Thirty MLB parks. How many have you visited?

PurpleLineToWrigley gave me a great idea with his Kansas City FanPost.
1. How many Major League stadiums, past and present, have you attended a game in?
2. What do you remember about those games?
3. What's your favorite non-Cubs stadium, and which was your least-favorite?

Share in the comments! And if you feel so moved, please "recommend" so we can get as many responses as possible. Also because it took me forever to compile the poll...

All stadium info from Wikipedia. I hope I didn't leave any out. Tried to come up with as large a list as possible to cover everybody.

Reposting the questions

Since it's such a long freakin' poll.

1. How many major league stadiums, past and present, have you attended a game in?
2. What do you remember about those games?
3. What's your favorite non-Cubs stadium, and what's your least favorite?

Here are my answers to get the ball rollin'.
1. 4 (Wrigley, the Cell, Turner Field, old Busch)
2. One game during the Air and Water Show, fighter jets kept buzzing the park and it was driving Cubs starter Steve Trachsel crazy. It was against the Giants during Trachsel's first go-round with Chicago.
3. I haven't been to many, but I like U.S. Cellular since I can more easily sneak into better seats.

**correction**

The Trachsel game was against the Astros, not SF.

Sadly, my first game was at New Comiskey.

The tickets were free.

1. Two - Wrigley and New Comiskey when it was very new.

2. At my very fist baseball game ever, Harry Caray wouldn't wave at our group. We were a bunch of starstruck 6th graders from Indiana.

Just Wrigley

My earliest memory is going to a game at Wrigley, and it is still the only major league park I have been to.

1: 7 candlestick, pac bell, new and old comiskey, miller park, the kingdome, and oakland coliseum

2: Watching Rick Ruschel get blown off the mound at The Stick, man did it get cold there when it got late.

3: Pac Bell/Mays Field is the nicest stadium i've been too (i'm a little biased), the classic feel of wrigley with all the modern amenities.

1. 10: Wrigley, New Comiskey, the Astrodome, Enron/Minute Maid Field, Mile High Stadium, Coors Field, Arlington Stadium, Fenway, RFK, Safeco Field, and I won't count the Major League exhibition games at Cashman Field in Las Vegas. I'm going to Citizens Bank Park in Philly this weekend and to the new Nationals Stadium when the Cubs come to play.

2. So much to remember. The Rockies' inaugural season, the cheap seats in the outfield at the Astrodome, the 2003 playoffs in Chicago, the soulless hellhole that is new Comiskey park.

3. My favorite non-Cubs stadium is probably a toss-up between Safeco and Minute Maid parks. They've both got all the amenities and some character. I guess I'd go with Safeco, though, because Minute Maid park has that ridiculous playing surface with the hill and the flag pole. My least favorite is probably Arlington stadium. It lacks character in the same way that new Comiskey park does, plus how can you build a stadium in Texas that is outdoors-only?

Impressive list.

Are you trying to collect them all if you can?

I'd love to...

...but I'm not really trying. I've actually lived in almost all those places (Chicago, Denver, Houston, Seattle, and Washington), my in-laws live in Dallas, and I went to Fenway while in Boston on vacation. I'm hitting the new Philadelphia park while up there on vacation, and I still live in DC, so I'll check out the new stadium when the Cubs come to town.

I dont know if anyone else does this but...

My dad and I take baseball trips. We have gone pretty much everywhere on the east outside of Yankee Stadium.

We havnt been west but now that he is moving to Arizona I'm sure that one will come. I must say Camden and Fenway are probably tied for me, for which stadium I like best.

My best memory of Fenway (if you go make sure to take the tour) was A) seeing Pedro pitch when we sat behind the plate B) in that game Rico Brogna hit a walk of grand slam. The Red Sox fans went NUTS.

Ballparks

17 ballparks...Wrigley, Old Comiskey, New Comiskey, County Stadium (Milwaukee), Miller Park, HHH Metrodome, Coors Field, Chase Field, Dodger Stadium, Angels Stadium, Candlestick Park, The Kingdome, The Ballpark at Arlington, Kauffman Stadium, The Great American Ballpark, Turner Field, Old Busch Stadium,

Memories... catching a foul ball off the bat of Chili Davis at a packed Metrodome (I really like that ballpark... hard to beat atmosphere when its packed), Brant Brown dropping a somewhat important fly ball in 1998 at County Stadium... The Cubs beating the Braves in game one of the '03 NLDS where the crowd was very much pro-Cubs... Opening day at County Stadium in the mid 90's, they gave away baseballs and many were thrown back onto the field at various points in time, and, IIRC, Johnny Oates pulled his players off the field because of it...

Favorite non-Wrigley ballpark; The Ballpark at Arlington. It is a beautiful building set among rolling hills and a small pond. There are so many great features of this ballpark, architecturally, but man was it humid down there. I also really like the Metrodome, in part because I like the Twins but its totally different than most baseball games and when full, its a great atmosphere.

Least favorite ballpark; Candlestick Park. Man that place was a freaking dump. Cold, rainly, dirty... a total dump. The Kingdome was no great shakes.

Only 2

1) Wrigley and New Comiskey
2) The only time I attended a game at Comiskey, the Sox were playing my second favorite team, the A's. I left my Cubs at home since I didn't want to ask for trouble and was rooting quietly for the A's while holding my at the time 1 year old daughter. About the third inning or so, a large hand clamped down on my shoulder and a deep voice asked, "Are you rooting for the A's?" Since we were in Comiskey, I feared the worst and quickly handed my daughter to my wife and turning around to answer affirmatively. Fortunately, the man was an A's fan himself and rather large. I made sure to walk with him on our way out of the stadium.
3) Wrigley, obviously

I've only been to Wrigley, Old Comiskey, New Comiskey, Fenway and Shea. But I have driven or walked by Camden Yards, Candlestick, Coors Field and the Kingdome.

I've been to Fenway twice: once for a normal game, and once to see the Irish national team play against an amateur team from Rhode island - there were only about 50 people in the stands, very weird. Got to go in the visitors' dugout and walk out on the warning track before the game.

1. I've been to games at Kansas City, Minnesota and Wrigley
2. I was pretty little but I do remember the Royals were playing the Rangers and somebody hit an inside the park homerun. That would have been 1989 or 1990. I remember nothing about the Twins game, but I did get a "Homerun Hanky" so it must have been 1991 or 1992, can't remember for sure.

15

Baltimore, New York (A), Toronto, Chicago (N), Cincinnati, Milwaukee, St. Louis, Pittsburgh, New York (N), Los Angeles (N) of the current parks. Chicago (A), Pittsburgh (Three Rivers), MIlwaukee, St. Louis (Busch), Minnesota of the "are no more" variety.
My favorite besides Wrigley is PNC in Pittsburgh.
I've had the pleasure of having Dodger Dogs thrown at me by the LA fans ( but not after the 7th inning because they'd all left....), pretzels bought for me by the Pittsburgh fans, been ridiculed by the Sox fans (good naturedly), featured on the big screen at Shea with my Mets fans friends, talked baseball with some very astute Yankee fans, went to the Reds game last September with 30,000 Cubs fans (besides the Hooten no-hitter my absolute favorite ballpark memory), observed hotel residents parade around their rooms in various stages of dress in Toronto,
saw the statue of Babe Ruth with his right handed glove at Camden Yards and ate at Boogs......and marveled repeatedly at the arrogance of the Cardinal fans at both the new and the old Busch.......and that's just for starters. The plain fact is there are just too many great memories for one post.

Kingdome, Wrigley and the HHH Metrodome.

For geographic reasons, I didn't get to Wrigley until I was 23 years old - but before that I always said I could die a happy man after being in Wrigley. I actually felt that way, like it was the crowning moment of my life. I've since been back to Wrigley three times and it's always the highlight of my year. You guys that get to go every day have it pretty good, don't take it for granted.

I also saw Cito Gaston get tossed in the Kingdome for arguing a HR call back in '92, the year the Blue Jays won the World Series. Got to meet Joe Carter, that was fun.

I've been to many Twins games in the dome and it's an awful place for baseball. Baseball is just meant to be outside, but the seats there point to the outfield, and you have to crane your neck to see the action.

Wow, that's a long poll!

I have a pretty long list -- here it is.

Current parks (23):
Wrigley
Miller
GABP
PNC
Minute Maid
Shea
Dolphin
Turner Field
Dodger
AT&T
Chase
Coors
The Cell
Metrodome
Comerica
The Jake (Progressive Field)
Kauffman
Yankee
Fenway
Skydome
Camden Yards
Oakland
Anaheim *** (as Big A in 1975, have not been to new version)

Parks no longer in use (10):
Old Comiskey
Tiger Stadium
Metropolitan (Minnesota)
Milwaukee County
Old Busch (StL)
Jarry Park (Montreal)
Riverfront (Cincy)
Three Rivers (Pittsburgh)
Qualcomm
Candlestick

Special (2):
Hiram Bithorn Stadium, San Juan (Cubs vs. Expos, 2003)
Tokyo Dome (Cubs vs. Mets, 2000)

So that's 35; outside of Wrigley, my favorites are Phone Co. Park in San Francisco and PNC. I also like Camden Yards, and Fenway is... well, it's special even though it's old.

I've been...

1. Caught a Twins/Mariners game in Minnesota when I was in high school, and saw Cubs/Marlins in Wrigley three years ago.

2a. I remember that Mike Blowers hit a grand slam for the Mariners to give them the win. Also, one of my friends and I made a sign...it was a ship sinking into the sea, with a little word balloon that said "Help!", and the caption: Sink the Mariners.

2b. Ah, the epic pitching duel of Dontrelle Willis vs. Jon Koronka. As you can imagine, it did not go well. Also, late in the game when the bleachers started to clear out--it was, like, 9-1 after all--some idiot in the row behind me decided it'd be a good idea for his girlfriend to sit in his lap, and dig her knees into my back. Jeez beasties, people. You can't move over two feet?

Still, apart from the horrible beating at the hands of the hated Marlins, it was a pretty good time. Unfortunately, we didn't have time to get the proper experience...we didn't get there until about an hour before game time, and we had to drive straight back to Des Moines after the game was over, because my buddy had to work in the morning. Next time I go, I'm taking the weekend.

3. Tied for best and worst, since I've only been to the one, is the Metrodome. It's a hole.

I've also seen minor league games in four different towns--Omaha, Des Moines, St. Paul, and two games in Sioux Falls. (At the first one, Oil Can Boyd was pitching for the Sioux City Explorers!)

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

by Cool Hand on Apr 10, 2008 5:23 PM CDT   0 recs

Oh yeah.

I've also been to Fenway, but that was just for the tour. I was actually there on the travel day between games 2 and 3 of the series last year.

Before each game, please remember to feed the bats.

Wrigley, Jack Murphey, the Cell, Old Comiskey, Old Busch, New Busch, Miller Park, Kauffman, and the Astrodome.

Too many memories. I caught a foul ball off the bat of Frank White at Kauffman as a kid, so that sticks out.

Not a favorite, but some things I liked better:

Kauffman: better sight lines in the box seats

Jack Murphey: Better beer selection, more bikinis

The Cell: the polish w/grilled onions.

Miller Park: the brats.

Things I hated:

Old Comiskey: that place had more columns than Rome.

Kauffman: lonely, so lonely. no one's there.

Miller Park: one road out of stadium. Arrrrrggggghhhh.

Old Busch/New Busch: Cardinals fans.

Ballparks

I've been to games at two parks--Wrigley Field and Miller Park. Several years ago, my sister & I walked by the outside of Oriole Park at Camden Yards because we were attending an event in Baltimore and the train stop nearest to the event was next to the ballpark.

I would like to go to Nationals Park someday; it looks interesting. I need to plan a trip to DC in the next couple of years.

Eight Ballbarks

1) Wrigley, Jacobs (Progressive) Field, Great American Ballpark, Comerica, Fenway, Shea, Cleveland Stadium, Riverfront/Cinergy Field
2) First game at Cleveland Stadium in '93 (I believe) getting to watch Randy Johnson mow down the putrid Tribe. Also getting 7 batting practice balls at Old Tiger Stadium, because there wasn't a soul there.
3) By far the worst was Shea. Smelled like trash, loud (both planes and obnoxious/uneducated fans both times I was there)

Great thread and neat stories

1. I've been to 4. Camden, Coors, Turner, and Wrigley.
2. Camden was my first game, so I remember the excitement of finally seeing live MLB after being a baseball fan for so long. Of course you had Ripken during his streak, and I remember two absolute bombs hit by Mo Vaughn for the Sox that night.

Coors was in '98, and it was during the last weekend of the season. The Giants were visiting the Rox, and the Mets and Cubs were both in action during the the game. Since the Cubs, Mets, and SF went into that weekend tied for the Wild Card, I was the biggest Rockies fan in the place. And I did a lot of scoreboard watching.

At Turner, it was the Cubs vs. the Braves, so it was a huge thrill to see the Cubs live for the first time. Tapani started and got shelled (Chipper hit 2 bombs that game). Gary Matthews, Jr. supplied most of the Cub offense in what I think was an 11-4 loss.

Finally, my first Wrigley visit was to see the Cubs and Brewers. I couldn't get two tickets together during the entire trip, but a friend and I went one afternoon just to take a shot at it (I had all ready reserved one for the day after, and she decided she wanted to try to go to one). We ended up getting two seats together about 16 rows right behind home plate because they had been player tickets for one of the Brewers, and he only needed half of his allotment. I remember being struck by how green the grass was and how awe-inspiring it was to see everything in person. The weather was perfect, Wood came off the DL that day and K'ed 9, and the Cubs won in the bottom of the ninth on...wait for it...hits by Todd Hollandsworth and Jeromy Burnitz.

3. Favorite non-Wrigley Stadium is Camden. They really did a great job in making a modern park that feels like a classic, timeless one. My least favorite is Turner Field. I felt like I was a million miles away from the action. I got ripped into by Braves fans because of my Cubs jersey and cap---I mean, I expected a little harrassing, but wow. And I still have to marvel at a franchise that can win that many division championships but not even come close to filling their stadium.

i have seen games at wrigley, new busch and kauffman in kc. i have had tours of wrigley, new busch and pacbell. i liked them all but pacbell was the best outside of wrigley. i will be adding miller park to this list in july.

My answers to great questions

1. How many major league stadiums, past and present, have you attended a game in?
2. What do you remember about those games?
3. What's your favorite non-Cubs stadium, and what's your least favorite?

1- I've been to 8 stadiums including, Wrigley Field, Brewer's County Stadium, Miller Park, HHH Metrodome, PNC Park, Citizens Bank Park, Safeco Field, and the Ballpark in Arlington (Texas)

2- I remember Mitch Williams in the Cubs bullpen when I was younger... Brewers games all I remember is "Roll out the Barrel"... The Metrodome has some read bad sitelines but I saw Kirby Puckett play a couple times there... PNC is a nice park with no energy... Citizens: worst fans in baseball, during the the starting lineups, they booed 67% of their OWN starting lineup, Safeco is a great park to catch a game and food is TOP NOTCH (although baseball seems secondary there)... and see entry #3 for BinA

3- The Ballpark in Arlington is my favorite non-Cubs stadium. It's gotten worse over the years since Bush no longer owns the team... but some of the great features are the homerun porch in right, the museum that rotates hall of fame exhibits through, the former clubhouse which used to be filled with every movie poster known to man, the indoor-underground player's parking garage where pitchers used to play roller hockey on their non-throwing days and where Pudge used to park one of his red or black Dodge Vipers. And just an overall feeling you get when the game is being played. It's a nice pleasant peaceful experience and it's a lot of fun if they get a good crowd (which they struggle to do now). I think they put the whole package together. The fans are friendly too.

by bap on Apr 10, 2008 5:53 PM CDT   0 recs

oh yeah... oops

I forgot to add US Cellular Field... but I'll do so here and also add that as my least favorite field. I'm not a Sox fan so I just can't stand the PA announcer and just the overall commercial feel of the games there.

by bap on Apr 10, 2008 5:58 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

ooops again

I forgot to add the House that Ruth built. I saw the Cubs play there and I witnessed Derek Jeter's first grand slam home run of his entire career (which took him forever). Of course it had to be against my Cubs... I hated being there amongst those animals they call fans in the Bronx.

I was there for that series, too.

Yeah, they weren't bad...

although I didn't know you had to tip your usher for taking you to your seats in the upper deck...

Also... there is a reason that the bleachers there is a non-alcoholic section and that may have tamed the fans out there.

by bap on Apr 10, 2008 10:22 PM CDT to parent up   0 recs

You don't HAVE to tip your usher.

At least, I didn't when I sat there two years ago.

I like the Yankee Stadium bleachers. The price is right ($12) and the fans there are knowledgeable. When I sat there last year wearing my Cub jacket, we had an interesting discussion on the merits of Kyle Farnsworth...

Ballparks

1. 17 total.
Current: Wrigley, Coors, Chase, The Cell, Metrodome, The Jake, Oakland, Kaufman, Anaheim, Tropicana, Rogers Centre, AT & T

No longer: Comiskey, Busch (old), Riverfront, Three Rivers, RFK

2. Mostly what I remeber is going with my Dad. We would take a family vacation nearly every summer, and if the "home" team had a game while we were there, my Dad and I would break away for a few hours and watch a game.

Other than that I remember the players we've seen. The list is too long to name, but some of the greats of this era.

3. Toss-up between AT &T, love the water and the sight lines were great all around the park, and Old Comiskey, just because it was the first place I ever saw a game.

my first game ever was back in 05

it was in May against the Nationals at RFK. The Cubs had a 4-2 lead with Maddux on the mound but Cliff Bartosh (that's a name you don't hear everyday!) lost the game. Wasn't a great game, sloppy with errors, and only one home run by Nick Johnson.

The next year I went to another game at RFK in July vs the Cubs. Mark Prior (I think that is his name, correct?) "pitched." He was absolutely dreadful, yet the Cubs managed to take a lead with Ramirez's two home runs. However, the Cubs ultimately lost. It sucked too because I wanted an autograph from D-Lee, and I talked to him and I rolled the ball on the dugout but it rolled the wrong way (talk about bad luck, huh?). Lol I remember him always saying, "man that was weak!" great memory though, but i did get Sean Marshall's autograph.

Last season, I went to Wrigley for the first time. It was the game after the D-Lee-Young fight. The Cubs were completely blown out of the water by the Padres. Hill and Gallagher could not pitch well at all. But it was just great seeing the park. Once you go one time, you have to go again, and I intend on going again not this summer, but in the near future. I also went to RFK that season and Zambrano pitched. Only time I ever have seen the Cubs win and I was on TV too in the ninth inning!

This season I plan on going to the new Nationals Park on April 26th. I also plan on going to Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium in July.

Finally!

I've been to RFK...

... but not for a Nats game. I was at the SABR convention in Washington in 1987. One of the events was an old-timer's game at RFK. They still had some of the NFL configuration up, so it had a real short LF wall.

Luke Appling cleared it with a HR. Granted, it was only about 250 feet, but he was 75 years old at the time!

it was pretty crappy the past three years

It was a great park for a team to get used to town, but ten more years in that stadium would be awful. It's nice to have a NL park in DC now because the closest NL stadium to where I live is either Shea Stadium in NY or Turner Field in ATL, which are about a good eighth hours away.

Finally!

I was at that game, Al!

But I just looked it up, and it was in 1982, not 1987. I took a bunch of pictures at that game and I don't know what ever happened to them!

Good fanpost

1. I've been to:
Wrigley (too many times to remember)
Old Busch Stadium
Old Comiskey
New Comiskey
The Great American Ballpark

My brother and I frequently talk about trying to go on stadium tours to increase this paltry number.

2. Oh, the memories...the first game I can recall going to was a double-header and my dad (somehow) got Gene Siskel's seats right by home plate. It was pretty cool. Later, an old lady from the church I grew up in got the job being usher for the ten rows right behind home plate. She let my brother and I sit in row 3 for a game where the Giants blew out the Cubs. I do remember seeing a Sammy Sosa homerun. Man those long balls look like they travel far from that vantage point.

3. My favorite non-Wrigley ballpark is the Great American Ballpark in Cincinnati. You can always get great seats, the Ohio River is kind of fun to look at (you can see boats go by), the food is good, and it's likely that the Reds will lose. Who can ask for more?

Is it tacky ro reply to your own post?

My father-in-law is an architecht (sp?) and one of the projects he worked on was the Metrodome in the Twin Cities. People tell me it's a horrible place to watch a game and I understand it's scheduled to be torn down soon, but I really do want to try to make a game before it goes the way of Tiger Stadium, Old Comsikey, Riverfront Stadium...etc...etc...etc.

no, it's not tacky... see mine above

and that's pretty cool that your relative worked on the project.... it was way before its time... that's for sure.

8 for me

1. Wrigley, Milwaukee County Stadium, Miller Park, Memorial Stadium (Baltimore), Camden Yards, Veterans Stadium (PHI), Three River Stadium, RFK. My first game was at Memorial Stadium (grew up in DC area)

2. The Cubs have never won on any of my visits to Wrigley. I mentioned this to my cousin when we went to a game last year and he quipped that it wouldn't be the 'true wrigley experience' if they won (he's a Yankees fan).

3. Favorite non-wrigley is probably Camden Yards. That said, the hot dogs at RFK are the best ballpark dogs that I've ever had. I'm not sure if they kept the same vendor when they moved into the new stadium - I'll have to check when/if I visit family this summer.

I stayed in the hotel in 2003.

That is VERY cool.

Agreed

I literally jumped up and down when I saw the view of the field from my hotel room - watching the Tigers take batting practice from there was a blast.

cool diary

Ive just been too wrigley, new and old comiskey, sky dome, and im going to fenway and nationals park this year.

My greatest baseball game i went to was in 2003 and Clement was on the mound and it was late in the year i believe it was against the expos. But he recorded his 200th strikeout of the year and and a few pitches later we ended up catching a fould ball (which was the ball that recorded the 200th k) we had ushers come up to us asking saying he wanted the ball. All in all we got a ball signed by the whole 2003. except Sosa wouldnt sign it. jerk

skydome was awesome when i went when i was young.

3 for me

The Big A when it was both home to the Rams, and after Disney took it over. Dodger stadium and Wrigley.

My greatest game, being at Anaheim stadium when Reggie Jackson hit his 500th home run. I still get chills talking about it.

I would say the Big A is my other favorite. I grew up in Anaheim going to games there, and it sure is easier to get to than Dodger stadium.

i didnt answer all the questions...

memories...well I remember almost getting killed at the Vet. We were all lined up against the front row rail at the vet trying to get a Daryll STrawberry autograph. i was about 13 or 14 I think. The damn rail broke from all the people pushing and everyone toppled over. I was crushed and couldnt breath freaking out. what a mess. But I got the sig....which is worthless now. Wolrd Series game in Fulton County was cool. I was King of my own Hill in high school getting to go to that.

I like Great AMerican Ballpark. It's almost like the field is below ground and the stadium is sooo vertical. And I always laughat all the trash floating down the river. (Was that old meat floating down the river? Whats that? A mattress?)

I HATE Miller Park. But yet I go to many games there. It's cheap as hell but the traffic coming from McHenry Il through Lake genieva is a disater. Last
