Dutchie Caray: Kicking butt and taking names
Okay, maybe she's not that mad yet. But she isn't thrilled with the AT&T ads using Harry's likeness in questionable taste. According to the clip, a rep. from Harry Caray's restaurant alludes that Harry's estate gave permission, and was told the ad campaign would be 'tributary,' but did not see the ads until it was too late. Negative kudos to the lawyer that didn't negotiate for the estate to have approval over the ads.

I'm a bit annoyed too
The radio spots are better, maybe because I don't have to see this guy that looks nothing like Harry.

true that
I've noticed that the internet banner ads in the campaign do not use the actor's image, but rather an actual picture of Harry, too. Perhaps they realized how far the actor was from any semblance of reality

From yesterdays Sun Times
http://www.suntimes.com/news/foster/858863,CST-NWS-stella25.article
THE SCOOP: I RECENTLY called Grant DePorter, president of Harry Caray's restaurants, and told him that I personally didn't like the current AT&T TV commercials with John Caponera, who impersonates the late great Harry Caray. And this is DePorter's response:
"I am not a fan of the AT&T commercials either. The restaurants have nothing to do with AT&T's commercials but did hear that AT&T was looking at doing some sort of tribute ad to Harry," DePorter said. "Virtually everyone who has seen them thinks they are poorly done and being run too frequently. I have asked AT&T to discontinue these commercials multiple times. And I just learned that AT&T is discontinuing the commercials as of March 30.
"Dutchie Caray (Harry's widow), who has been in California, has not seen them, nor did she have any say in their production. She was under the impression that this was going to be a relatively small campaign because of the very nominal fee that was offered to the estate for the use of Harry's image. She will be flying back to Chicago this week to help open the new Harry Caray's Tavern across from Wrigley Field," said DePorter

didn't see that, thanks!
"Very nominal fee," eh? Another kudos point docked from whomever's running the estate.

You know....
It's a long leap from a tributary marketing campaign to one that makes a dead man look like a drunk buffoon.

Amen.
The actor seems like he's aping Will Ferrell's batsh!t crazy Harry Caray than the real Harry.

To be fair...
... Caponera was doing Harry imitations long before Will Farrell was even a blip on the radar screen. I remember seeing Harry on Roy Firestone probably 15-20 years ago with Caponera and another Harry impersonator.
That being said I think these commercials are wrong on many levels. First is that they're just not funny. Secondly the man has been dead for a decade, let the shtick rest. And finally they're just annoying as hell and make me want to change the channel.

touche
I was not aware he has been imitating Harry that long. Granted, I was only 4 years old twenty years ago. Not trying to make you feel old, just sayin'.

well...
... twenty years ago I was only 12. Anyhow I just wanted to point out that Caponera was doing Harry a while back... no big deal. I think we all agree on the bigger issue... which is that this commercial sucks.

I remember that show
Seems to me that Harry thought the impersonators were pretty funny. But I can see where his wife wouldn't like it. I agree with whoever said that the person running the estate should have gotten the right to approve the commercial before allowing it to air.

Harry was a drunk buffoon
He often talked about beer and yes he did drink often. He was always pointing out the hot ladies in the stands to Arne and covered it well with Arne's hat shots. How many times did he also mention the boats on the lake or how good looking a young man Ryno was. But really matters is he was one of the most open, honest and caring guys ever to call baseball games.
Of course in today's PC world where the 1st amendment is constantly under attack, the viewpoint of a [perceived] drunken old man calling baseball games may offend some. Personally I could care less what the enlightened PC'ers would have to say about Harry. They can shove it.
One of my friends was part of the Feb 2004 celebration / contest when they blew up the Bartman ball. He truly imitates Harry (better voice than Caliendo IMHO) in a manner consistent with what Harry was; an old fart who liked booze, liked women and LOVED THE CUBS.
The commercials are an attempt at a tribute to Harry, it's beside the point.
I agree the AT&T commercials are run too often and the guy doing them isn't that good but that part is because of my bias towards my buddy who I think does it better.
BTW anyone who was watching WGN that Feb 2004 morning of the Bartman ball explosion, knows they had the sound-a-like contestants in the bar by 6AM for interviews. One scene is where the guys were standing around a cake each taking a bite and doing a Harry voice. My buddy was the one that said, "the last time I had cheesecake this good, it was wearing a skirt!". Original, funny and something us longtime Cubs fans could really imagine Harry would say, and of course in a great voice-over.
I've been after my buddy (who works here in Schaumburg with me) to take the next step with the Harry voice. He usually has folks rolling on the floor, or in the case in AZ this month in Mesa and Tempe, rolling in the grass. What he usually ends up with is people buying him beers so he does more Harry one and two liners.

Years ago...
... I got to work a few games in both the Cubs and White Sox booths in various TV/radio jobs I had there.
Harry never drank in the booth. Jack Brickhouse, OTOH, had a cooler in the press box.
Just sayin'.

I have never liked the idea
of impersonating someone who is deceased, especially when you are trying to make people laugh. I always found it distasteful when people would impersonate Harry when Chip was around. Plus those ads are really bad.

Took me awhile, but I finally found a feedback form
on their website (under Investor Relations) where I could vent - and vent I did.
I am a shareholder, customer, and one pissed-off Cubs fan. Your current ad campaign featuring Harry Caray is a disgrace and anyone in your marketing department and/or executive management with Chicago connections should be ashamed of themselves. You took a legendary figure and made a buffoon of him. I saw your little song-n-dance number by your official spokesperson who said the ad campaign was going to end on March 30 anyway. IT NEVER SHOULD HAVE STARTED!
In addition to pissing off me and countless other Cubs fans, you have needlessly upset Dutchie Caray, Harry's widow and one of the nicest, most decent people I have ever met. Again, anyone from AT&T who had a hand in this campaign should be ashamed of themselves and their future at AT&T should be examined very closely.
I know that I will be examining my future relationship with AT&T very closely.

Agreed.
These ads are shameful at best. It's one thing to "make fun" of Harry in a stand-up act, but to broadcast to the world the image of Harry as a "drunk buffon" is not only distasteful, but hurtful.
I agree with the bluebythebook, the lawyer from the estate should be ashamed of themselves for not examining the ads before they aired.
I know, it doesn't really matter to AT&T, but I for one, have switched service providers since the ads have aired.

never have seen ads .. but ..
Harry probably wouldn't have cared over this tempest in the proverbial media teapot in Chicago, I think. He was the ultimate showman who wasn't above jerking chains and I personally suspect that he likely would have given them the nod if he was alive .. after all, I seem to remember a certain series of "Bud Man" commercials he did and a comment about "booze, broads and B.S." which defined a certain kind of personal philosophy he embodied in his public persona. But as I said I haven't seen them and don't know the context of how they portrayed him.
I would agree that a playful impersonation of Harry's mannerism can be made to go too far to hyping anything, and AT & T., the bloated corporate Bord that it is, surely isn't above that kind of excess. They'll have Beyonce on there bouncing herself around with dancing cell phones next if they could. Gotta remember the old saying .. "This is America. If it works, overdo it .. "
Well, Next Year is here .. and Jack's century's gotta end some time .. GO CUBBIES!
