Opening Day Poem
After spending time in Texas with the USAF and completing school in San Marcos, I returned home to Chicago in the late Seventies at long last. Suffering from major Cubs and Wrigley Field withdrawal, I vowed to never leave home again, and remedy my baseball fever ASAP.
I was fortunate to attend Opening Day 1980 in Wrigley.
Later that night I composed my first ever Wrigley Field/Cubs poem. Al, I hope that you allow me to post this here to share with my favorite Cubs community.

The 17th of April 19 Eight O
An Autumn-Spring sky on Chicago’s North side,
Marked the most special occasion as Opening Day.
From season to season the structure had stood,
That was called Wrigley Field – Cubs Park, just as good.
The neighborhood, East Lakeview, where the crowds had arrived
By L, bus, and auto was coming alive.
Not Mardi Gras, or Christmas, or Fourth of July,
Could match the anticipation, the bravado, the high.
Loyal fans they were called- Diehards to some
Who weathered each Winter and still they would come,
With an indomitable spirit and hopes of the day,
When ‘Wait Till Next Year’ would just fade away…
In pregame festivities the fans milled about,
Buying hotdogs and beers to help with the shouts;
For their Cubbies were heroes from early childhood days,
No matter the fact that no pennant was won.
But now the game’s starting – the perennial chance
To play Autumn-Spring baseball in October at last!
In this dreamlike sense of aura, thoughts drift to the past.
For here in the Friendly Confines, no time seems to elapse...
The young and the old, the new and the few,
All share in a time capsule which bridges the gaps
Of generations who will follow the footsteps, the tracks,
Which lead to Clark and Addison, Waveland, Sheffield, and back!

Nice job!
I'd love to hear this read aloud with some kinda dramatic music behind it.

Thank You!
The Barnes and Noble in Bolingbrook has an open mic night around the end of the month sponsored by the Naperville Writers group ( not certain about the exact name). I will check into this further and post details if I get this into my schedule.
Any suggestions on a musical background if allowed? My choice would probably be something from Steve Goodman.
Thanks again for your feedback!
The Cubs will be GREAT in Twenty- O-Eight!

Hmm, well, a Steve Goodman song...
...with words might be confusing, because your reading of the poem might get garbled alongside the lyrics of the song. Did Goodman ever do any instrumentals? I must confess, I'm not all that hip on his oeuvre beyond the Cubs-related songs.
Another idea might be trying to find a CD featuring some ambient "baseball game" sounds. I'm not exactly sure where you'd find such a recording , but I'm guessing ,if you search the Web, you might be able to find something used for plays, dramatic readings, etc.
Good luck!

"Maris' Farewell" by George Winston!
Wow! Thanks for your encouraging words and tips!
I found a treasure trove of baseball music/CDs that are truly worthwhile for any fan to buy: 'Diamond Cuts' is a series of Baseball music CDs first recorded in 1998 by various artists, and proceeds go to help food pantries in Washington, D.C.
The link below is two minutes of George Winston's tribute to Roger Maris (cut #21 on the 6th CD) - a hauntingly beautiful Scottish Highlands-like melody that evokes the essence of our glorious Wrigley Field!
I just missed the Open mic night on March 28th, but plan to be ready for the end of April, and will post here about details.
Thanks again for your support!

Correction about D.C. Charity group
Taken from the Crybaby CDs website about "Diamond Cuts":
"The proceeds from Diamond Cuts provide funding for Hungry for Music, a Washington, DC-based charity. Hungry for Music's mission is to inspire disadvantaged children (and others) by bringing positive musical and creative experiences into their lives. Programs include a musical instrument donation for underprivileged children."
