alleviate some of Jason's inevitable downturn? We also have an entirely legit long reliever in in the bullpen, which is probably good for 1-2 wins over Gallagher/Petrick.
Other notes:
- Simply being named a starter will in no way increase Marquis' trade value. If a team were interested they'd watch him.
- In one season Lou has proven he's there to do what's best for the team, and what's best for a win--both long and short term. You can't place too much emphasis on spring training numbers for a veteran pitcher. No one will ever say there's a 20-win season hidden in his arm, and Lou knows that and still likes their chances with him in the rotation.
I realize this post is a couple days late but I don't see the cause for panic? He threw exactly how everyone could have expected last year (even put together some outstanding games when we needed them most) and I didn't see everyone reacting this violently then. Did everyone take his comment about wanting to be a starter that personally?

Agreed
I don't see all three of the Lieber/Marquis/Dempster trio working out--I'd like to have some insurance.
Plus, everyone wants starting pitching at the trade deadline. Some team will be desperate enough to ignore the salary and the second half collapses.
I'm not saying I wouldn't trade him now for something the Cubs could use, but I don't see the need to get rid of him ASAP, for any price within reason. Unless, of course, he really has become a clubhouse cancer.

His contract
Realistically his contract is not that bad. Unfortunately it just came in a year in which starting pitching was highly overvalued. This season most teams opted to trade for starters and didn't overvalue pitchers like Lohse and Fogg. It should be noted that most people expected both of those pitchers to receive contracts roughly equal to or in excess of what Marquis got last year. If that had happened, you'd see fewer complaints.

your comments are spot on..
..there should be no hurry to unload any pitching. Its worth its weight in gold.
With Marquis history of strong starts, ride the hot hand and perhaps save Leibers arm for later in the season. (remember he only pitched 71 innings last year)
Lou knows what he's doing here...no worries
Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls.

I agree with you 100%
I also think Lou is thinking long term. Sure we could trade all our "extra" talent away, but when someone gets injured it's nice to know Lieber is there. Plus a 38 yr old isn't going to be pitching succesfully for much longer, so why crown him as a starter, trade Marquis and then next season probably start someone who isn't ready? I like Lou's move here.

He was left off the cubs last year, I believe, and the Cardinals the year before. However, I recall seeing some discussion here about whether he was truly left off last year, or simply not named as a starter.

Correct.
He was on the NLDS roster, but did not pitch, and from what I understand Lou had no intention of using him except in an emergency.

duhhh
Serves me 100% right for referencing this Jay Mariotti article that was posted yesterday.
Either way, my statement still stands. It's completely irrelevant.

There is no need to be hasty..
and frankly, at this point I don't think that Jason is going anywhere. Numerous sources are reporting that there is ABSOLUTELY no market for him right now, so for at least the next few months at least he's more valuable to us in the rotation.
Besides, the cost is sunk, and he's effectively been limited by being named the fifth starter. At 25-28 starts max, we might actually get a better Marquis for the money.

2008 Marquis is 2007 Jacque Jones
waiting to happen all over again. Now he could get lucky and up his value and the Angels could have 3 more pitchers get injured and be willing to trade anything for Marquis, but the odds are more likely that Marquis value is at its height right now and if what Damen says above is true - that there still is no market, well, then that's bad news.
In response to this post, it's not that Marquis' value goes up by being named a starter; it's that Hendry's leverage went up.
Marshall makes a lot of sense as a swing man. Lieber makes a lot of sense as a better rotation option than Jason Marquis.

And Marquis over Dempster.

How is it a bad thing?
It is not--in this era of baseball--ever a bad thing to have a capable starter on your 40 man roster. In short I'm very comfortable with the Cubs team as it is this season. Our primary divisional competition hasn't improved drastically. I'm as confident in our chances this season last week not knowing who the 4th and 5th starters would be as I am this week knowing they will be Dempster and Marquis. Call me optimistic, call me dumb, whatever.

Oh, I'm not less confident in our chances or anything
I just think Lieber is a better starter than Marquis and we don't want to be paying Marquis 9 mill next year to put up a 5.00 ERA when Sean Gallagher and Sean Marshall will both be better rotation options and hopefully one of our other prospects will be also.
Your question is "is it ever a bad thing to have a capable starter on your 40-man"? My answer - yes, of course, if you're paying him too much money and starting him over better options. Out of the people supposedly in the battle for the 5th starter spot (and it was never really a battle, it was just a question as to whether or not Marquis would get traded) - Jason Marquis is the least likely to have his ERA below 5.00.
I really think Marquis would have been traded by now were it not for Omar Minaya slowing down the pitching market so much.

The only real reason for trading him
would be to free up some salary room if, as has been conjectured, they are at their budget limit and can't add anyone else. Of course, that means that there is no reason to trade him in a deal that requires the Cubs to eat his contract.

for trying to get rid of marquis--as with most jobs in this world a boss dont sit to kindly with ultimatums. marquis has a shitty attitude.
