"The Cubs: 99 Years of Misery" on ESPN.com

Since I didn't see it posted elsellwhere, I thought I would post it here:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=cubs/0919&sportCat=mlb

It breaks down every year from 1909 to 2007 in little capsule form.  It's not too bad and it does a good job of giving Cubs history for those who don't know much about it.

This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation or Al Yellon, managing editor (unless it's a FanPost posted by Al). FanPost opinions are valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Don't stop at the intro paragraphs

I was afraid it would all be black cats and bartman--but it is really informative

Sigh.

I'm tired of hearing about this, aren't you? Don't we all know about the 99/100 years already?

Let's look forward to THIS year.

Actually

I think most of us here don't know about the Cubs of the teens and twenties. And while you do, I think most don't even know about the 50s, 60s, and 70s. I don't think very many people around here are aware of the Roy Smalley era, and how truly dreadful the Cubs (and Smalley) were then. Heck, even for people in their middle age, Roy Smalley is that guy who played for the Twins and Yankees.

It's obviously too brief and it's mostly a concept--let's look at every year and decide what or when it went wrong. But it's not a bad short history of the team.

Sure, we're all tired of the hook, but if having to hear about a century of failure is the worst thing we have to endure this season, then we're blessed.

True.

Learning about team history is a fine thing. If anyone really wants to do that, I'd recommend Peter Golenbock's "Wrigleyville". Excellent history of the Cubs.

Thanks for the link but I couldn't help myself and went straight to 1969.

As usual,

ESPN's the first one with the story....oh, wait I forgot about FOXSports' story, Yahoo! Sports' story, the SI.com feature, the 3-4 AOL Fanhouse entries, and The Comunist Who Shall Not Be Named's constant allusions.

This crap is going to get really old, really fast.

Just read the article.

I'm with Al, too cliche. I'm looking foward to this year (as Lilly gives up 2 HRs in the 1st)
