Fans wearing "Keep It Wrigley" T-shirts to home opener
A United Press International (UPI) News website writes that Chicago Cubs fans are buying hundreds of "Keep It Wrigley" T-shirts to wear to Monday's home opener at Wrigley Field.
A newspaper (Chicago Sun Times?) is "giving away 100 'Keep it Wrigley' shirts to contestants who submit the most creative limerick explaining why the revered baseball stadium should keep its name."
This is a FanPost and does not necessarily reflect the views of SB Nation, Bleed Cubbie Blue, or Al Yellon, editor-in-chief. FanPost opinions are, however, valued expressions of opinion by passionate and knowledgeable baseball fans.

Seems stupid to me, but
let folks do what they want. It won't change anything and I'll bet the weather will keep them under coats.

Got a link to that "UPI Website"?
Or is it the site selling the shirts?
My position on this issue is well known. I won't wear one of those, because I just don't care if naming rights are sold. It'll always be Wrigley to me.
Plus, those folks are gonna be cold if all they wear is a T-shirt (and, presumably, pants, but you never know).

The link to the UPI article is in the post
I edited the text to "Link to website article" instead of the headline of the article ("Cubs fans buy 'Keep It Wrigley' T-shirts")

Thanks for the link.
I don't see any corroboration in the article, though. All it says is:
Angry Chicago Cubs fans are buying hundreds of "Keep It Wrigley" T-shirts as their outfit of choice for the team's Monday home opener at Wrigley Field.
"Hundreds"? The Sun-Times bought 100 of them. Who are all these "angry fans" who are buying "hundreds" of them?

and is it really the "popular way for Cubs fans to speak out" as the article reads?
I'm curious how "popular" this really is. Nice plug for Chris Festa, the creator of the T-shirt.
There is also a web site called Keep It Wrigley where you sign an on-line petition. As far as my research goes, it is not owned by Chris Festa.
BTW, here's a link to the Chicago Sun-Times article, with a selection of the best limerick entries we've received so far: http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/865675,CST-NWS-wrig28.article
Note: hundreds of fans are outraged! HA!
Hundreds of outraged Cubs fans are snatching up a local company's "Keep It Wrigley" T-shirts to wear to Monday's home opener.

I believe you.
I think the Sun-Times (and UPI, who apparently picked it up from the Sun-Times) got suckered by a press release from Chris Festa.

Remember This Shirt?
I got this one a couple of years ago when Walter E Smithe had their April Fools Joke. Its one of my favorite shirts to wear to the park. I wonder what kind of response I would get if I woree it to Wrigley now.

those ads were great
Most of their ads are, really. Has anyone seen the Field of Dreams parody with Banks and Williams?
Those center field recliner seats would have been so sweet, too...

I don't think this will matter.
Zell seems to care less about what the fans think , he will end up selling the naming rights if he wants to.
Bring back the damn cowbell!

Hope they freeze
If anyone is dumb enough to wear a tshirt on Monday to the game I hope they freeze their gazoobies off.
We are all waiting for that glorious October night when we finally win it all. Until then we will continue to cheer, never do the wave and hope.

Anyone else interested in...
... a t-shirt that says
"I don't care if they re-name Wrigley...I just want a World Series winner"
Or is selling t-shirts on BCB not a good idea?

If
they want to make a statement they should wear nothing but a clear poncho. Not sure where they'd keep they're ticket stubs. We could stick
em all in that right field bleacher box thats ALWAYS empty.

Zell has practically no choice: He must sell naming rights
If I'm the trustee of the Tribune's employee stock ownership plan over at GreatBanc (majority shareholder of Tribune Company) and I found out Zell didn't sell naming rights to Wrigley Field for $200M-$400M when he could have, I'd threaten to sue Zell personally for breach of fiduciary duty. The Tribune Company needs the money, and Zell has the legal duty to do what's best for the company. The sale must happen.
So we'd all better get over it, and be glad that at least so far, Zell hasn't tried to pressure or force the Cubs to trim payroll.
However, I can understand why some people care about the naming rights, and it's a perfectly valid position.
From an essay at Agony & Ivy:
"But Wrigley Field has come to mean much more to people than even a baseball stadium, symbolizing something mythical and nostalgic and grand. Something so inherently good that its identity cannot possibly be for sale, that we cannot possibly do anything to seriously compromise it. In a sense, I think many see Wrigley Field as a general in the battle against the downsides of Progress (capital P). In large part, I think this is because it’s unique among places—even among baseball stadiums—in creating such a personal relationship with each of its visitors. Such places that invoke such genuine passion are harder and harder to come by."

Just like my dad calls CD's... tapes.
My dad will say "Just got a Beatles tape." I laugh, then remind him it's a CD, not a tape. He doesn't care. People will call the place where the Cubs play Wrigley becuase thats what they grew up on. Change the name to Nissan Stadium at Wrigley Field, the only people who will actually call it that are the tv and radio folks.
