Done

Do you want Express, Victoria's Secret, or Lane Bryant models in those bikinis?

How about

3 Express models, 3 VS models and 4 Lane Bryant models for April (cold night games require snuggling to keep warm)

Well, wait, any macho dude who wants any sort of shot with me would need to be a Cubs fan, regardless of... anything else. Never mind.

But, I appreciate someone addressing our needs too. :-D

I know

but he's been so bad that people are questioning if he's hurt. He has been walking batters like he's getting paid extra to do it. He even had a sit down with Lou and the front office about it. How many times do you see that? Whatever is going on with him isnt mechanical....I dont think. Maybe some of the more knowledgeable folks here that were in Arizona can give more info.

I blame Pinella

The Cubs could win the WS if Jim Leyland was in charge. Pinella puts too much pressure on younger players.

What to do with Murton

Over the next few days, Hendry will try to trade Murton, something he has been trying to do without success since December.

But Hendry will not give Murton away. Just as other GMs have tried to squeeze Hendry on deals this off-season, Hendry may take a hard line on Murton and ask for a top prospect or two in return.

If that doesn't happen, the Cubs can option Murton to Class AAA Iowa.

Murton tried to look at things philosophically.

"I know it's cliché -- all I can do is take it a day at a time," he said. "That's what I learned to do last year. You can't really expect anything in this game. You've just got to believe in your own ability, which I do. Just believe that it's going to work itself out."

Murton wouldn't ask for a trade, but he seems to think he might be better off playing in the big leagues elsewhere.

"I'm a Chicago Cub right now," he said. "It's no secret. There isn't a player in here who doesn't want to play. I think I'm better suited being out there on the field on a consistent basis. That might not present itself here for a while.

"So, if the opportunity presents itself to go somewhere else and I get a chance to play, great. If I'm still here in Chicago, that's great, too."

http://www.dailyherald.com/story/?id=161198&src=152

by cubsfan25 on Mar 27, 2008 2:35 AM CDT reply actions

Hendry doesn't figure to be any more willing to accept a sub-value deal than he has been over the last several months that Murton has been available. The urgency of Opening Day could influence a team with a need for a polished hitter at a corner outfield spot.

''We like Matt a lot, and I think, on a lot of clubs, he's an every-day player in left field,'' Hendry said. ''We're just in a spot where on the corners we have two outstanding players, and we needed somebody like Reed Johnson who could play some in center.''

Murton, 26, has been kept informed by the front office throughout spring training and through the Johnson acquisition.

''I think the front office is making every attempt to better their team and at the same time to make sure their players have an opportunity to continue to succeed,'' said Murton, who spent about a month in the minors last year before returning and finishing a .281 season for the Cubs. ''I think at this point it's important for me to get a chance to play -- and at the same time I want to be here to help this ballclub.''

Said Hendry: ''Matt knows the situation. He's a first-class guy, and we'll try to do what's best for the club and Matt as we proceed forward.''

It's good to hear that the Cubs aren't planning on giving Murton away.

Right.

Plus, he's available if anyone gets hurt.

Or if Ronny Cedeno sucks again.

Cedeno

I think Cedneno makes a fine backup and is terrifying as a starter. I'd hate to see Murton go, but the way the Cubs are buying outfielders we are not about development anymore.

I'm not sure we're going to see a lot of home grown talent here for awhile unless people get hurt.

by Woodstock on Mar 27, 2008 9:56 AM CDT up reply actions

In many ways...

... Cedeno might be better as a starter. As a backup, he'll mostly come into games in the late innings as a pinch-hitter, pinch-runner and/or defensive replacement.

That terrifies me.

by Kinky Reggae on Mar 27, 2008 8:11 AM CDT reply actions

its a catch 22..my fear is a certain LF's hamstring

..or groin will act up in the cold weather and Murton would sure be useful then...

Let me get back to you, will ya, Charlie? I got a guy on the other line asking about some white walls.

by JB 23 on Mar 27, 2008 8:26 AM CDT up reply actions

Murton is perfect...

...for a small market club that needs an LF/RF that will come cheap and can hit major league pitching. He just isn't a fit for most clubs looking to contend, because they would be looking for more power out of his position.

The problem here is timing. Everyone knows the Cubs don't have a spot for him, and that kills some of his value. Hendry has some positive and negative qualities, but one mistake he typically makes, is holding onto players too long and having to deal with being in a poor negotiating position because of that. I can't recall a time, when Hendry traded a player when their value was high to fill a need.

Like Branch Rickey used to say; "its always better to trade a player a year too early, vs a year too late"

Selling High

Bobby Hill and Justin Jones come to mind in terms of players who returned value but didn't amount to much afterwards. There was also a power right-handed reliever whose name escapes me that went to the Expos with Brendan Harris in the Nomar deal.

Francis Beltran.

Same thing.

Ramirez?

Getting Ramirez for players that never amounted to anything was pretty good.

Prospects come and go all the time. For anyone to expect that a GM will know which ones don't amount to anything and which ones will is not a given. Murton was never thought of that highly by anyone anyway. If you believe the rumors, the Rangers wouldn't take him for Marlon Byrd.

by rlpete on Mar 27, 2008 1:18 PM CDT up reply actions

Ramirez was a Bucs salary dump

as was D-Lee with the fish. You can more easily dump less-worthy prospects on teams in that mode because of their desperation. The Cubs are not desperate to dump Matty. He has AAA options left. Jimbo's best stance now is patience.

You can only use the selling-high postulate if the team you're dealing with is in the same mode as a previous deal. Since A-Ram's situation with the Bucs was a salary dump and not a young 4th outfielder with AAA options left, you cannot compare the two.

by blackhawk24 on Mar 27, 2008 3:04 PM CDT up reply actions

My question for SeanDubbs would be...

...who would you offer for Murton? I'm not really familiar enough with the Devil Ra...er, I mean, Rays roster or farm system to even begin speculating about a trade. To be honest, as far as this season goes, I'd say the Cubs chief need right now is a better-hitting shortstop. Beyond that, most all of the other positions seemed filled reasonably well. Maybe a couple decent pitching prospects? Or a backup catcher for when Blanco retires?

Ladies and gentlemen, your 2008 Chicago Cubs starting outfield: Soriano-Pie-Fukudome. Let it be.

by daver on Mar 27, 2008 10:49 AM CDT reply actions

I say keep him...

...unless Jimbo has his doors blown off with an offer. Who knows maybe Fonzie would re-injure that leg. Matty would fit right back in LF. While I'd miss the routine 7-2 putouts, I like Matty's chance to hit a nice robust .375 OBP.

I like Jimbo having some restraint.

by blackhawk24 on Mar 27, 2008 11:46 AM CDT reply actions

Rays Players for consideration

The current depth chart lists the following shortstops:

Starting SS: Jason Bartlett (R) career .272/.341/.362
backup SS: Ben Zobrist (R) .200/.234/.362

I don't see any upgrade here from Theriot/Cedeno/Fontenot/DeRo

Pitchers of interest IMO:
SP: Andrew Sonnanstein - promising rookie (you sure he's off the table?)
Matt Garza - career 4.47 ERA
(Unlikely that either of these options are better than marquis/dempster/marshall)

RP: Dan Wheeler(R) 4.09 ERA .259 BAA 327 Games Played - very nice veteran presence
Al Reyes(R) (probably off the table) 3.79 ERA .219 BAA 358 Games Played

How about Murton and Bobby Howry for Sonnanstein, Wheeler, Reyes and a nice infield prospect or two?

by cubsonWGN4ever on Mar 27, 2008 12:30 PM CDT reply actions

You're asking way too much

Glenn Gibson and Calvin Medlock would probably do the job.

As far as a SS the only one of real value that we have is Reid Brignac and he's pretty close to off limits. Sonny isn't going anywhere and neither is Garza. If you wanted Edwin Jackson instead of the prospects that would fly as well, but his fly ball rate is horrible and you would need to pray for a stiff wind blowing in when he pitches. Wheeler and Reyes are on the club until July when their value will be much higher to contenders.

Reference the 2008 Tampa Bay Rays Trade Value Index from Rays Index to see a list of our most valuable guys.
