Open Thread: Cubs vs. Diamondbacks at Mesa, and Cubs vs. Athletics at Phoenix, Saturday 3/8, 2:05 CT

It's split-squad day! Today, you can actually follow both games, but pay attention: the game vs. the Diamondbacks at Mesa is on WGN-TV. According to listings in Chicago newspapers today, the game in Mesa is also on WGN Radio. However, WGN radio's website doesn't list today's game as a broadcast date. The MLB.com Mediacenter says that A's station KFRC is carrying the game (KFRC's website confirms this), and so you can hear it over the air in the Bay Area, and online at that link. The Mediacenter also has WGN radio listed as carrying the Phoenix game -- so the only way to find out is to tune in!

Here's more of Crane Kenney's comments yesterday, from Paul Sullivan in the Tribune. Included is the idea, noted here before, that the Cubs could play at the Cell for a year while renovations are done to Wrigley. I don't have a problem with this.

Meanwhile, Bruce Miles tells us that Lou Piniella wants to have a closer chosen within two weeks. But Piniella also knows that the innings before the ninth are just as important:

"We get so concerned about the closer's role that you lose a lot of ballgames like we have here in the spring in the eighth inning," Piniella said. "I think we've lost three or four already. … Just give us a couple more weeks to sort this thing out, and we'll have an answer for you."
Alfonso Soriano will play today, likely in the Mesa (televised) game. So all the dire predictions of "OH NO! ONE TO TWO WEEKS!" were wrong. He missed six days, one more than originally forecast. Sean Marshall will start the Mesa game vs. Arizona; his opponent will be Micah Owings (Chad Qualls and Brandon Lyon will also throw for Arizona -- note once again to Carrie Muskat: can we have the additional Cub pitchers slated to go?). In the Phoenix game, Jon Lieber faces the oft-injured Rich Harden.

Cub lineups for both games, courtesy as always Bruce Miles:

UPDATE [2008-3-8 10:21:26 by Al]: The lineups Bruce sent are correct. Marshall was supposed to start the home game, but Bruce said Lieber got "veteran's rights" and so will pitch at home, so you'll be able to see Lieber on TV. (That game ought to go faster with Lieber pitching, too.)

Finally, in the USA and Canada, don't forget to turn your clocks ahead one hour tonight (unless you live in Arizona or Hawaii, who don't observe Daylight Saving time -- and this means that starting tomorrow, ST games will begin at 3:05 Central time). DST officially begins at 2 am.

Discuss amongst yourselves.

Why would Fuld be in LF and Kroeger in CF?

Good question.
Those are the lineups Bruce sent.

Perhaps with Colvin sent down
and Fuld playing like he wants to be sent down, Lou is exploring another option.

Hey Al,
so have you given thought to sitting in the Cell Bleachers for 81 Games?!

Quite a different animal there.

I have been thinking about this with respect to my seats and all ST holders.

When the Bears went to Champaign, the ST holders payed full boat as I recall. I wonder if the same thing would happen in this scenario?

Knowing that its the Cubs, I'd have to say, "You BETCHA!".

The saving grace is AT LEAST its in the same City.

Wait 'til next year. And the next. And the Next. And the next after that too.

Yeah...
but having an NFL Team play at your College Senior year, and getting season tickets for $200 was probably one of the coolest things to happen to me.

That being said, the Cell sucks.

I have a hunch that the Cubs at the Cell...
...wouldn't be quite as bad as people are picturing it here. I think the Cubs organization knows the sort of product it has, and a lot of the overstated "fun, fun, fun!" stuff they do at the Cell will probably go away for Cubs games.

Again - just a hunch.

You never realize
the serenity of baseball at Wrigley until you go to the Cell are an inundated with all the garbage between innings.

For Sox fans that talk so much smack about people not watching baseball at Wrigley and it being a big beer garden...it's ironic to go to the Cell and sit through three hours of Dancing Pride Girls, Stretch-Out Fan Pictures on the Video Board, Kiss Cams, T-Shirt Tosses, etc. etc.

Plus....
how much fun would it be to outdraw the Sox in their own park by about a million people over the course of a full season?  Put to rest all the Sox-fan generated B.S. about how Cub fans only care about Wrigley Field, not the team.  In fact, the more I think about it, for that reason alone I almost hope this does happen.

I agree.
They'd try to make it as close to the Wrigley experience as possible. Obviously, it's a completely different location and park, but they'd probably bring their own PA announcers. The only thing that they'd likely use would be the video board, as long as it's there.

The only definite non starter in the TV game is Fontenot.  I still think Cedeno has a chance to get into the lineup.

(If he and Theriot look about the same hitting I say go with Cedeno because of the D)

I just finished my first ever
fantasy baseball draft on yahoo. I have no idea just how good or bad I did with my picks yet. My hubby gave me some pointers before he left for his bros bachelor party, but I retained about 60% of it. They made fun of me for picking Soto as my 3rd or 4th pick, but what do they expect out of a girl that names her team sotoismyhero? I told them I had to have atleast one gut pick in there. Oh, and I got Lieber too. Hope he does good today!

Catching up with my Reading
So I just finished reading Crane Kenney's comments and I'm highly disturbed.  I don't like a single thing this guy is saying.  I'm hearing jumbo-trons, new marquee's (oh no, it's just new LETTERING....what a crock), selling the naming rights, more night games.   These things he wants to change are part of the uniqueness of Wrigley Field and my beloved Cubs.  It sounds like this guy wants to generic to increase the bottom line.

Has anyone commented on this?  Is there a Diary?  Is anyone else as upset as I am?

by soonerbered on Mar 8, 2008 3:06 PM CST up reply actions

And?
I think the last I saw the Cubs were 5 or 6 on that list, not that that's a big difference, but the Cubs must fix Wrigley. They need to open new revenue streams to pay for both ballpark renovations and an ever-increasing payroll.

Not that it matters. Wrigley will crumble on its own, if the Cubs don't get some money to fix it. See, you can't pay to fix the stadium and continue to increase payroll. The Cub have to do one or the other unless they open new revenue streams.

Not exactly.
They need extra money because the ballpark needs to be renovated. If they're going to keep increasing payroll--which they will have to do, in order to remain competitive, since baseball has no hard cap--they're going to have to get money from somewhere to fix the stadium. Naming rights, extra adspace, etc. can accomplish this, leaving the Cubs free to use traditional revenue streams towards payroll.

I want to go to a baseball game to watch a team play. I don't want to go to see tons of ads, commercials, and cheesy games that are driven towards children. Its dumb. You don't go to a game for those reasons. Thats what makes Wrigley great. Its a traditional ballpark which makes it a landmark of the game. Sure I'd take a couple of ads, but the destruction of the marquee and scoreboard would ruin the tradtion of Wrigley Field..

I watch the game. They don't get in the way at all. Go to a Chicago Fire match sometime. Every possible space, even the uniforms, is covered in ads; it doesn't take way from it one bit. Nostaliga is nice, but no one ever paid a star player with guaranteed tradition and a dose of nostalgia as a signing bonus.

When I went to Japan 8 years ago, I learned that most Japanese under 30 -- then -- had taken at least ten years of English in school.
