Good
I'm glad this is done, one way or the other. I fully expect Conspiracy theorists to keep plugging away at this for quite some time, but the fact that somebody finally said this deal is dead is good enough for me!!!! *Cracks open Champaign*

Leading off
That article states:
When left-handers are starting, manager Lou Piniella said Wednesday morning that he may bat Kosuke Fukudome first. But look for Piniella to go with Reed Johnson leading off against lefties at the outset of the season, so as not to put added pressure on Fukudome, who has had a sub-par spring.
Interesting... a 3 man lead-off hitter rotation. Hmmm... no so sure.

If Theriot is the lead off man
why would he not lead off against lefties? Does he suck hitting against them or something? Maybe this is just a Paul Sullivan brain cramp? Speaking of which, it was nice how he wrote that now "DeRosa should be able to rest in peace". Um, the guy did have a heart problem, but he's still among us!

And so the Cubs...
...somehow think Reed Johnson and Theriot are more capable at leadoff than Fukudome....urrrrggghhhh!!!! Is ABC still managing this team?
I'm not sold on Dome leading of just yet. He hasnt even taken one MLB at bat. I think he needs a few weeks taking some live swings before moving him to leadoff......but I'm usualy wrong.

I have no problem with experimenting....
...with your lineup. It's a long season so you are bound to use numerous combinations. I am not complaining about Theriot and Johnson batting some lead off but rather the Cubs' thinking that brings them to these conclusions. I think your rationale for Fukudome not starting right away at leadoff is better than anything I have heard from the Cubs. But still, the Cubs need to focus on what matters and then put the guys in at the right spots to achieve it. I am not saying that you are tooting reed Johnson's horn, but I am reading these other posts here where people tout his OBP against LHP, as if that means anything. Reed Johnson is a sub., a role player with limited ability and he shouldn't be cast as a main player. The main problem with Cubs lineup is their lack of star talent. This is evidenced in part by their poor record against LHP despite a lineup heavy with RHBatters. The Cubs lack quality players. Fukudome was signed because he's expected to be above average. In my book, you never take ABs away from above average players for the likes of Theriot & Johnson, but there are exceptions such as miserable prolonged slumps. But in any event, my point is that the Cubs need to focus on the TALENT that they have (and it aint Johnson or Theriot) put those guys at the top and put less credence on the matchups. The matchup B.S. is for tweaking the roster and for the 7th and 8th hitters...
Actually
Theriot is better against LH pitchers then RH pitchers. Last season he hit 286/352 against LH pitchers. Reed Johnson leading off makes a ton of sense with his 370 career OBP against LH pitchers.
I'm not sure why he would want Fukudome batting leadoff against LH pitching. But last year he wanted a LH hitter who hits LH pitching well, because he felt LH pitchers got in too much of a groove against us pitching to one side of the plate the whole game. So since the leadoff hitter gets more AB's then any other hitter, it could stop him from getting in a groove. Plus I think Lou likes Fukudome as a leadoff hitter actually, but he feels like he needs a LH hitter to protect Ramirez against RH pitching. But since most Cubs hitters acfually hit better against LH pitching he feels he could use somebody else to protect Ramirez.. But honestly I'm not really sure
In today's papers
Lou said one of the reasons for this idea (which may never be implemented), in addition to Dome's patience, was that he didn't want LHPs pitching around Aramis. He also seemed to throw this out there just to give the beat writers (and us fans) something to chew on, saying "It'll give you all something to play around with..."

I'm glad it's done
but not glad about the outcome. I hoped we'd get Roberts. So did Piniella and Hendry. But it's good that one of the GMs came out and said it's not going to happen, since they apparently can't agree. Al is feeling very satisfied, I'm sure. Congrats, Al!
PS - a more descriptive FanPost title is in order, madtown, if you can edit it.

Damn!
Without daily, baseless Roberts to Cubs rumors, my life is devoid of meaning.
Also...
When left-handers are starting, manager Lou Piniella said Wednesday morning that he may bat Kosuke Fukudome first.
Awsome.

This is all I could ask for.
Make the move or close the book BEFORE opening day. Well done Andy!

Wow
I guess my username doesn't have to go the way of KOW after all!!!!!!!!

That will only happen if...
...you get banned from BCB and then slink back in under a different (and even lamer) username.
Ladies and gentlemen, your 2008 Chicago Cubs starting outfield: Soriano-Pie-Fukudome. Let it be.
Nice. I love a good KOW slam daver!

Question to Al
I get who is KOW now, is it possible to ask why she got banned?
"Hey.....Cubs win!!!" ---Harry "I strongly dislike Steve Stone." ---Hammer
It was a long time ago.
She's behaved since returning. Let's leave it at that.

So Al,
If TTTSNBN does go through at the ASB -- and they dump DeRo -- what will I have to do to get banned???

If true...
...I am dissappointed. I think Roberts would round out the lineup exceptionally well and give them versatility they have lacked for several years.
I wouldn't close the door completely on it yet, but if Hendry confirms what McPhail has said, you go with what you have and hope you can add at the TD if necessary.

Wow that was dumb
.. I guarentee after the first month we regret not getting Roberts. The riot cant bat leadoff and be consistent for a team that wants to win a world series. We have almost all the pieces to get there. Whats going to be so great about holding on to a couple of farm hands that may not turn in to anything, and are projected to be a little better than crap. It makes on sense to me
I think the Orioles
were trying to get a Bedard type package from us for Roberts. They probably wanted something like Pie or Colvin, Gallagher, Ceda and Cedeno or Patterson. While the Cubs were probably offering more of the type of the package the Orioles got for Tejada with something like Gallagher, Murton or Patterson, Veal or Marshall and Cedeno. Most teams weren't offering a package like the Cubs were offering. So that tells me the Orioles were asking for way too much for Roberts. Brian Roberts is a nice player, but he isn't Chase Utley and he doesn't have upside like Cano or Phillips at age 30. So the Orioles shouldn't be asking for three top prospects for him, with a couple of second tier prospects.
If that is the case...
...the light bulb will go off for McPhail (and maybe Angelos) in the near future.
As far as I am concerned, Robert's value should be at it's peak right now, primarily because he has 2 years left on a livable contract. The more time that ticks off that deal, the less attractive he becomes from a financial standpoint. The O's may get lucky and have a bidding war at the TD, but things would need to lineup just right for that to happen.
