"I wouldn't have caught it, anyway."

In amongst the ubiquitous stories about the Cubs and futility came this one by AP's Jim Litke. Standard stuff, for the most part, except for this interesting first person tidbit regarding the  the playoff game with the Marlins.

"I didn't have the heart to tell DePorter this story, but last June, my two sons and I got into an elevator at Macy's department store in midtown Manhattan at the same time as Moises Alou and two friends. Alou was playing for the Mets, but on the disabled list at the time. Someone mentioned Chicago and the conversation turned to the Cubs.

"Everywhere I play, even now, people still yell, 'Bartman! Bartman!' I feel really bad for the kid," Alou said, shaking his head.

"You know what the funny thing is?" he added a moment later. "I wouldn't have caught it, anyway.""

I remember watching the game and trying to figure out why Alou had such a hissyfit, since it didn't look to me like he really had a chance to catch the ball. If he had caught it, it would have been a great play. But by jumping around and acting like an 8-year-old, he incited the fans into a total emotional overreaction, and probably helped contribute to the Cubs implosion.

I know this is old news, but I just wish that those folks who still blame the fan for screwing the Cubs' chances at the WS could read this and offer an apology to that fan for their collective stupidity.
