Try Yahoo Sports version of Gameday.
It's not as flashy, but it does the job.

You guys did a great job
but like I feared, the gameday chat with all the avatars and traffic, would be slow.
I don't think
it's the avatars. Once the avatar is downloaded to your system, it's cached.
I think it's the active refresh and the extra code to do that with.

I'm not, for once. I'm even using a weak wireless signal too. Is it mainly IE users having issues?

maybe we need
Pages within a post. For example, after every 250 comments [or 100 or 300, whatever] a new comment page appears and we don't have so much data on one page. That's how LiveJournal does it, and it works well.

Not that I expect it to make it through the season. MLB's gonna find these guys, and shut the game broadcasts down.

Been tough to follow thread today at work. Has Theriot gotten the ball out of the infield, have Pie and Lee looked awful on their Ks and is Sheets really pitching well or are the boys not making good swings? Thanks.

...but I think I'm going to take the rest of the game off. (It just took forever for the preview post to pop up again.) I have to leave work in about half an hour anyway.
Ladies and gentlemen, your 2008 Chicago Cubs starting outfield: Soriano-Pie-Fukudome. Let it be.
It may also help
if, before we post a comment, we ask ourselves if it's really worthwhile to the dialog. For instance, if someone hits a HR we don't really need 16 "OMG YAY" comments. It's fun to see that many comments, but if it's ruining the fun for others we should scale back.

WGN
Just had a commercial for 60 years. They showed Bozo, Garfield, Jack, Harry, and talked about tradition then at the very end there was a shot of Skilling and the VO said "And a weatherman...with skill..." which made me laugh out loud. I guess they have to get the most out of his contract!

in Shanghai not so much
At first, I could only attempt to load the Mets broadcast for their game -- tried to get around slowness on Cub page. Almost got WTMJ to come up for Cub game, then tried WGN again.

Wow, Fooky made a baserunning mistake. That's surprising.
2008: The year we put it all together.
he thought the ball was going to get away from Kendall, but he picked it up quickly. at least he did the right thing. froze halfway to third to let DeRosa reach 2nd, then did a little misdirection to try to get rid of Kendall. haha.

The ball hit Soto
It was a fluke, the ball bounced off Soto and fell right in front of Kendall

Marmol's stuff
is looking sharp. Just NASTY sliders. He took a little off the one that was Strike 2, and it just froze him on the inside corner. Then one outside that Hardy lunged for. Lookin good, Carlos.

I agree
I know it's not the rule, but it really seems like if the pitcher throws a strike and it still hits you, then you shouldn't get to take first base. Otherwise, there's nothing to keep the batters from just standing literally on top of home plate and forcing the pitcher to choose whether to hit them with pitches or whether to throw outside the strike zone and walk them.

but it's the FIRST GAME. They've been playing in the sunny south, and now they're back here, where it's 60 if we're lucky (projected high on Wed is 49) and it's wet, and they're excited. Both starters pitched VERY well, both team's closers suffered big mistakes, and both lineups didn't hit well. Yes, Theriot needs to work on being lead-off, and probably should be moved. But DeRo, Lee, Pie all got on base, and Fukudome, well. The naysayers should be done with THAT topic.
It was a close game, and we lost. There's 160+ MORE games to go. Losing always sucks. Now, on to the next game.

theriot + soriano 1,2 = piniella boner
remember, winning should take priority.
theriot:
1) can't hit for power
2) doesn't draw walks
3) you can't steal first
4) weak weak slap hitter
Soriano
while awesome is putrid at getting on base. awful at reaching 1st base for a top of lineup hitter
piniella is so pig headed and arrogant. why don't beat writers beat him up about his arrogance and narrow mindedness?
Because
Lou could beat them up, or at least kick dirt at them. But I agree, at this point Fukudome makes a lot more sense than any of those two guys. And I would have said that BEFORE this game, too. Theriot just does not belong at the top of a major-league lineup. I love the guy, he plays hard, he's a good person, but he's not a leadoff hitter.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Quoth Fire Joe Morgan:
Gagne promptly throws seven straight balls and then Kosuke Fukudome Pearl Harbors him with a three-run tater tot.
*giggle*. Anyway, here's what I was looking for.
Alan Trammell: Assistant (to the) Manager
Don't mean to be repetitive...
...Lou will have Fukudome in the 2-hole in short order.
I hope Theriot can have the same start he did last year, because they do not have another option for leadoff. As time rolls on, I do think Theriot will end up being a bottom of the order guy, because IMO, his numbers from last year is a good measure of his offensive ability.

For whatever reason...
McPhail thinks he has a chance to get more for Brian Roberts somewhere down the line. No one knows what the Cubs offered or What the O's demanded, but I would say it is 90% certain Roberts is traded before the deadline.
McPhail is banking on a potential bidding war at the deadline and or the Cubs not getting what they want from the top of the order (in the first 25-30 games) and then maybe Hendry feels he needs to meet their demands.

I thought it was neat how Peter Gammons put it last night...
(paraphrasing): "Every team loses 60 games, and every team wins 60 games, it's what you do with the other 42 that matter."
And I said, "a loss"!!

The problem is...
this loss is just like the ones we had to choke down last year at the beginning of the year. Good starting pitching, and anemic offense doused with kerosene and set on fire by an imploding bullpen. Eventually they got on track and started winning games they should, like this one, and then started winning games they probably shouldn't have...that's what got them to the playoffs. I think Lou is expecting to not have to watch the first month of last year over again, and so should we.
As I've told you before, I never repeat myself.

that's fair enough.
Believe me, I want to win just as much as the next guy.

Kerry Wood - BAD IDEA!!
A sure fire bet to throw a possible great season away = Kerry Wood as your closer.
people stop overeacting
Wood only had one bad outing and it is to be expected. Closers don't have 0.00 ERA. You don't win them all either. What really ticks me off is the inability for the batters to pick up hits. Besides Fukudome, nearly everyone sucked.
And even though it is technically scored correctly, Gagne in no way shape or form deserves a win.

Ramirez...
...was a little sleepy today in the field. He should have taken control of the pop up Zambrano caught, and also should have been pursuing the one Soto couldn't get to.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
the pop up
that Z ran into Lee to catch?
Why would Aram have been over there?

Did you not see...
...where the ball ended up? Zambrano caught it off the mound towards third base. No way Ramirez should not have taken charge of that ball and called everyone off.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
I didn't see it.
But if he caught it off third, why was Lee right there for Z to run in to?

Because...
...Lee saw that Zambrano was not getting any help, and it is a cardinal rule to never let the pitcher field an infield popup.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
But
there was a man on 3rd, though, right? I think he stays home on that one

It was a popup...
...and your first priority is to catch the ball. The third baseman should never let the pitcher wander over there to catch that ball, and it is a long way to go for Lee to try and grab it.
It is the SS job to wander over to 3rd base if need be, because Ramirez has the shortest distance to catch the ball.
"I don't like them fellas that drive in two runs but let in three" Casey Stengel
No one should be wandering anywhere.
It's called situational play, and it's driven into every semi-serious baseballer's head from Shetland on up.

Precisely my point...
...which is why you see the third baseman catch a ball like that 95% of the time. I don't know what the hell Ramirez was doing, but Lee tried to get over there when he saw no one was taking charge.
If Zambrano would have injured his right arm breaking his fall, this would have gotten a lot more attention, I can assure you. I am sure one of the Cubs coaches had a quite word with Ramirez, especially with him not budging on the ball that blew away from Soto as well.

Even w/ a man on 2nd and not 3rd
(I can't remember exactly what the bases looked like), he still stays home, SS backs up 3B on any throw to 3rd

what is the status on Zambrano?
will he make his next start or have to skip it?

I heard it was cramps so I'm sure he'll be on the mound next start.
