Who else is left for Dude to pick up

http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/7868404/Sources:-Reds-sign-Patterson,-Hairston?CMP=OTC-K9B1408131 62&ATT=49

The Reds are looking to really load up for this season. Is Neifi still available? That would be the crowning touch for this offseason if the Reds can pick him up. Base clogging is against the rules, so these dudes should fit right in. Check out the Red Reporter right now. They are about to go into melt down mode over signing CPatt and Hairston Jr. I almost feel sorry for them.

I am sure he can do it again for old times sake.

Don't mention that name

It's apparently official...
... per Ken Rosenthal:
The Reds, adding another center fielder to an already crowded mix, have signed free agent Corey Patterson to a minor-league contract, according to major-league sources.

Patterson, who played for new manager Dusty Baker with the Cubs, will compete with Ryan Freel, Norris Hopper and top prospect Jay Bruce for the Reds' center-field job.

The Reds also signed free-agent infielder/outfielder Jerry Hairston Jr. on Monday, but it is unclear how Hairston -- another former Cub under Baker -- would fit on the Cincinnati roster, if at all.

re: That would be just too weird.
Actually, I think there'd be a certain twisted logic to Bonds ending his career playing under Dusty Baker. Of course, considering the only position Barroid can "play" (and I use that term loosely) is left field, the idea doesn't seem all that feasible. I assume Adam Dunn would never concede to a platoon. Nonetheless, imagine that for a second: a Bonds/Dunn platoon. Power and OBP up the wazoo but a massive, sucking black hole in terms of defense.

re: Well they are both lefties
Oh, right. Somehow I misremembered that Bonds bats left-handed. (What can I say? I've been hanging out with Andy Petite a lot lately.) Just a crazy notion to begin with anyway...

You know this might actually be possible
I've been trying to figure out who might sign him and if both Griffey and Baker pushed for it, Krivsky is desperate enough to win that he might do it.  Problem is he has to make room - he'd have to trade Votto and play Dunn back at 1B, or trade Dunn (base-clogger).  Of course, Votto has been rumored in a Blanton deal...

Wow
I really feel bad for Reds fans.  Not only do hey have to deal with Dusty for many years (I do think he'll do well in the first couple and bring this team back to respectability), but they also have to deal with a GM who is listening to a manager who has no idea how to identify talent and evaluate MLB players.  Filling the roster with these kinds of guys will only tempt Dusty to play retreads over giving prospects the chance to cut their teeth in the bigs.  This will set their return to contention back immeasurably.

This is EXACTLY why I thought this was a horrible manager signing by the Reds.  Miserable.

I don't think
Reds fans truly understood the trouble they were in when Dusty signed on with them.  Now maybe they're getting the hint.  With Wayne Krivsky at the helm and Dusty driving the bus does anyone seriously think they'll contend this year?  Sorry, I just don't see it.  Walt Jocketty might just be the happiest person in Cincy today, now he knows for sure he'll be a GM again real soon.
I know that you believe that you understood what you think I said, but I am not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant. - Robert McCloskey

If Barry signs
they will contend.  If not, things could break right for them and they might, but it won't have anything to do with Dusty and he's a good hedge for us Cub fans against the many things that could break right among their younger players.
